Awesome work to the medallists, thanks again Andy for organising.
I'm stoked at having a much better result than last year, look forward to the score sheets and hopefully some constructive feedback from the judges
As Andy said, so long as you enjoy your coffee the scores don't really matter. However it's nice to have some some critical tasting done none the less.

Wow - blown away to see my name up there a few times in the results! So stoked to be a place-getter, let-a-lone take out a Gold position in one class - thanks Andy for creating the opportunity to take part in this competition ! And for all your work you’ve put in whilst down there.
Thanks and congrats to all the other participants and place-getters - well done!!
And thanks to the judges also!!
Im very proud of what me and my little Behmor have achieved.
Have absolutely loved learning how to roast, this past 12 months or so - not sure any other hobby has brought me this much enjoyment !
    Cheers guys
    Rod

    Congrats to Tilly. Great work!!

Watched the feed on Instagram. Congrats to Andy as well. Grabbed more than one medal from what I heard (video cut in and out...)

From what I could hear there were a few other CS members that won medals in the commercial stuff too. Great work by all.

I’m going to make the trip up next year for sure!

Congratulations to all the medal winners and great work to all the roasters, it takes some courage to put forward your efforts when you aren’t commercially tied to the coffee! Thanks to Andy for giving us all the opportunity to explore our roasting boundaries (and push them). I had a great time with this comp, it was my first year entering and I will definitely be back to have fun with it all again next year if possible.

@Andy: great getup at the ceremonies tonight btw

Well the batch roast for espresso I had 60g left. Pulled the shots this morning

Managed to get the grinder in on the third shot. Worked out better than I expected.

Doing the latte and filter shots tomorrow.

Golden Bean - Home Roaster Competition 2018.

Firstly, well done to everyone that had a crack this year.

It's a great competition and a chance for everyone to learn some new roasting techniques while pushing yourself to be more critical of what you are producing for different drinks. Many of the judges that I spoke to really loved this competition and they found it was interesting to taste so many different takes on the same secret coffee bean.

I've seen the score sheets, as usual the feedback varies from lousy to very constructive. It's the luck of the draw sadly but as a rule, the score is reasonably accurate for what that judge found in the cup. Low scores and high scores are generally checked by the area judges as are any scores that differ too much between two judges. There are quite a few scribbles and score adjustments on the sheets too, often these are as the cup cools and the judge decides they were too generous or too light and they change it to suit. It's never a perfect system but this is easily one of the best competitions where the look of the beans isn't judged, just the sweetness, acidity, body and taste.

Anyway, the bit you are all waiting for...

    Milk Based Coffee:
    GOLD - David "DaveD"
    SILVER - Gary "sidewayss"
    BRONZE - Rod "rroodd"

    Filter Coffee:
    GOLD - Rod "rroodd"
    SILVER - Tilly "Tilledwards"
    BRONZE - Andy "justacuppa"

    Espresso Coffee:
    GOLD - Tilly "Tilledwards"
    SILVER - Lewis "gwedboi"
    BRONZE - Chris "dungee"
    BRONZE - Richard "trickydicky2"

    Overall:
    GOLD - Tilly "Tilledwards"
    SILVER - Rod "rroodd"
    BRONZE - Andy "justacuppa"

This is Tilly's 3rd time entering the competition and her coffee has improved every year. Commercial roasters better watch out, she'll be coming for you one day I expect!

The PDF table of scores is attached, the code is the last 4 digits of your entry invoice number.

If you didn't score as well as you hoped but enjoy your own coffee then it doesn't really matter what it scored. Sometimes your tastes and the judges just don't align. Don't take it to heart.

I fly home late Sunday night and we'll try hard to post all the score sheets out to everyone Monday when I get back to work.

That last pic flashed me back to what the beds looked like after we returned to the room(s) after a day at SCAA and we unloaded.

    Yes, that's correct.

    21g ground
    42g yield
    27-30 seconds extraction
(else its a sink shot and they do it again)

Not mentioned there but they also used the Puqpress which was set at 15kg so the tamp was also consistent across the 6 baristas.

The shots are amazingly consistent and everyone loved the Opera which didn't miss a beat in barrage of thousands of shots over 3 days

Exciting times ahead! Just curious, how is the espresso/milk based portion done? A barista on a machine working with a predetermined brew recipe for each batch? Just wondering how they do it, I'd imagine this part might be trickier than filter in getting the espresso right! (Getting the dose/grind/time in perfect harmony for each roast batch..)

This was the first one through, great colour and looked like a good roast.
    Is it yours?

With some excellent helpers , all the judges got their coffees fresh off the Brazen and to their table quickly (with a smile!).
