  • Coffee may slow memory declines in women

    Hi all,
Well here is my first "new topic"
I read this on Sydney Morning Herald website today, thought CSers should be immediately informed.

"Drinking more than three cups of coffee a day helped protect older women against some age-related memory decline, French researchers said, giving women more reason to love the worlds most popular stimulant.

Men did not enjoy the same benefit, they said.

"The more coffee one drank, the better the effects seemed to be on (womens) memory functioning in particular," said Karen Ritchie at the French National Institute of Medical Research, whose work appears in the journal, Neurology.
The researchers followed more than 7,000 men and women in three French cities, checking their health and mental function and asking them about their current and past eating and drinking habits, their friends, and their daily activities.

They used this information to sort out the specific role caffeine played in these womens lives.
They found women who drank more than three cups of coffee per day, or its caffeine equivalent in tea, retained more of their verbal and - to a lesser extent - visual memories over four years.  The odds of these women having verbal memory declines was 33 per cent less, and visual and spatial memory declines 18 per cent less, than women who drank one cup or fewer per day.

The effect also depended on age, with women over 80 reaping more benefits from these beverages than those who were 10 to 15 years younger, Ritchies team wrote. It was unclear whether current or former coffee consumption made the difference.

Some studies in mice have suggested that caffeine might block the build up of proteins that lead to mental decline.  Ritchie is not sure why only women benefited in her study.  "Our best guess is that women dont metabolise coffee in the same way (as men)," she said in a telephone interview.

Ritchie plans to follow the women longer to see if caffeine delays the onset of dementia - the mental confusion that signals Alzheimers disease and other brain disorders. She said people should weigh any brain gains derived from caffeine against other effects of the stimulant, including raised blood pressure.

The average American drinks one to two cups of (really bad ;D) coffee a day, according to the National Coffee Association."

Hormone Replacement Therapy b4b? If it involves jabbing my thigh with a foot long syringe, then I might just stick to the 3 coffees thanks mate.

Have you tried HRT for ya-self, & if so did you have qualms with the sudden man-boobs & quiver in your voice pitch?

                  mmm ...

Re: Coffee may slow memory declines in women

well if having lots of coffee in guys doesnt help with early dementia then Im screwed. Better tattoo my name on my hand so I remember who I am.
She who has great ideas on the other hand forgets more then me, or is it she just forgets about the things I do... Like bringing more machines home to play with.. Either way its a win win for me

Men do not need good memory. When we forget where the car keys/socks/spanner/widgit is, we ask a woman.

Precisely, Lizzi, precisely. Women have greater memory, they file things into memory much more ably then men, and of course, unlike men they can multi-task.

(Mmm. Computers do all that. I wonder.....)

In my case, multi-tasking means making the coffee while burning the toast.
