OAK BROOK, IL – McDonalds Corporation (NYSE: MCD) announced today that a deal has been forged to forward purchase the entire 2008-2012 Yemen Arabica coffee crop to build the McCafé™ arm of their international business. Since the first McCafé™ opened in 1993 in Melbourne, Australia, the brand has maintained a distinct focus on making value-priced, specialty coffee accessible to people in 17 countries.

With over 27,871 restaurants worldwide, in 119 different countries the future demand for a unique coffee that could standout in the fierce specialty coffee market place has caused the McCafé™ brand to find a truly unique coffee and purchase the entire crop for the next 4 year period. McDonald’s Chief Executive Officer Jim Skinner said “this is a very exciting time for our international franchisees and affiliates”.

The new McCafé™ blends are expected to be released into the market under the banner of McSpresso™ late second quarter 2008. Jennifer Nau the media liaison for Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) was not available for comment at the time this went to press.

Dry up my Yemen supplies?? Ye Gods.  


I do know, that Nestle have been dumped and Moccopan have been re-instated to supply the "New Blend", hence all of the Cafina grinders have been adjusted accordingly.
It will be interesting to see how dark/light they roast it. Although by the time we get it it will be nearly 4-6 months old and lost that incredible flavour.

small edit note: Richy4000, I actually happen to be a "McBarista", and I was trained by a professional Barista with the certificates to go along with it. Some of us actually know what we are doing... 8-)

Im sorry Maccaschick, Im sure there are exceptions like yourself to the standard "button pushers" you find in Starbucks etcetera. Im pretty sure their baristas are trained too, but ninetysomthing percent of them are still "button pushers" and not baristas...unfortunately.

But youll be able to make that Yemen sing wont you!! Luck you hey!!

Cant they just buy the cheapest arabica they can possibly find and advertise "we have the FRESHEST, HIGHEST QUALITY, 100% ARABICA BEANS" like all the other big coffee chains probably do.

How can a company just buy out a whole bean varietal - "we own the yemen bean now"!!!! Thats crazy. Yemens such a unique bean too, and too bloody expensive for maccas. They cant get an advertising spin by buying expensive yemen the same way say starbucks might be able to advertise the clover. It wont make their coffee taste any better with their mc-baristas in charge.

I think Andy has enough pull in the coffee industry to knock this McSpresso deal on the head. Ive heard that Andys been on the phone to Kevin Rudd while he is on his US tour to lobby for a reversal, and that Kevin has been very supportive.

Slightly confused :-/
"The entire yeman arabica crop", are we talking all yemen coffee from all regions (Mattari ,
Hirazi/Harasi , Haimi, Saihi, Ismaili, Sharasi, Dhamari, Rimy), or just from one region, or just from one farm within one region?
