Ive supplied beans for a roast off for CSers in the past. Depending on how much coffee is required, Id be happy to supply green beans of the same type for a roast off. The only issue would be how far I am from the city - Im not too central >.> - otherwise the actual tasting could be done at a cafe or somewhere closer to Perth which was more convenient for most members, and I could supply the equipment for that as well.

Only problem with that is the huge advantage they have from an intimate knowledge of how these beans respond to different roast profiles etc.

Thats the whole point :P Can you produce a roast thats just as good? Even something so simple as a heat gun with the right techniques should be able to get into the ballpark of a commercial roast, you just have to work with the equipment you have. Commercial roasting means that you have such large quantities over time that individual profiles can be refined to perfection (havent got there yet though... ) but 90% towards a given profile is something I work out in a space of weeks.

My shoulders picking up, did several roasts over the last week and managing a one-handed tamp for Silvia so my coffee mojo is back on track.
Maybe Fiori or Five Senses would be interested in supporting this concept?

Apologies for my silence on this - Ive spent the last few weeks trying to get acquainted with a new corretto set up (twin paddle BM and a double Bosch Heat Gun) - but Ive come to learn that  greater quality doesnt always accompany greater quantity (a long story)  :

Pretty much as Viviane has said.....

Obviously a Commercial Roaster who is a member of our community is preferred, but failing that I guess you guys and gals should be able to organise something with a local roaster whose credentials you respect? Its up to you really, so long as everyone plays by the same rules, uses the same bean, and uses a panel of cuppers who have some idea of what theyre tasting, preferably via a double-blind system. As JB mentioned, some of the other states are already well on the way so you could use the methodology established there as guidelines for how you do things.

You could always encourage the roaster you decide on to become a CS Site Sponsor... they would then have the right to proudly display that they are the First accredited Site Sponsor in W.A.. That would surely have to be good for business?

Ill reserve judgement on the uncompetitive nature of this event... but I was hoping (in the 1:1) to have the same bean roasted by a commercial and a home roaster..... I agree that any old commercial roast doesnt make sense....

Re non site sponsor..... that doesnt sit well with me (and I can understand why it wouldnt sit well with CS admin)..

The sponsors of the event will get lots of publicity on here and within the local community of roasters..... If they are site sponsors that is fair.... but if not they are getting free promotion for supplying some beans (at maybe a reduced price) and a venue.....

This may well impact on those roasters who are site sponsors..... and although it is unfortunate for those of us here in the west.... I think it is far fairer to those who pay the bills for this site (and provide advice, support and great service)......

Sometimes being in WA just doesnt pay..... but we have other things to make up for it

Edit: and if people were really interested they could do what our Tassie roasters have done (they also dont have a site sponsor roaster) - they have joined the NSW/ACT...... we could have joined with SA..... not as good as being there in person but you could still participate.

Forgive me for butting in from the other side of the country, but I dont think its seen as being home roaster against home roaster. I think the idea is to get various kinds of home roasts all using the same bean and seeing how many, if any, of them compete with what a commercial roaster produces. I always thought that Davids idea of pitting home roasted coffee against "any brand you name" i.e. crap commercial roasts was an insult to home roasting.

I also dont know that you need to find a CS sponsor - I guess its easier for the eastern side to get something organised because we had sponsors who were willing to step in. It would be a shame if you couldnt organise something there with a non sponsor - you guys got the regular CS get togethers happening long before we did, it would be a pity if you missed out on this one.

There is none!

Do we have a date it neds to occur by?

Most states already have their beans and are well underway

Do we have a bean supplier?

Nope..... it seems it needs to be a site sponsor/roaster..... and dont have any!

A roast-off venue?

At said site sponsor/roaster errr.... there is none!

Does it need to be a site sponsor or can I line up a local roaster independantly?

So far they have all been site sponsors..... not sure if a non sponsor would be acceptable!

This all came from a discussion on whether a home roast could approach the quality of a commercial roast - a challenge put out by David S...

Thundergod and I accepted the challenge..... just a one to one with a commercial roaster...... but that got lost somehow and this has grown huge.... which is great for those over East..... but Perth has been forgotten - as it so often is (even if Perth Baristas come 1st in cupping and third in the Barista champs....)

As I said at the time.... Im not interested in competing against other CS members (there is already too much mine is bigger, shinier, more expensive yada yada... in the CS community) but would have been interested in a 1 on 1 with a commercial roaster.

Anyhow, greenman is the only one who has expressed interest over here.... assuming he is over his operation.
