    Re: SCAA 2008 Roaster Pics

I had some Caribou Coffee when I was living in New Brunswick, Canada back in 06.... I was impressed - even with my limited palate back then.

I didnt get a ballot so no, I didnt vote.

Caribou Coffee, while headquartered here, is a national chain. The third largest behind StarChar and Dunn Brothers.

They are known for bringing in some very nice beans. I ran into one of their roasters and had several long conversations with him as we stood in the persona non grata area (ie the outside smoking area). As I recall he said they were currently roasting the Finca Vista Hermosa as their SO.

    SCAA 2008
    MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)

--Local gourmet coffeehouse operator Caribou Coffee won the Roasters Guild 2008 Roasters Choice Tasting Competition yesterday at the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s (SCAA) 20th Annual Conference & Exhibition in Minneapolis, Minn. Celebrating the art of roasting specialty coffee, the competition featured exceptional coffees from some of the finest coffee roasters throughout the country. SCAA is the world’s largest coffee trade association.

2008 Roasters Choice Tasting Competition results:

    1. Caribou Coffee, Minneapolis, Minnesota – Gold Award winner

    2. Sweet Maria’s, Oakland, California – Silver Award winner

    3. The Roasterie, Kansas City, Missouri – Bronze Award winner

All Roasters Guild members – about 370 – were invited to participate in the competition by submitting 30 pounds of coffee, which they roasted just prior to the event, ensuring freshness. To determine a winner, each conference attendee in Minneapolis got one chance to vote for the best of the 10 finalists. The tasting was blind. The chief aim of the event was to recognize the craft of roasting while conference delegates tasted some superb coffees. The theme of this year’s Roasters Choice Tasting Competition is “Single Origin Coffees.”

    So did you vote Javaphile?
Do you know the local winner?

I would be interested to hear how they ran the competition as I would dearly love to get something similar off the ground for AASCA here.

I did debate a midnight raid but somehow I just didnt think I could fit it all into my car! ;D

Geee - ya just gotta bung some casters on the bottom of the roaster and redirect the worm drive down a CV joint and bingo! mobile roaster to drive away.
I was thinking more along the lines of bringing a big chopper in and just lifting the domes off and flying away with it all! : ;D

Unfortunately the FAA had a slight issue with my flight plan. ;D

Im fairly sure he would have wanted to make an offer on the whole exhibition building (inc contents), change the locks and shoo everyone out of his play area.

    Andy,

Do you really think Java(Toys! I *must* have new toys!)phile could have left without a few purchases?
Im poor! I didnt buy a thing! Well OK, I did buy a few things, an outrageously priced parking spot and food on all 5 days. Does that count? :-?

I did run into a local though who liked a grinder he saw at one booth so much he went to another that sold them retail and dropped several thousand dollars on it on the spot! To use with his Aeropress!
