  • Blend suggestion for black-coffee (not espresso)

Im roasting some coffee for my Mum on the weekend who drinks it as regular black coffee, no sugar, made using plunger, and now AeroPress that I got her for Mothers day.

I want to tailor a blend thats designed to be best drunk as plain black coffee.
ie: it doesnt have to "cut through" the milk but can instead take full advantage of those beans whose delicate flavours get lost with addition of moo-juice.

These are the green beans I have available:

    Brazil Cerrado Bold
    Guatemala Huehuetenango Blue
    Ethiopia Limu
    Ugandan Bugisu AA
    Colombian Caracolito Peaberry
El Salvador Organic Shade Santa Adelaida
    India Mysore Nuggets A grade
Costa Rican SHB Tarrazu 2006 crop
    Dominican Republic Barahona AAA
    Sumatran Mandheling Grade 1
    PNG Sihereni AX
    PNG Kimmel
    Indian Monsoon Robusta
    Peru Kontiki Chamana
    Kenya AA Grade
    Indo Bukit Marrante Kalosi Toraja

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.... %s and roast styles

    Thanks...

Have you tried the Colombian and Tarrazu as SOs? Ive found them both to make a very nice full flavored cup.

Ive found most Colombians work best pulled before 2nd crack is reached. I usually pull mine when the beans have all smoothed out.

The Tarrazu on the other hand Ive found can take a dark roast quite nicely and I frequently roast it into the rolling 2nd crack.

Sheesh, you still got beans from the last 6 months of polls? Youre lucky.

Depends what you want really. The Aeropress is not too bad a brewing method. Very similar to true cupping.

Well give this one a shot anyway.

Dominican 45% (City+ - Full City) Not your typical base bean but very well balanced.
PNG Sihereni 15% (City - City+) Gotta love a bit of fruit salad...
Toraja 15% (City+ - Full City) Earthy goodness and complexity.
Limmu 15% (City - City+) Most mums love a bit of chocolate.
Mysore 10% (City) Bit of tang to finish it off.

Thanks for the replies. I really like the AeroPress too.
I reckon for a quick and easy SO tasting session its second only to the Clover for simplicity.

Will try the "nunu" blend and will give it credit on the label too

Havent tried the Columbian and Tarazzu as SO (apart from my feeble attempt at cupping when I first got them)
but I love the sweetness of those little round Columbians an from memory the Tarazzu was a beautiful bean to look at then it was roasted, nice and smooth, rich brown colour.

I signed up for the CS Learn to Blend Session in July so I hope to build my own base of blend-knowledge soon.

I still have beans left yes... Im new to this and wanted to try and build a bit if a "cellar" of green beans for the specific purpose of having blending options down the track. I even have an anally-retentive spreadsheet that I use to keep track of it all down to the last gram (in theory) ;D Its got a pie chart and everything...

          Hi Lochness,

I just had a fantastic cup (black) through the Aeropress: lots of sweet and creamy flavours dancing around . . . . . .

          Twas:

          2 parts Barahona
          2 parts Monsooned Malabar
2 Parts Jamaican Blue Mountain (Thanks Chris for this!)
          1 part Kenya AA
          1 part Colombia Supremo

I added a dash of warm milk about half way through, and still a fine cup. I see you have most ingredients or alternatives.

Let me know if it works for you.

          Cheers,

          Rob

              Chris,

It was quite deliberate. I wanted to wait until I felt I knew what I was doing re roasting before tackling such a legendary bean! When you gave them to me I was only just starting out. Plus its only been in recent weeks that Ive turned on to black coffee and Ive only just got a suitable brewing device (Aeropress). So the time was eventually right and Ive been enjoying it mostly straight brewed.

              Cheers,

              Rob
