10 x 100gm lots, as I said, made it earn its cost heheheh
I have to be sure that it does not suffer the same fate as the sunbeam I killed, but at least Ive got some coffee resting !
Ive found that I if I put the popper on top of the Sullos 20sec milk crate cooler whilst Im weighing out next batch its cool enough to continue without pausing too long.
Took me about hour and a half including me wandering off and getting sidetracked doing other things, had the timing down pat from clock and colour smells etc.
Hell Im having my own personal brown bay!
I roast a lot of blended beans.
I generally pre blend about 1 week in advance of the roast and find that on the whole it works well. The only reason to rest the blended beans is as earlier in the thread to equalise the moisture content, which just aides the final color consistancy.
Both pre and post roasting has advantages and disadvatages.
But as said before in the thread the criteria is "similar" roasting characteristics,
However having said that Im not adverse to roasting a batch which has a range of roast colors in it.....as long as the tasting profile is OK it creates some asthetic visual appeal to it.
I wouldnt suggest storing the green blend in a sealed plastic bag as this may just inadvertantly add an unwanted defect such as mustiness or mouldiness which wastnt present in the SO. I find the cloth bags that the CS beans come in just great for that.
I enclose a couple of photos of some roasts which even though complex exhibit both of the color profiles discussed.......consistant and varied.
Blend 27 (I just give my roasts numbers untill I strike the holy grail blend) is a blend of 5 bean types pre blended and roasted as 2 parts. Part A contains Sumantram, Brazil and Indian while Part B contains Guatemalian and Ugandian. Part A is dumped prior to any 2nd Crack activity while Part B is into 2nd crack BUT NOT ROLLING.
If you draw a line down the centre of the picture Part A is on the Left anfd Part B on the right.....hard to pick the 2 blends and roast simply by color.
Blend 50 on the other hand is a single pre Blend of 4 Beans - 2 Indian, Indonesian and a Brazil. Included a photo of Blend 50 in its green pre blend state which shows a fairly mottled color to start with.
I didnt want the Moonsooned Malabar to go to dark anyway and it ended up a mottled color.
