    Hey all

    I'm looking for some recommendations for a 50/50 blend to make Espresso primarily, based on what's available in BeanBay. Going well with milk would be a secondary bonus.

    Sticking with 50/50 as I don't want to buy more than 2 varieties at a time, given they only come in bulk packs

    Also, beans that I can pre-blend and then roast, ie beans that don't vary too much in roast profiles.

    Looking forward to your suggestions

    I am far from king of blends, but i do play around with 50/50 combos a lot. I do prefer usually that they are roasted separately, but if i had to do what you propose i would grab some Peru Ceja de Selva Estate and Ethiopian Harrah from beanbay and roast just prior to or on first snaps of 2nd crack.

      Can't go too far wrong with half Ethiopian and half Indo/PNG.

        Yep, I was going to say if you like African beans you could do worse than to pick one Ethiopian and either the Sulawesi Blue or Wahgi. And if you more into smoother blends (which I tend to like more in milk), you can go for either of the Brazils or or the Peru C de S, and mix it with a central (only the Mexican available at moment). I tend to like the South/Central blends at 60/40 or 70/30 though. Full disclosure.....I'm a hack but I know what my palate likes.

            Just cracked open another amazing 2 bean blend - 40% Mexican, 60% Ethiopian, pre-roast blended and roasted to about CS8-9 (approx). Surprisingly even roast.
            Quite stunning through milk - and very intersting as an espresso. That mexican adds a real mango/papaya type fruityness.

            Quite surprising - I'll be going back for more!!

              PNG Wahgi aa and Tanzanian Uru 50/50% - post blended - both pulled at first snap of 2nd crack a very nice CS9

              I usually feel the first grind by hand to put me in the range and then adjust the grind to know where to go after the first shot but the first shot was a very tight doppio ristretto, it came out THICK and creamy, decided straight up to use the shot and add some milk for a cap and damn it was rich, smooth and super sweet, I can only imagine it getting better as days go on, definitely going to try this as espresso after a few more days rest.

              I'm really going to have to hold off from grinding more for a few days as I will be out of it before it reaches peak

              Time to get myself a behmor for bigger batch sizes.

                half Indo/PNG.
                either the Sulawesi Blue or Wahgi

                For mine, the Wahgi imparts much different qualities to the cup than a Sumatran or Sulawesi. I don't think PNG = Indo in coffee terms. Likewise, an Ethiopian Gambella will produce a different flavour characteristic than a Yirgacheffe or Harrar.

                But yes, I agree that you can combine any Ethiopian with either a Wahgi or an Indo with good results, but don't expect the same tasting blend.

                To me, part of the fun in roasting is learning what characteristics different beans impart and anticipating what you might expect in the cup. I understand that others are just happy to have something that tastes OK.

                  Agree totally :-)
                  They are certainly different beans, and do give different results to the blends. And the more advanced your palette, the more differences you can pick.
                  However, if I were looking to buy only 2 types of beans, then you can't go too far wrong with a basic Mocha Java combo of African + Indo (and PNG, maybe even Indian seems to work well in the island mix). It just always seems to give a great result, especially in a pre-roast blend - a nice balance of smooth sweet body + earthy cocoa.
                  I'll happily admit my palette is pretty basic. I've yet to taste any tobacco, leather or aged oak :-) .

                  But I do now have a bag of Harrar - so will go searching for blueberries! Off to the shed now…
