  • Bull Elephant blend (GB12 Silver medal)

    This is another variation on my 4:3:2:1 base plus mocha java robusta.

    In this case, the base is split into 3 parts Indian Elephant Hills, and 1 part India Monsoon Malabar Gold.
    So really it's a 5 component blend. (3:1-3:2:1)

    Base.
    3 parts (180g) Indian Elephant Hills
    1 part (60g) India Monsoon Malabar Gold
    Mocha.
    3 parts (180g) Ethiopian Ghimbi
    Java.
    2 parts (120g) Sulawesi Blue
    Robusta.
    1 part (60g) India Kaapi Royale Bold

    making a total of 600 grams which was roasted all together in a covered coretto using a 1600 watt GMC heatgun.
    All the beans are from Coffeesnobs Beanbay.

    The roast profile went as follows:
    1:00 30 degC
    2:00 62
    3:00 87
    4:00 108
    5:00 124
    6:00 136
    7:00 147
    8:00 157
    9:00 166
    10:00 174
    11:00 182
    12:00 189
    13:00 196
    14:00 202 cut power input by 7%
    15:00 204
    16:00 208
    17:00 216
    17:40 221 into the cooler

    Future experimentation lies in slowing down the early profile. Currently I just let it rip.

    What's in a name?
    Obviously, it had to have an elephant in it. But the Bull Elephant part comes from the metaphor "Subtle as a Bull Elephant on heat".
    I'm no expert on tasting coffee, but I would describe this as being big & bold.

    I'll add the feedback notes from Golden Bean when I receive them. Taste impressions welcome from anybody who tries this at home.
    I don't drink black coffee, but feedback welcome if you do.

    Excellent post commanda, good on you for sharing with the community!

    It's an interesting blend on paper and obviously the judges in the Golden Bean liked it a lot.

    10% monsoon and 10% robusta would create crema that you could stand a spoon in... nice addition.
    The near 30% Elephant would provide a lot of balancing sweetness and the Ghimbi and Blue would introduce fruit, spice and cocoa.

    I'll give this a go sometime on the commercial drum and run it in the grinder at the snobbery to give you some random tasters feedback.

          And so, to the judges sheets, of which there were 2.
          Sweetness 8 + 8
          Flavour 8 + 8
          Aftertaste 8 + 8
          Balance (coffee cut through milk) 8 + 9
          giving a score of 65/80

          The following were ticked:
          Bright/Lively
          Sweet
          Chocolatey (twice)
          Caramelly
          Nutty (twice)
          Fruity

          and the comments:

          Wow! Left wanting more! Lovely Lovely coffee!

          Lovely rich dark crema. Sweetness straight up! Great Flavour. Hung right in there. Good beverage.

            Congratulations commanda Amanda!! Any and all commercial roasters and cafes would be flying their kite with a result like that, giving press releases
            and getting quotes on making their doorways bigger! The comments speak volumes for your coffee, your humbleness speaks volumes about you.

            You must be happy that on the day, when it counted, your coffee was made as well as you roasted it!

                    I've also had good results in blends with the Monsoon Robusta.

                      In a bit of a tight situation at the moment... I have to make about 12 kilos worth of roasted coffee for friends and family and would really love to use this great blend, but my budget is only $160 ATM. Something I really want to try out is the body of the robust a beans. In my roasting I haven't tried a bean that adds substantial mouthfeel and body to a coffee, so would love to do that.

                      Could this blend be changed in some way to accommodate for the price range? Any ideas?

                        At the moment: India Elephant Hills AA Grade 5.00kg $55.00, ROBUSTA Indian Monsoon 2.00kg $15.00, and Sulawesi Blue Peaberry 2.5kg $33.75. With shipping this comes to about 135. Even tho this will make about 8.5-9 kilos, that should be fine for the amount I need...
                        Would these beans work at this ratio? 5-2.5-2 ?? I know this is almost becoming unrelated, but I do want to try some of the key flavours of this blend (even though current budget wont allow to entirely).

                          Please don't do this. This blend was specifically designed to overcome the 3 week latency associated with the competition. Your proposed ratios and dropping of key ingredients won't work.

                          For your Xmas gift roasting, go back to a more standard Mocha/Java blend.

                          If you get :
                          7.5Kg of mocha (ethiopian gambella or harrar, for example)
                          5Kg of java (sulawesi blue peaberry is nice)
                          2Kg of Robusta Indian Monsoon

                          and blend proportionately, in round numbers you'll have 51%, 35%, 14%

                          and your 14.5Kg of greens should make 12Kg of roasted beans.

                          And it should (if my math is correct) cost about $165 plus postage.

                          I'll do a roast of this myself for my next batch in about a weeks time.
