Panama + Ethoipian + Sumatran

I have been roasting a blend of Panama, Sumatran and Yemen 45/25/30 for a while now, produces an intense bitter/sweet espresso with heaps of spice and cocoa, great in milk as well with sweet choc/spice notes.

The first time I made greenman's blend it was with Panama Esmerelda Geisha + Yemwn Bani Ismael + Sulawesi Icantrememberwhich in the ratios mentioned above. In the words of a colleague I was sharing with, it was my best coffee ever. All top qualioty ingredients

I have some other Beanbay Panama which I haven't got a good roast out of either as SO or in the blend above until...
I blended Panama El Huacal + Ethiopian Ghimbi + Indo (a Flores bean the first time). The result was sensational. The Ghimbi is 2010 so at its use-by date and tasted flat in other blends or alone. The Flores is a rather non-descript bean and the Panama, as mentioned, hadn't been producing the goods.
Drinking again now but with a Bali rather than a Flores. Again, excellent but I think the one with the Flores was better. The beans didn't seem to be competing with each other.
It's a good case of a blend where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I've always liked a Mocha Java +1 blend… have tried it with a few things, but the centrals certainly always seem to deliver! The Mexicans have worked well - seem to add the 'zing' to the deep chocolate base - kinda choc + mint, or choc + orange…

Yeah greenman talked about his blend ratio (45%P, 30% Y, 25%I) in a reply to a thread about a Bolivian + Yemen + Sumatran bag-end blend I made a couple of years ago.
A Mocha Java on a Brazilain base was a staple CS blend for a while

It's a bit wintery down this way. Not unusual to get pre-winter cold-snaps but you can have the snow to yourself, thanks.

Now that I've adjusted my beliefs about where Millthorpe is (I was confusing it with Millfield in the Hunter Valley....couldn't imagine it would snow there in may)......I decided to give this a go with the Pan. El Huacal, Yemen Mocha Ismaili and Sulawesi Tana Toraja (I don't have any Sumatran)....not sure this morning's weather helped (couldn't hear 1C on either the Yemen or the Sulawesi) but all components look and smell great. Should be ready to give it a go in 8-9 days.....looking fwd to it. In the mean time I'll just have to put up with the Maui.

Funny enough I just made a similar blend.
I had 100g of sidamo I wanted to use up and thought I'd make a mokha Java style by mixing it with 100g sulawesi toraja. But then I decided to add 60g of a Panama bean that I've never been able to get much joy out of. It's well balanced and bright but just a bit ordinary somehow (life's too short to waste on boring beans when there's so much great stuff about).
So I put the lot together for a few days to try and even out the moisture a bit and then roasted (in my baby roaster) only just into the beginning of 2C.
Wow, I was so surprised.
It's got a real depth to it, some brightness still and a lingering, changing aftertaste. Probably the best filter roast I've ever done.
Shame I'll probably not be able to reproduce it but that's the joy of coffee I guess - the times when it all just comes together.

Must be the day for Mocha/Java + 1's, this morning I roasted up some Peru/Ethiopian Gambella and the last of my Sulawesi Blue Peaberry (4/3/2). I have done a MJ blend with just the Gamb and Sulawesi but never added in the Peruvian. I also bought some of the Panama the other week so I will have to give the above blend a go later this week.
