After all, thats what were here for, to learn from each others experiences. I know Ive learned heaps from other members so it only seems fair to put some back into the community when the opportunity arises.

One of my fave blends by the way .....

Remy dont know much about the mexican but I blended thanks to some help from Mal ,60%Png Kinjibi,20%Kenya AA and 20% Dominican Barahona for my christmas blend and it was great I think the Png Kinjibi is a great bean and I need more. I call this blend now  African NrG hope Mal doesnt mind.
I think Greenman has tried  a very similar blend as well.

But whatever you do if you like it do it again after all its youre coffee.

Experimenting is the name of the game Remy, Ive found with the quality of beans Andy serves up to us each beanbay month its hard to do a bad roast, they all taste good, some great and some simply fantastic.
Ive graduated to blending 3-4 beans now and have been getting good results, nice rich textures and flavours with heaps of body and lingering aftertaste. Ive got a selection of 8 different beans and origins now and have been adjusting the 4 bean blend 1 bean at a time to compare differences.
Enjoy your roasting and blending and hurry up with your roaster project!!!

Remy: like you Id rate myself low on the "esperience" stakes, but PNG Kinjibi Peaberry is one of my standbys and I use it in lots of different blends...

I always roast separately and blend using digital (100g) scales for each shot. That way I keep valve bags of SO beans too.

Im a great fan of African (and Ethiopian specifically) beans, the PNG blends nicely with these. Ive discovered 80-90% PNG with the balance Ethiopian gives me the Ethiopian taste with the PNG filling it out very nicely. The cup tastes PNG. With the Ethiopian "over the top". Reversing the percentages gives an Ethiopian cup with a subtle smoothness that you cant quite identify. Ethiopians are pretty dominant, so this is a bit extreme.

All that seems pretty reasonable, but my experimentation with 50/50 blends has always been pretty unconvincing. Nice, but not "interesting", if you see what I mean. Ive found that up to about 30% seems to be my limit for sliding in a flavour that I like.

But blending is good fun, dont give up. Itll taste fine!

    Cheers
    /Kevin

PNG Peaberry and Mexico Veracruz blend?

I know nothing about coffees,. regions,. whats arabic, whats robusta... whats is good to blend with what for whatever reasons,...yadda yadda yadda. I just know that I have really enjoyed the coffees I have made with PNG Peaberry and the Mexico Veracruz Organic HG.

So,.. based on my very limited esperience (OMG esperience?? even my spelling is being affected by coffee  ) and knowledge,.. I thought I might like to blend the two for my next roast.

By the time you read this,.. I will have already started the roast. Im just going to do a 50/50 pre-roast blend since I dont have a clue what difference it will make by adjusting the percentages in favour of one bean over the other anyway.

So knowing that the roast will have already been done anyway,.. because I have to grab the chance to roast now, while I have the time available to me,.. can anyone still offer their experience and tell me whether this has a chance of turning out ok,.. or whether Im wasting time blending these two because of their particular characteristics or whatever.

I am tired of the darn popper, and tired of running out of roasted beans because the roasts are so small.. so Im just going to try roasting my blend in a larger batch, using a heavy based pot over the BBQ side burner. This ought to be interesting,.and arm tiring no doubt.

EDITED TO ADD: Roast done,.. a bit uneven,. flat sides of many beans are a little too dark I think despite constant vigorous stirring/mixing with asian style wire and bamboo ladle. Smells nice already and cant wait to see what this blend brings to the cup.
Working...
