    Re: STARTER PACK BLEND

Ive been roasting now for 18 months and almost reached my 100th roast but have not been in any hurry to blend.

I have on a handful of occasions but am still enjoying trying different beans as SOs.

I have found a few favourites and am learning to bring the best out of them.

Like roasting itself and upsizing to a corretto, I suppose eventually I will blend more often.

    No rush though.

    Hmmm,

This is just me of course, but I would recommend that you roast each bean as a Single Origin until you find a roast profile for each that produces results in the cup that you really like. Once youve got a handle on the attributes of each and the roast profile required, you can then give some thought to the prospect of blending two or more of the varietals you have, based solely on your S.O. cupping impressions. Any blending that you do would be best carried out as Post Roast blends so that you can experiment easily with the proportions of each immediately prior to grinding, rather than blending an entire batch. Once youve gained an understanding of the proportions of the blend that really work for you, you can then give some consideration to pre-roast blending for future batches.

    Hope this helps a bit.....

    Cheers,
    Mal.

I think thats the way to go so the moisture content in the beans will equalise out and you will get a more even roast.

you got a great starter pack there!

    enjoy

    STARTER PACK BLEND

Received my starter pack on Monday comprising India Mysore Nuggets A Grade (unfortunate name but nice bean), Columbian Volcan Galeras, Brazil Monte Carmelo & Ugandan Bugisu AA. This is only my second roast ever so clearly Im no expert at this sort of thing & I wasnt sure whether these should blend well together in theory or not but the individual tasting notes indicated they could be compatible.

I just tried 100g, using 25% of each in a Breville Crazy Popper. Roasted to about 10 seconds into the second crack. Degassed for 24 hours. The result - thick, rich crema with a sweet, chocolaty taste. Im very happy indeed with the results & keen to blend up some more.

Given that Im happy with this blend is there any reason I couldnt just empty each individual pack straight into the heshan bag so they mix together?
