  • Best SOs for 09?

OK - maybe a little premature before last bean bay, but it must be that time of year to pick out your SO highlights. Keen to see which beans rocked our palates.... Ill get it started with my top 3:

    1. Malawi AA  - this was literally a surprise packet, found in my overdue sample pack. For an African this was not as winey or as intense as others, just smooth with plenty of choc/caramel.

    2. Peru Ceja de Selva - talk about sweet this was over the top almost as a SO but magic as a base in any blend. Use it all the time.

    3. Ethiopian Kuza - A bit like the Malawi above and reminded me of the Kenyan Rititi too - clean and balanced.

Cant say Ive come across a bad one this year although at the risk of  being throttled and although it was still good, I thought the Waghi crop this year was not as good as last - flavours just not as developed/rich as 08???

I am still pining for more of last years Mountain Top Estate Bin 35 which to my mind is the best SO I have tasted.

But I also really liked all the SOs in the BB this year!

                Cheers

                  Bella Vista from EL Salvador.

I got an early taste of some of the Tanzanian Rononi this week from a colleague at work who got some in her CS Brown sample pack. I think it may just scrape in to my 2009 top beans if I can roast and drink it before New years eve.

Ive had so many good SOs this year that it is hard to choose.

If pushed, Id have to say its whats going in the grinder tomorrow. ;D

The Zimbabwe SO was an absolute stand out in my book. There was also some Honduras, however that may have been the year before.

I am not having any luck at all with the Peru Ceja de Selva Estate that so many people seem to enjoy. Maybe I am not letting it rest long enough.

For me, my staple SO is the Yirgacheffe.

The Fair Trade Bolivia Cavanari. If Andy is able to get more if this in the future ill be stocking up.

PNG Waghi was a excellent even roaster and good through a range of depths. Still have some left that Im enjoying this week.

Yirg as alway a stand out, imo and contrary to popular opinion its a great espresso bean be taken to the start of second crack.
