  • Which first...

So I have run out of the two bean bags that came with my machine (Shed Shandy and Urban Blend) both of which I enjoyed. I have ordered and received my show bag of roasted beans from Andy and would like some hints on what to open first. I have:

    Fiefy’s Latte Art 2011 Organic @ Origin
    Brazil Permium Bourbon
    Ethiopian Harrar Longberry
    PNG Kone Ka Estate

These were all roasted 29th May. I was just reading the thread about Fiefy’s which said that it should be rested for at least two weeks… So what would you guys say would be ok to use tomorrow? Or at least the one not going to be ruined….

Both Fiefys blend and the Harrar Longberry will benefit from a longer rest (perhaps 7-10 days for the Harrar), so your best bet is to crack open the Kona Ka or the Brazilian bean.

What machine did you buy from Chris, xmlstu?

Thanks Ristrom, I got a Compak K3 Touch and a Izzo Vivi as an upgrade from a super auto that broke down after two years. Super happy so far!

I reckon you could give all of them a try now and see what you like as the coffee develops.

From memory though, I think Fiefys is meant to peak at about 10 days and I just finished a bag of it that was over the magical three weeks and it was still delicious!

Andy said its best when rested for two weeks, and generally is excellent right through until about four weeks.

Thats what i do whenever i roast, but the OP is coming up from a super auto so it may well be his first experience with a quality grinder so having to chop and change beans and dial it in each time probably isnt ideal.

Given hes only got 250g of each bean, personally id be using one of either the Kona Ka or the Brazil, before moving to the Harrar when its at its peak (which i personally think is about 14 days post roast) and then onto the Fiefys blend, which apparently lasts much longer than most.

That way he gets a chance to concentrate on dialing in his grinder with consistency whilst also getting to experience each of his beans at their peak, or as near to it as possible.

Fair enough Ristrom! Just thought since hed gone through some of Chris blends already he might be getting comfortable with his set up.

PS, just realised it was Fiefys 2010 blend that is apparently good at at Day 10 - my bad!

Whichever way he goes hes got some cracking beans to experience over the next few weeks.

I think this may be true! I was thinking of trying them all initially, but I became worried by the amount of waste. Thanks for the suggested order. I started with the Brazil this morning, I think I was a bit fine with the grind, but this is going to be a good one. It’s good to be drinking espresso rather than having to mask the flavour of a super auto with milk.

drink them and dont sweat the small stuff.

If you enjoy them that great if you dont at least you will know what not to buy next time.

sorry to hijack but it seemed pointless making a second thread.
I too just received a sample pack with:

                        Espresso Wow
                        PNG Kone Ka Estate
                        Colombian Volcan Galeras
                        Sumatran Mandheling Select

                        all roasted 17/07

which are good now and which need the 1+week rest?

                          Re: Which first...

You dont mention how you will brewing your coffee and the rest period depends on individual taste. Some are happy to start drinking almost straight after roasting; I usually dont touch my roasts until at least Day 10.

I think you could get away with starting on the PNG and move on to the WOW. Or drink these two concurrently to give you a contrast between a single origin and a blend.

The Colombian and Sumatran tend to improve with longer rest periods in my experience.

You might even try some of your own blending such as mixing a little Colombian and the same qty of PNG together.

                            ah my bad, espresso/lattes

Decided to try the PNG. Still battling with the grind so its half gone already :P

thanks for the tips. Until I got this delivery I was using 9mth old (shudder) beans, so I really couldnt wait
