  • Yemeni - Mocha Ismaili

Well, I roasted this in the same way I roast all new beans - about 10.5mins to FC then a slowish ramp up which hits the first random snap of 2C in 4 mins and I pull it right there.

A colleague and I enjoyed (what an understatement!) an espresso in the tea room this morning.

Lovely viscous pour, stunning aroma. Smooth as silk on the palate with amazing fruit on the front palate anchored with a dark chocolate background (KJM has been reading wine tasting wank literature!).

I agree 100% with Andy. If I was to be marooned on a desert island this is the bean Id take. (Of course, with the necessary gen set to run the espresso machine etc etc)..

My first bag of this one hits day five tomorrow.
Its taken all of my strength to hold off this long.

I can help!!!!! Ill pay the freight! Happily remove the temptation from your reach. No problems. Small, unmarked non-consecutive bills OK?

I would be happy just chewing on the roasted beans once the gen set ran out of fuel.

This Ismaili is nearly "double coffee", the bold flavours and body are all doubled for the same given amount of beans.

        Enjoy!

I couldnt agree more. Today (one day later!) the taste is even better! I hope the remaining supplies are well secured in the Snobbery - as the one bag I have gets lower, my thoughts might turn to crime :-?

            I missed out!
            :-[

I roasted 5kg preBeanBay and that went to the comp in Europe with me and sadly I actually missed out on getting any more.

I do have a stash of the other 4 Yemens though.
            8-)

                Re: Yemeni - Mocha Ismaili

I am enjoying my first 1st Popper roast of this from 5 days ago.
1st crack was at about 4 mins
2nd crack started at about 9 mins
Pulled a little after rolling 2nd crack.
Roasting went a bit too fast - possibly due to being a 150g batch.
I would say roasted to CS10.5
Would appreciated recommendations on roasting this bean.

                Gotta say Delicious! Very smooth.
And I obviously need to read some wine tasting lit.

Maybe this is sacrilege, as it is beautiful by itself, but what would blend well with this?
                I am a latte drinker

Welcome to the popper club. The proof of the popping is in the drinking.

I don’t have any Yeman. If what you are doing is giving you great results, stick to it and drink it the way that gives you the greatest pleasure. Perhaps try a lighter roast and see how you like it.

Now that you have fresh coffee you won’t want to drink stale coffee again.

                    Re: Yemeni - Mocha Ismaili

Mr Duck - Id suggest you aim for 3 to 4 mins between first and second and you pull it just before second.

Every roaster is different, so giving any sensible advice is a bit hard, but basically these guys seem to be pretty much the same as all the Yemenis Ive done. Hard beans that take a fair bit of heat to get going.

I ran out of Malawi beans for an espresso the other day and topped it off with these. Probably something like 20% Yemen. Fabulous - worked brilliantly - so much so that this is now the preferred tipple for daughter#2 who has the Malawi roasted for her.

If you want to try this with milk, Id probably suggest a similar (20%) quantity in something you already roast for milk. Youll lose the delightful mouthfeel of course and possibly some of the fruit, but I suspect it will be lovely. I might risk trying that on Mrs KJM tomorrow

                    /Kevin

Try a blend of 35% just cleared rolling 1st crack and 65% just starting into rolling 2nd crack as an espresso about 3 days post roast. Had some of the 2010 batch of this coffee, simply stunning in the black.

Hi aficionados did anyone else with the Yemeni mocha Ismaili detect any rodent notes in the coffee? I have so far found 4 large rat nuggets in the SO ! I am thinking this is an Arabic version of Kopi Luwak . I havent roasted any yet . I am going to have to be careful not to roast any of the small dark peaberrys . Perhaps I may try a sub batch of Yemeni Cafe rodentica , not sure what it will cup like but expecting it might taste like sh&@? 8-)

                          Ewwww yuck!
Im surprised though, rodents dont eat coffee and all the bags were sealed grainpro so it must have happened during the milling I guess.

The nuggets were really dry and black. I guess it has been a contaminant from the source? Anyways high temperature will kill any Salmonella in the roasting as long as I can forget about it when Im drinking it!

Geez. Now youve got me worried! But I do check the greens before I roast - to me Yemen means rocks! Not organic-at-origin rocks though! :-?
