advice needed on quantity of coffee

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey guys,
Iíve finally got around to weighing my ground coffee before putting it in the PF..and 14 grams is a bit short of the full basket load Iíve been using before I tamp...

Iíve also now have a better tamp and been to the bathroom scales to see what 14kilos feels like, after this I had to grind finer to get the required extraction time of 25 secs for 30mls..as I reckon I was over tamping courser grounds before to get the extraction time right

anyone else found this after weighing the ground coffee ?

    hope this makes sense..

    tommo,

14 grams in what basket? on what machine?

14 grams is only a "nominal" dose for a "hypothetical" standard double basket....

Yes, 14-16 grams is about the correct dose for a Silvia double in a Silvia machine....

Put a Synesso double in to replace the Silvia and it will take about 20 grams for the best dose level, and an LM double basket in a Silvia - about 18 grams..... a Synesso double basket on my La Cimbali - about 21 to 22 grams. ("standard La Cimbali baskets about 16 grams).

Best results are generally obtained when the grinds (after tamping) just touch the showerscreen..... and depending on the depth of the basket, the height the showerscreen is above the bottom of the basket - therefore the weight of grinds for best extraction will vary all over the place!

Using weight as the determining factor is a bit like using numbers on a certain brand of grinder on various units of that model..... grinding at 13 on one will give a totally different result as it will on another grinder also at 13....

So find the weight which suits the basket machine combo (might be 17grams.....) and then weigh out your 17 grams each time if you must....

Me, I dose to a slight mound above the rim of the basket.... tamp.... lock... extract....

It is consistency of dose and tamping which is important (with the correct amount of grounds) - and that amount may not be 14 grams!

ah..that clears things up..its a Isomac millenium..and double basket...sorry I thought it was 14 grams, as everywhere Ive read its always 14 grams..Ive never heard anything other than that until now...
i dont want to wiegh it every time..but as its and electronic doserless model I was trying to set the grinder to a double shot in two grinds,,hence the scales

very important infomation for a new user

Thatís exactly what I do and second JavaBs comments
For my machine the depth I need to tamp is aprox 8 mm to clear the shower screen
