roast their own?
Do any cafes use fake coffee aroma to attract customers? A new cafe opened near me, and walking past there is the strongest coffee smell all around the street and 20 metres down the road. It is actually a very nice smell also. It is not as though they are making tons of coffee - maybe 5 customers. So how does it smell so much?
roast their own?
nope. I think I will have to sniff their walls/tables to see where it coming from (might look just a little unusual!)- it is just such a strong smell I cant believe it is from the minimal amounts of coffee they are making.
My dear wife often points out...
"How come I cannot smell coffee when I walk past a really busy Gloria Jeans, yet we have visitors pull-up in the street who can smell our coffee?"
Certain blends to produce a great aroma, fresh coffee certainly helps a lot. Maybe their air-con is sucking it all out at roof level. You will get a huge difference with the lid off the doser too.
Whats the coffee like at this cafe Damian?
aircon could be an option.
I havent dared go in yet - it is one side of a womens hair salon! Ill wait for some female company.
If this is really their coffee I am very impressed - it is a really good smell. My coffee has never smelt anything like it, nor any cafes I have been to. Once I manage to get in there, Ill find out what they are using.
Synthetic smells via aircon and exhaust are pretty common and I wouldnt be surprised if they might have them.
There were lots of Aussie companies using them in the 90s...Just drive by KFC in the arvo on the way home from work for example. Not sure that they actually use them but it was uncanny and always at that time.... ::)
where are they located
it could be coffee roasting
it could be coffee scented candle
bayside melbourne. They are not roasting. I ahve a roaster near me (gigante), but their smell is more grass/popcorn.
`Just go and buy a cup of coffee,if there is eye candy then thats a bonus.
A hair salon? Im surprised that you can smell anything over the huge amount of stinky chemicals that normally billow from those places. I wonder if those same chemicals help carry the aroma?
"A blend of fine Central American coffees with a dash of hydrogen peroxide and chlorofluorocarbons"
Im with elbeano and I think you are just going to have to go in and "take one for team" Damian.
What kind of coffee snob are you Damian?
Get in there!
This is freakin hilarious haha
Fresh coffee, freshly ground is my favourite smell. I love walking outside in the mornings after Ive been making coffee, and walk back in to the aroma. Irresistible!
How can you resist, Damian? You gotta check out if the coffee matches the aroma. Its gotta be better than some cafes that have no aroma at all (probably from stale coffee ground a half hour before you walk in).
yep I know I have to go in there! it just smells too good! Ill report back once I have my perm.
When I roast coffee it smells nothing like it does 5 days later in the grinder? am I missing something? My wife reckons I am burning grass clippings??
well I went out for my coffee - they were closed. But now that I had got over the smell, I had a look to see what the cafe actually was. It is a villa & hut cafe. I thought they were furniture stores, but looking at their website they do lots of different things. They are a franshise. They seem to promote their aroma lots in the website - I am now 99% convinced I am smelling some sort of synthetic smell like 2muchcoffeeman suggests. Believe me this smell was so strong and good it got your mouth watering - just what they need to bring in the customers, and it has worked on me! Their umbrellas state coffee from "organic coffee co", which there is no info on the web.
Ill go back for my coffee, but I am convinced it is not a real coffee smell. Anyone else near a villa & hut cafe and noticed the smell?
A friend of mine is an industrial chemist. In a previous job he worked for a company that made colours and aromas for food, amongst other things. One of the aromas they made was for the instant coffee manufacturers, which was applied to the underside of the foil seal. When you burst the foil, the aroma comes out, as if from fresh coffee granules.
Really Baldryk? *That is soooo bad!
Looking forward to seeing Damians perm though
