Site Sponsors: anyone use Barter card?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Im secretary of an amateur theatrical group that are staging RENT! in the Southern Highlands in July (my son has one of the leads). Were hoping to have coffee during intermission, but my Silvia isnt going to cut it and no one else in the show has anything remotely usable. The director has amassed a lot of points on her Barter card, and is interested in an HX to use in the show. I guess shed get a little use out of it later on as well :P

    Hmm, it seems not. :)

Oh well, back to trying to find a machine we can hire for a few weeks without breaking the almost non-existant bank.

Viviane, why not try the site feature where you can send a message to all the sponsors at once...rather than just posting a thread...

Its at the bottom of the list...

barter card is one of those things that sounds good, but kinda isnt. Essentially you get your "trade dollars" that can only be used at trade partners. now these trade partners are generally not competitive with their price as they are getting trade dollars that have limitations on spending. of course then they get more trade dollars to spend and other trade partners increase their price. because of this the trade dollars are technically devaluing from inflation, and tend to be useful when starting a business that isnt going to be competitive to force other trade partners to spend money with them. As trade dollars are also a form of currency attempting to usurp the current Australian dollar, its almost treason. If youve got the trade dollars, you might as well use them as they cant be used for much and you end up being gouged on the price anyway. its an attempt at a tax dodge that isnt a very good one.

disclaimer; this is based on my own observations of the bartercard system. I dont and have never woked for them, and have never been a member. I just know some people who own bartercard offices/territories and have pieced it together and made up my own mind. end rant ;D

Thanks Scoota, strangely enough I was wondering why no one had thought of a direct message thing like this when I started the thread. :P

doug81, you may or may not be right about barter card, I dont use it so I dont particularly care. Im simply trying to sort something out for someone who has a surprising amount of points. I guess if price gouging is common, then youre gouging someone else who is doing the same thing. If everyone winds up paying higher prices without actually parting with cash, they may still all think they have a bargain. And they could be right. :)

fair enough. on a more constructive note, have you spoken to bartercard? they might be able to refer to you a member that stocks what you want if none of the sponsors are members?

We are members of Bartercard, but do not offer machines on barter due to a number of bartercard related issues.
