After reading this thread, I was flicking through the June BeanScene. Guess who appears on the last page: your friendly antipodean correspondents: Javaphile with his Gothot (not gonna explain - youll have to get the mag) and Mal just as I imagined him to be - meant as a compliment, mate. I couldnt work out what that was between your legs that you were holding but then I realised (not gonna explain - youll have to get the mag)!

Ah yes, how did I miss that? Its meet the Mods month!

Ive met Scoots in person and her tale is a familiar one so there was no curiosity to sate: I know what lies beneath (the helmet) and she is as nice as she appears on CS.

I went to the letterbox today, expecting the usual bills, etc and found the latest Beanscene mag! The mag just gets better with every issue. Now there are TWO pages dedicated to CSers. Scoots has maintained her air of mystery by having her photo taken in disguise 8-)

A slight disappointment for me was realising that I didnt win the Domobar Super. :( I guess the ol Sunbeam will have to do for now.....

Yeah I reckon my Domobar must have got lost in the mail too ;) Another vote for a great magazine, seems to have found a good balance between telling an experienced Barista how to suck eggs, while not alienating an enthusiastic newcomer to the industry.

... Id always wondered how those de-stoners worked :)

my only comment is there needs to be some caption to the great photos!
some of the stories have photos, that I would love to know the detail of...

I had a great read of the magazine last night and really enjoyed it. However, I agree about the absence of captions, which I noticed on previous editions also. *I think it would be standard to caption every photo unless it is just of the person featured in the article.

Loking forward to the next one.

    ;D ;D

I was a bit hesitant to reply mate as I didnt know which of the photos was used until I received my own copy, which just arrived today. That almost indistinguishable presence you refer to (so eloquently too I might add ;)) is one of our faithful hounds named "Pumpkin". She always helps out when ever Im roasting and if a camera is brought out, well, what can I say, she turns into a bit of a media tart.

Unfortunately though, just as the photo was taken she turned her head away and missed out on her opportunity of widespread fame and glory. Being a young female with a philosophical outlook on life, about 30 seconds after this photo was taken she was off playing with her younger sibling having forgotten all about coffee-roasting and photo-shoots ;). Therere a few more photos of her in the CSer Pets thread that actually show her face if youd like to see her better side ... ::)

    Re: June BeanScene

Well, I received my copy today and the first thing I went to was the much vaunted CoffeeSnobs area - brilliant stories from each of our good Mods!

But I was disappointed it was only Pumpkin in the photo... :) Just joshing, Mal - I thought it might have been some sort of gadget, but instead it was a beautiful black Lab (I think?) You remind me so much - in life story and in looks - of my beautiful father except probably about 20 years younger or so and my Dad didnt have the passion for coffee that you do!

And I love the Shoei helmet, Scoots - stunning colours!

Java - the Gothat looks strangely interesting: Ill have to go read up the story, although it did remind me somewhat of a set of canisters on an angle... ;)

Great read, as usual - now I suppose I better go and read the rest of the magazine!

    Cheers

Yes, got my copy today as well! A great read again...though Im with the others here who have asked for captions to some of the photos. Some pictures are very self explanatory but I dont know everyone in the industry yet!

A bit of a surprise to get a full page spread but well... :-[...you know, what can I say... 8-)

Ill add my support for photos with captions too (if its possible) for pretty well all the reasons already outlined by contributors above. While those people who are actively involved in the industry may be on almost first name terms with everyone else, it would be nice to see some names properly attributed to their owners.... :)

Pumpkins actually a Staffy/Bull Arab/Neapolitan Mastiff cross in unknown proportions (by us) and has a beautifully shiny, dark brindle coat. She fairly sparkles when outside playing in the sunshine. Heres a photo of her shortly after acquiring her... http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1127345297/50#68 and theres a couple more of her throughout the thread a bit more grown up... ;D

    Great publication as usual.
Scoota, Mal and Javaphile, great to put a face to the names (even if only through a brain bucket Scoota) and reading about your passion for the little brown bean and the joy of being a Coffeesnob.

Dunno mate but each edition seems to be even better than the last; heaps of great stuff to read. Ive read every article so far and Im about two-thirds the way through. There arent many mags around these days that keep me as interested as Bean Scene does... 8-)

Trip was great, very hectic, my son had been to HK recently and came with us, he was tour leader and set a cracking pace, I managed to get to some good cafes and saw plenty of Charbucks and Pacific which I avoided like the plague.
I loved Corridor, the coffee was ok but it was a great little cafe and close to our hotel.
I did some reviews on Melbourne Coffee Review-Corridor, Zambra, Crema, Soft Aroma, MGM Patisserie Macau.
I last visited HK 38 years ago so the changes were amazing, loved the MTR, my wife loved the shops!!!!

Great to hear :) Though seeing your cafe footprints, it seems you should have been tour leader. You did well!

I like Corridor too, although their espresso is more consistent than their milk based drinks. But my top rated cafe is still Crema in TST.

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
    Hello all,

Just a quick note to say that I have put up the online version of my article here. If you are interested in how Fair Trade certification interacts with coffee quality, you might be interested to look at some of the sources in the endnotes. I thought that the Mercatus article was quite a good read. I have a few more sources that I havent stuck in the endnotes; if people are interested, I might have time to go back and do that later.

    Cheers,

    Luca
