I will do au_d2s job for him, and suggest you pick up an aeropress and kyocera hand grinder so that you can test the beans while you are out there.
Both are small, light, and help make a good coffee.

    Re: Malaysian coffee beans

Recently a mate bought me back some "Liberica" green beans from Malaysia (according to Tom at Sweet Marias a bit nasty compared to Robusta) anyway MAF decided to kill off any insects by cooking them for 15 hours at 85deg. When he picked them up they were still in the (shell) :-[ please insert correct name. They were very badly insect damaged so in the bin they went.
Hopefully you will have better success.

    Yeap I have.

From what I know, traditionally its 100% robusta wok roasted with salt and margarine.

Its got a really greasy mouthfeel to it and slightly salty. Apart from that, its quite nasty if you drink it without sugar.

    Brewed in a sock......literally....heh

    Where are you headed tashie?

Ipoh White Coffee....hmm....I have friends who bring back a "famous" 3 in 1 instant coffee packets, "Old Town" is the brand and they are from Ipoh. Stay away. :-?

I am actually from Borneo...the popular brands of freshly roasted coffees there are...ermm...different. The way the locals roast there is that they fry their beans in a wok with a generous scoop of butter.

I would say I much prefer the stuff we do here - I never knew coffees can have such life! Having said that, I still dont mind the Malaysian way of coffee. I drink that stuff is with lots of sweetened condensed milk, either hot or cold - which I treat as more of a dessert drink rather than coffee (considering the ingredients of butter, milk, sugar). Two different products I reckon, so I would not trust the recommendations too much as yet.

Having said that, I would be curious as to how Malaysian coffee dry roasted and put through an espresso machine would taste tho. Let us know if you have any success!

HAha Asian countries do love everything with about half a ton of sugar. Including coffee.

I dont have a roaster:( Im from KL, so I had seen the wok roasting and was tempted to try bringing back green beans and getting them roasted (no idea by who) but from the above posts it doenst seem to be a good idea.

I just thought since Java has some nice coffee, Malaysia isnt too far away - could be good? Guess not.
