Ok, portafilter is now naked but my camera batteries are flat so no shots as yet. I have to say that the triple basket is a whole other beast when it comes to making a shot. Its almost as if my tamping pressure doesnt reach all the way to the bottom of the basket. Anyone have any tips?

Yeah I believe I have the same problem. I haven’t used the triple for a while but I had some success with tamping twice by stopping the grinding mid way through filling the basket and tamping, then as normal. Its not ideal but it did help.

I dont use a a triple, an 18gram basket is the biggest Ranchilo make for the Silvia. As the grind is going in, I shake the PF to knock the clumps out and then give it a few decent taps before I tamp. I bang out pucks you could spin on their egde. ;D

Does anyone know if you can get bigger baskets for the little miss? ;)

The triple Grant is referring to is a LM knockoff 21gm I think and doesnt fit into my standard Rancilio portafilter. If cut properly the 21gm does squeeze into the crouchless portafilter but the extra size does make it an interesting job to extract a proper shot.

I got a LM triple basket and naked pf a week or so ago.. I have only used the triple so far on a few shots... but I agree that it is without a doubt harder to get a good dist/tamp with. I did nail one shot with it today... 45mls of goodness in about 40 secs.. a nice slooow squeeze seems to work well with the triple. Shot was delicious! Worth the refinement in skill it requires I think... although these are still very early days.

Re: Portafilter takes it all off

    Hi All,

Dont know if thisll help at all, but here goes....

As a result of a couple of strokes a few years ago, I dont have a lot of strength in my hands/arms anymore, especially the left side (right-handed fortunately). Anyway, in trying to work out a method that would allow me to apply consistent and effective tamps to my doubles, I developed the following procedure... might work for those huge 21 gram baskets too :).

After Ive dosed the PF up to the gunls, I tap the PF lightly on the bench a few times to settle the grinds down and then re-dose up to the gunls again and strike off level with the handle of the plastic coffee spoon measure that came with my Mokita.

This is when I reach for my trusty (and beautiful to behold) Pullman Tamper. The first Tamp is just a light one (2-3 Kgs) after which I tap the sides of the PF while "rolling" from side to side in order to remove any loose grinds.

The next Tamp is the business one and I apply it this time with a force between 10-12 Kgs and roll the Tamp from side to side and back to front of the PF while applying this force. This seems to have the affect of tamping ALL the grinds into a solid mass from top to bottom of the basket. Satisfied now that the Coffee Puck is contiguous throughout, I just finish up with the Tamper perpendicular to the top of the PF and a quick polishing spin for good luck ;D.

It seems to be the goods as since I have been tamping using this method, have never had anything but rock solid pucks after a shot is pulled... they dont even break or chip when knocking out in my knock-box :o. Anyway, seems like this should work with those huge PF baskets too and I would be interested to hear back from anyone who gives it a go.

    Cheers,
    Mal.

Thanks for the feedback everyone - Silvia is packed away ready to move at the moment, so no real chance to practice.

Dan is right, Im talking about the LM triple. Ill take photos comparing all the baskets shortly (when I finish the move and unpack) and youll be able to see the difference, it really is a big mother - although whether it actually gives me a better cup is yet to be decided.

Boris, I have p/n 521994 from coffeeparts.com.au. It holds 21 grams and fits my standard Silvia PF.

Hmm . . . Just had a look at coffeeparts basket #521994 (listed under Rancilio and Marzocco sections). Its listed as a 14g basket (not even 18g). How do you manage to pack in 21g, goatherder?

Im sure there was a recent thread somewhere around here about maxing out baskets for Silvia. . . Is the consensus that the 18g coffeeparts p/n 700757 (listed under Marzocco) is too big for a standard Silvia portafilter? Or is only a 21g basket too big?

BTW, I have both of the "standard" Silvia portafilters - they started shipping with the heavier, longer-handled pf only after I bought mine in 2004. The newer "standard" portafilter seems to be a tad deeper. Perhaps this will allow it to take deeper baskets than the earlier "standard" Silvia pf? So if anyone has a too-deep basket, perhaps check which version of the "standard" portafilter you have.

PN 700757 is the big basket - it doesnt fit in the standard Rancilio PF.
PN 300013 is the smaller double - it fits and hold more coffee than the double that comes with Silvia.
PN 521994 I havent seen or used sorry.

    Hi Grant,

When you say it doesnt fit the standard Rancilio PF, do you mean the original Silvia PF or the standard Rancilio commercial PF (larger). Heres a picture of both of them:

    Robster,

I was talking about the standard commercial portafilter that Silvia comes with these days.

    Thanks Grant.

I guess I wont be ordering that basket, then :(

I have a single and a double basket which are both bigger than the standard rancilio baskets that came with the Silvia. I really like the deeper single and use it all the time. When I want a weaker shot I use the rancilio one. Cant remember where I got my larger baskets from. Possibly from Mio, Genovese, Coffex or Moccopan (all here in Melb).

    Cheers,
