Yes, thats pretty much it Ho Man Lam.
AASCA follow the WBC rules and they say:

    2.2.3 Signature Beverage
    A. A signature beverage is a freestyle espresso-based beverage created by the competitor.

    B. It should be a beverage; the judges must be able to drink it.

    C. Each of the four signature beverages must contain a minimum of one espresso shot.

    D. The espresso must be prepared during the competitor’s performance time.

    E. A dominant taste of espresso must be present.

    F. The signature beverage can be any temperature.

    G. Any ingredients may be used in the signature beverage with the exception of alcohol, alcohol extracts
    or by-products, or illegal substances.

    H. The components of the signature drink should preferably be produced during the competition, i.e., the
signature beverage ingredients should be assembled on-site during the competition time.

    I. All ingredients must be disclosed upon request. Competitors must bring the original bottles and/or
packaging of all ingredients used in his/her signature beverage.

    J. No ingredients or substances other than ground coffee may be placed in the portafilters.

You can find the whole set of rules on:

    http://www.worldbaristachampionship.com/pdf/2009_WBC_Rules_and_Regulations.pdf

Make sure you read it! Often competition is won and lost due to someone not knowing the rules. If you get stuck on something in the rule book ask here and someone should be able to help out.

    Re: AASCA Comps - 2009-2010

    Thanks Andy for the updates

The AASCA website is updated with all the information regarding the Victorian Competition. *Closing date for entries is September the 11th, information session for all attending the show Saturday the 12th 4pm at the show ground off langs road main admin building. *The information session is scheduled so that everyone involved clearly understands the bump in procedures for all their gear, gates to enter, getting passes for entry, prep areas as this year we have 2 preparation areas to better house competitor set ups. *It will not be a case of rocking up on the day 1 hour before competing, the show has some protocols we need to adhere to to make sure it goes smoothly.
Tom Beaumont is the contact for all Volunteers and anyone who wants to help out and also all competitors and communication in general. *His details are located in the news item listed on the aasca page. *For all membership enquiries use the query form on the website. *
Vic Judges calibration is scheduled for Saturday the 19th *@ Grinders HQ Training room. *Costs are $50 for past judges and $100 for new judges, these are reduced costs on previous years which is great. *For all judges you must undergo a calibration or you cannot judge.

At this stage (Victoria) Saturday will most likely stage the Latte Art and Cup Tasting and Sunday will be the Barista competition. *Its a tough date but we have to go with the support the show offers us at this stage. *We understand the difficulties and hope you can forgive us *::)

Many thanks again for the support of Coffee Snobs in getting the word out.

    All the best,

    Ross

I have heard that there is a really good website (not too far away) that is perfect for finding this sort of thing.

In fact they have a pile of pictures from the last World Latte Art contest in Germany including close-ups of most of the best sig drinks and the pictures that were given to the judges.

    Try this site:

An assistant to watch the footy? *Sure!
    ;D

Grand Final day is already booked for me so I wont be there sadly. *Im a bit out of the ASSCA* loop this year but Im sure there will be plenty of things for CSrs to do if they want to get involved (and if they dont like footy) *

Yes, watching (or even better lending a hand in running the show) is certainly encouraged. *We will post details as we know em. *Last time (or was that the time before) they were held at Ultimo Tafe.

    Hey,
I was reading the rules for the latte art comp. Do we have to use standarized cups for the state heat? If so, how do we get them?
Are there rules posted on the AASCA or are the rules from the world latte art website? the latter says somethign about standarized cups.

    Thanks

AASCA dont have rules (I have mentioned before that I think we should have our own... it might happen one day)

The world rules are the ones that we follow (as flufy as they are).

At the world Latte Art championship in Germany they had ACF cups, all the same with the SCAE logo on them. Nice cups too but I dont know what cups will be used in Australia though.

Maybe try leaving a note on:
    https://www.aasca.com/contact-us/

Let us know what you find.

Would jam jars work? I dont think it matters what the canvas is, its the same for everyone and as long as you know what you need to practise on then the playfield is level.

I think competitors can get a free ticket in (for the day of competition only) but supporters and others just pay normal fee at the gate.

    Re: AASCA Comps - 2009-2010

    Winners are grinners.

Fiefy won the Barista comp and came second in the Latte Art.
Jonny won the cupping and won the Latte art (on a count-back).

It was a great couple of days of competition, sorry I dont have more photos to share but I spent most of the time actually watching the comps and not taking pictures (which will make sense to anyone that has watched an event through a view finder).
    ;)

There was a huge amount of entries and some great performances which is a great sign for the coffee scene in SA.

    Re: AASCA Comps - 2009-2010

    My report on yesterday.

I didnt get alot of pictures, sorry, and I will post these later at some time.

First off I would like to to thank all of the guys involved with yesterday (you know who you are) it is really hard to name them all, because I would likely forget someone, and everyone made me feel very welcome. :) It really is a absolute pleasure helping you out, making your day hopefully a little bit easier.

I was assigned to help out make the brews for the cupping, and then given the wonderful task of setting it all out and making it ready for the comp. (even including some different brews for the tasters!)

Bruno, thank you for having faith in me for making sure that it ran smooth. 8-) And my wonderful assistants, after a small hiccup, their help was fantastic.

I also had fun on the cart at the front of the entrance, with Martymonster ;D We make not a bad team, and I got to work on some of my Latte art techniques (even if Im not that good) and I impressed quite a few people standing there waiting!!!

Congratulations to Will, Kirby and Charles, loved our little chats in the back room and thanks for answering my questions about all things coffee. You guys rock...hard.

Congrats also to Aaron, Remy and Hamish on the cupping, and yes I DID make it hard in the final. :D ;D :P

I had an absolute ball, and have informed Ross that I am available for any volunteering that AASCAA require, including next year at the show again.

Again thanks, you made this humble home roaster/coffee lover a little bit more confident with what I do. :)

    -Linda

    Re: AASCA Comps - 2009-2010

Ive just walked in from the show today and I heard more than a couple of times today "Gee Linda was great yesterday"... so you certainly made an impact on the other AASCA. people too (well done on the cupping Linda!)

The efforts and time that make these events run so seemlessly are totally done by unpaid professionals that do this for the sheer love of coffee and to better the industry...and they all did another amazing job today.

Today was the Barista comp. *12 entries but a couple had to pull-out this morning so then there were 10.

Some amazing creations in the sig drinks, some great art on the capps and I think every pour I saw today looked excellent. *

and as an added bonus we even got a demo from the new Vic latte art champ, Will Priestley inbetween rounds with a 7 leaf and 3 leaf tulip in one cup and a quad rosetta in the other!

So anyway, after a day of competition and a bit of judge deliberation backstage the placings in the 2010 Victorian Barista Championship were:

    1st Caleb Podhaczkty
    2nd Kris Wood
    3rd Talor Browne

Well done to all. *All three perfomances (and some others too) were excellent and Im sure it was a very tough job for the judges.

    Next event is NSW

    Gday Linda,

It was a fantastic day on Saturday.

Really enjoyed working with you on the cart. Yeah, I think we did pretty well as a team.

Great to have people like yourself involved in coffee.

Look forward to next years event, and teaming up again.

Strange, I didnt see any mainstream press about the comps this year...these crazy victorians are too obsessed with footy.

I mean...who would put a footy match *before* going to the comps?
