Re: When P.C. Goes Too Far

PCness is a hard one. My age of reason years were in the 70s when all manner of racist jokes were told with impunity. I went to school with aborigines and blatant racism towards them was not only acceptable, it was expected. I had to do it to maintain face with my white mates though I honestly couldnt see why I was better than them. I was astounded to learn that the 1967 referendum was to recognise them as Australian citizens FFS.

Im glad that is one area where PCness has made a change.

I now notice it is swinging a little too far the other way and people are finding excuses to take offence. If anyone watched tonights episode of Hungry Beast on ABC1, the show was about the working of the outrage crowd (such as that spawned by the recent Hey Hey Black Faces brouhaha).

The show tends to ask questions and raises alternate viewpoints rather than take a stance but not entirely impartial. A very original, *thought provoking and clever show and can almost be described as a serious Chasers with some comdey but no larrikinism.

Sheesh..now look what you made me do Tepin *;) I do go on, dont I?

    I had a laugh

It was mentioned to me the other day that were no longer allowed to use the work blackboard or whiteboard too?!?!?

I guess were lucky here in OZ that these terms have a "proper" meaning and no underlying hidden message regarding a person color.

    God bless Australia! 8-)

It came up in conversation the other day because i write orders straight onto the stainless couter top with a white(?)board marker.

Im also offended by "White King" bleach. I dont see why a White King is something I want my laundry associated with. The term is a throw back to a time when white people considered themselves rulers over other races. As a Republican and a proud proponent of a multiracial society I think "White King" should take a serious look at changing their brand.

Not to mention the chauvanistic and imperialistic implications of "King" ;)

It should be re-branded as "Neutral Entity"

At the pre-school where my friends daughter goes they sing Bah Bah Rainbow Sheep. I dont know about you but Ive never seen a rainbow coloured sheep before in my life.

I cant see how the original song is at all racist but why not just not sing it at all?

We have ways of making you become a non entity - join the masses (or does that refer to church :-/) in which case, join the multitude of persons of various racial and political backgrounds acting in a harmonious manner so as not to offend any other group of persons or person (or non - persons) etc etc etc etc etc etc :-/

Re: When P.C. Goes Too Far

PC correctness and being gob smacked (pun there for some)

At a one on one meeting with the TERRITORY Manager (Repeat TERRITORY Manager) I chose to say nothing and walk away fuming.

I make no apologies for my rant on PC in this topic..

It was made clear to me that he was the TERRITORY Manager and that I had a specific role and was not to step outside my station... After a few terse words and discussion; I was again reminded that he was the TERRITORY Manager.

(I think he felt threatened that I was more qualified, more experienced, had a deeper understanding of all the clients and out side fo work am still active in health care in teh area of standards and published papers etc.. Yet have chosen to go back into an opperational role).

I was accused of having a conflict of interest and reminded that Australians are their own worse enemies in the workforce; as they try to do to much for their customers and need to remain focused on their explicit role and station. And that support people should let those best qualified to manage customer concerns - just focus on the equipment... Thats what your paid for!

    I was absolutely blown away..

1: We learnt a lot of lessons in the WW1 as to what happens when you follow people of Station and Breading - WITH NO SKILLS... :o

2: Australians (from all over the world etc) have forged ahead because we often do act outside the STATED roles given.

3: Reviews of the top performing companies often credit the fact to front line staff taking the initiative or been given the authority to respond to clients needs rather that passing the buck.

I questioned some issues of communication as I had previously received an e-mail demanding to be keep in the loop on all matter in my area.

I was advised that it still stood... I asked why I and others did not receive and communications at all and that it was not a good image when we rocked up on site and have to wing it when we find that he is or has just been on site.. Makes us look like we dont communicate ::)

I was advised to respond with "No Comment"or "I am not at liberty to comment, I am here to fix the equipment"... :P

Should I have performed a little curtsy and responded with YES Governor !

    OR

Told the Pommy git where to get off.

Either way a code of conduct and PC would have been breached..

Instead I am left to dump on CS... SORRY.. :-*

PS. dump on CS not to be taken literally

Hey dump away, isnt that also what CS is all about.
I can understand your situation especially when being in charge of an area/function but having the authority of the role taken away by those in charge who have no expertise in my area.
    Very frustrating at times!

Re: When P.C. Goes Too Far

    Hi AM,

As far as Im concerned, being told to "Butt out" can be turned to advantage.

I just tell the truth and then go by the stated policy on complaints:

"I dont know, the twits dont talk to me either. Heres their supervisors number, feel free to complain--its enshrined in our company policy."

And anyone who wants to "micro-manage" can easily be snowed under by seeking written advice on even the smallest matters. Get 4 or 5 staff doing it and the managers soon crack and go on stress leave.

    Been there, done that.

    Greg

Sometimes PC is fun--its so easy to ridicule.

My advice to you is to NEVER, and I mean EVER get a job in the Queensland State Government.

I did, have the same attitude as you, and got told that I would never make it in to a management role because I couldnt tow the line...
