Hamilton Good Food Week - Sunday 15th Nov.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Ok all you Novacastrians...and anyone else who wants to come up to Hamilton...

Were planning on being at Hamilton on Sunday as we head back from Sydney to Wee Waa.

I had heard on the grape er...beanvine that the Hamilton Long Lunch was happening down Beaumont street and there is apparently some sort of a barista competition for the locals and its being judged by Saxon Wright.

Any one else care to join us for a quickie Snob get together, or should I just bring my own friends and well have our own party? (well, I already will be bringing my own friends so thats that part solved. :D)

I would have love to be there, Scoots, but Ill be madly tap dancing away at my Concert rehearsals on Sunday, damnit!

Have a lovely time - once again, I manage to miss you. Still Ive pre-booked the Gold Coast Nationals and definitely catch up with you then, by hook or by crook!!! Dont forget Ive got a spare bed for you, if you need it.

    Cheers

Ive got the day off work and am heading into town - hope to see a few snobs errr.... snobbin about! I really want to see what this competition side of things is like too, so I will be there (possibly taking notes like the nerdling that I am) and am definately up for a meet up over a cuppa.

Hoyks...oh bugger...I was hoping youd be there! Ah well, like you said...QLD 2010...Ill be sure to confirm the bed booking at a later date! ;)

Mel...I have absolutely no idea where the barista comp is being held...Were coming back up from Sydney so I daresay well be up there by 10am with any luck.

Maybe the comp venue would be a good spot to meet up?

Im hoping to get there at some stage for a while.

What looks like the official site (http://www.hamiltontown.com/gfw/baristacompetition.php) isnt particularly specific with details - sometime on 15th, somewhere in Hamilton. *You need to look at the entry form to find 10am to 4pm, maybe the local rags this week will have more clues.

Looked through my trusty copy of The Post and found nothing. Web-hunting revealled at least 2 websites that mistakenly advertised it as happening on the 8th (causing me to have a small aneurysm)... finally found the phone number and tried 2 call... got voicemail. I think I left the wrong number to call back though (I have issues with remembering my phone numbers, even have it my phone under the name "Ima Nidiot") so will try again later.

All the advertising is more directed to people looking to wander the streets without any time constraints or specific event in mind.

Have just organised a reconnaissance mission to beaumont st to see if there are any maps posted, will report back this afternoon.

Im back - saw no signs or maps/event timetables. There was a warning for the street being closed off, but no indication as to venues.
Thanks tyeoman for the confirmation on the date, Im sure we will find the place on the day (the smell of freshly ground coffee will probably be a tip off).

Ive volunteered to be one of the sensory judges on the day, so come and say hi! Ill be the tallest one, most likely. Youll also see my wife (Lisa, long straight brown hair!) there with her dad and brother (the guy whos got the loudest laugh).

My guess is that from 9.15-5 Ill be fairly flat out, but it would be wonderful to meet you both! (and anyone else who makes it!)

Well, thats relative! I think that Beaumont st is pretty big and long with lots of shops and cafes and back alleys with more cafes...I found an alley that had about 7 cafes down it there! *:o But of course, I come from a place where you can walk the main shopping block in about two minutes! *;D

CoffeeHorse...where did they tell you to go on Sunday? Surely you guys must have been given a venue to go to??

Oh and thanks for reporting in Corporal Coffee...job well done there! ;)

The festival will be run on Beaumont Street between Donald and Tudor Street, we are getting closer to a pinpoint location :)

Are these things ever held out doors? Cause there is bit of an open space/piazza (?) next to Kos cakes that I thought looked capable of holding a crowd...

Hey Mel, you calling Scoots a bike??? :o She can be a nasty wench if shes riled up!

    ;D ;D ;D

Reminds me about a story about when I met Pete - hed just moved to Townsville and also bought a car. So one of his workmates reckoned hed got a new home, a new car and a new bike all in the same week. Just quietly, he couldnt sit down for a week! ;)

Man, I wish I could be there for this - my dance rehearsal doesnt start until 2.30pm at Broadmeadow, but I think Id freak the crowds out if I turned up with ultra red lips, two tons of spac filla on my face, fishnet stockings and in one of my costumes! Actually, come to think of it, theyll just think Ive migrated from Islington! :D

Have a great time and may the best Baristress win!

Ah well... I think I got there a bit late to see Scoots and I dont think I saw anybody holding a teacup.

It was 1pm by the time I got there, I must have walked past the workstations twice before I worked out where it was - their lunch break *::)

Saw the guy from Eurobar compete - not ideal conditions, it looked hot and breezy out there in the middle of the road. *Waiting for the next competitor and a Brazilian/Congo band started up a few meters away so things appeared to be put on hold. *Came back half an hour later and they were still banging away, the barista and judges were still sitting there waiting - I gave up *:(

Re: Hamilton Good Food Week - Sunday 15th Nov.

Hi guys...finally home and back on line here...phew what a trip! Had car trouble thrown in with the mix but we made it home safe.

I was there in time to see the 3rd competitor for the day, say a quick gday to Yeeza (sorry that I didnt get to see you again!), grab a coffee from Eurobar and then we had to really get motoring as wed not got out of Sydney as early as I would have liked. And as it was, we were held up not an hour up the road as the car failed to proceed...

Great news on the winner for the day! Yes, I thought that the conditions were pretty ordinary for the competitors. Felt for the girl competitor we watched as whilst her shot was pouring for one set of her drinks and she was busy preping for something else, the darn wind was actually blowing the shots out of the cups! Anyway, I guess its all part of the competition but really, I thought that a little more thought could have gone into placement of the coffee machines too. (It did seem like a tough venue being out in the middle of the street!)

Does anyone know how many competitors there were all up?

Re: Hamilton Good Food Week - Sunday 15th Nov.

Hey guys, I must have missed all of you! I arrived just as the dude from Eurobar was finishing, went down to rolladoor to get an ice coffee while the next person was setting up.
Seemed to make it back just in time for Emma from a place called sniddys. Ive actually eaten there (they specialise in schnitzel... mm) but didnt have a coffee cause i figured there was no way a snitchel hut would have good coffee. Well heres the girl competing! She got a bit flustered, and I felt bad for her. Def. not ideal conditions.
Then I wandered about for a bit, came back just in time for some dude from IIIbean, who was all on that sh*t. Just seemed to handle it a bit better.
Then the theatre restaurant seemed to be doing some "comedy" sketch about not being able to make coffee and I decided to head on for the day (had some birthday shopping to do for the boy while I had an arvo off).
So I guess they came back with more competitors after that? Good to here it was a snob triumph! Well done Tweeek.
Sad I missed you guys but I will be back next year - def. thinkin about competing now! Looked like lots of fun!

Re: Hamilton Good Food Week - Sunday 15th Nov.

congrats Tweeek first of all - all the judges were in agreement that the best person on the day won! if you want more debrief than you got, feel free to PM me (think youve got my sheets anyhow).

as the inaugural comp, there were some mistakes which more seasoned (salt? pepper?) competitors wouldve avoided (most people hadnt brought the right size cups, few people preheated them on the machine, and only Seamus purged his grinder (inc. throat) between shots, but even those who didnt score well had a heap of potential.

unfortunately due to judging commitments the only people I got to talk to were Yeeza, Framey and tyeoman, but it was really good to see you all there. congrats framey - I enjoyed the shots I had of your coffee.

There were actually 3 dudes from Eurobar, but IIRC Emma was the last competitor and had only registered 10 mins before - so we were all very impressed by how well she scored considering!

The event organisers also werent rubbish, wanted feedback (which we gave) and wanted to make the event get bigger and better each year.

So Ill see you next year...!

Thanks coffeehorse and thanks to all the judges and the organisers. I got some very helpful feedback and I had a lot of fun and look forward to competing again, hopefully having incorporated some of the feedback. I would certainly encourage anyone who is thinking about it to have a dig next year.

I havent seen the judging sheets yet but thanks very much for the offer and if I have any questions once I have, I will get in touch.

    Thanks again to everyone.

Congrats tweeek, pleasure to tech judge you on the day. Great day, awesome organisation, a shout out to the Newie crew getting that sussed. I thought I had the judges sheets sitting next to me here, but Ill get Sax to get them out to everyone.

Again, and qs shoot us an email Seamus.

Congrats to all the other competitors too, and definitely hope to see you all there next year. Its a great base to start a epic coffee standards hitting the Newcastle region. Probably the most organised regional comp Ive even attended.
