Will rats eat green coffee beans?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all

Ill be moving my roaster and green bean collection (~ 100 kg) to a farm out west.
Does anyone know from experience if rats/mice will nibble the green beans?
I store the beans currently in their cloth bags in an open mesh plastic tub so the beans stay dry and dont get mouldy. I presume rats might well chew holes in the cloth to taste whats inside. Id hate to come back and find all my beans spilled out. Would they also nibble to green beans?

You will have to find another storage soution.

You could try something like perforated stell drums or the like :-?

Funny you should ask this. I have a pet rat who I fed a green bean to yesterday. Their teeth grow constantly and they need something hard to chew on, so I figured he might go for the green beans. Sure enough, he ate the whole thing; I only gave him one.

I thought theres no way hes going to sleep now....well, after a couple of minutes buzzing around, he slept as per usual.

In short, rats will eat them, keep them out of vermins reach.

    Oh :-(

Looks like I will have to find or build a wire cage with lid that the plastic trays of beans can be placed into. I had tried to look up if rats ate such beans on Google but all I got was links to experiments on rats like these:

The effects of a water-soluble green coffee bean extract (GCE) on blood pressure were investigated using spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). ...

The effect of green coffee bean extract (GCBE) on fat accumulation and body weight in ..... have a hypotensive effect in spontaneously hypertensive rats. ...

Green coffee beans are rich in chlorogenic acid and its related compounds that ..... food component increases endurance performance in rats and athletes. ...

Coffee bean extract (CBE) was prepared from raw green coffee beans and contained 10.0% caffeine and 27.0% chlorogenic acid. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were ...

Green coffee bean is rich in chlorogenic acid and its related compounds. ... and Lindgren found that caffeine promotes lipolysis in rat adipocytes [5]. ...

Ill have to delay moving the roaster to the country for a while.
    Thanks for your advice.

Shoot / Drown and bets of all 240 volt ... A high wattage lamp (500W) and a special setup in the rafters... They would travel along and when the light goes on.. Ya would put another mark on the score board..

Just like wild pigs and top knot pigions etc... If they have been into good grain etc they all make great eating.. Rats are not bad... Guinie pigs are better :D

Saw the subject heading and thought it was in reference to Nescrape green blend drinkers.

Hi Mike - from my experience Id have to say no - over the past three years Ive had around a ton at any time in hessian (parchment not green) and they dont seem to be very interested in it at all - maybe one or two exploratory nibbles. A good baiting program (Racumin doesnt cause secondary poisoning) to break the breeding cycle and maybe a python will help.

I guess it is like many things... Depends on what ya other options are ?

1: Drought and or lack of other food

    2: Mice plague etc

May not be their first choice over other quality grains... But They can and do eat every thing...

The rats at our place only eat the bags, they leave the beans.
