    Reg Barber Rippled tampers.

    Hi all lets get some info on the reg barber rippled tampers?????


    Can you notice a distinct difference in flavour from a standard flat RB tamper to the Rippled RB tamper???


    Cant wait to see the results from this

    Looks nice but I doubt you would be able to taste any difference, could have some improvements in consistency (stretching it a bit I think). Has been around for a while without creating much excitement that I have seen. Wouldnt complain if someone gave me one to try though. ;D

    Apparently the ripples are scientificly prooven to make the coffee sweeter i am currently using espro flat, RB flat and RB rippled and im yet to notice any taste difference wat so ever

    Love the look of RBs, but as for the ripples - it looks very interesting but imho, dun think it works! I think the concept is that there is more contact surface on the surface of the puck, hence more flavoursome coffee, but:

    1) Newsflash - espresso is extracted via pressure! :o ;) So whether youve got ripples or a flat surface, water gets pushed downwards thru the entire puck, extracting from every bit of coffee that is in there. So it doesnt matter how you shape the surface.

    2) If you try to maintain the ripple shape while extracting, you cannot overfill your basket, otherwise the ripple gets crushed by your shower screen anyway when you put the group handle in - hence the problem of having to underdose to maintain the ripples - not my preference to be honest.

    I have always been curious about this - how well do the ripples hold up against the pressure - does the 9 bar pressure crush it?

    To be perfectly honest, if I were to buy a RB, I would get the good old flat or convex base.

    I had a laugh :D Did the do sugers analysis on shots pulled with and without the rippled tamper?

    First I have heard of that claim. Doesnt sound right to me, why sweeter?

    It is my understanding that the ripples are designed to increase the surface area of the puck. Making it easier and quicker for the water to move into the coffee.

    I just hoped it would help to make a more even extraction.

    Now, thats interesting... 8-)

    Ive found after heaps of experimenting (quite a while ago), that slightly underdosing and adjusting the grind to compensate, produces espresso that is noticeably sweeter - especially the crema. Perhaps it is this that is actually responsible for the improved sweetness, not the ripples themselves per sť but the secondary effect.... ::)

    Its interesting that you should mention this Mal, but I have long suscribed to your school of thought re: under dose/finer grind. Its just a taste preference I suppose... Kinda like writing my reply up here as opposed to below because I choose to use an iPhone and choose to not know how to drive the @:)& thing!
