    Brisbane - Cupping workshop?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi fellow Brisbanites, I was wondering if there was someone in our midst that would be willing to lead/educate a cupping workshop, and whether there was any interest in such a beast. I admit to this being totally selfish, as this is an area I am sadly very lacking, *[smiley=embarassed.gif] and in which I would like to get some experience.

I would be willing to host the workshop at my place in Ormiston, (numbers permitting), and do all the admin logistics etc, but I require mentoring and someone with some credentials to lead the workshop and provide advice.

My thoughts are that we organise for the attendees to also provide the selection of the roasted beans for cupping.

Is this a good idea? is it of interest to anyone? is there someone who could lead & mentor? has it been tried before?

    Your views please

    Graham

Di Bella Coffee and Veneziano Caffe have run some good ones...

The Veneziano Caffe one ran over 6 or 8 weeks and was a great exposure to many things coffee.

As to what your suggesting... It comes down to what your expecting / assuming will be the outcome.

I have done both and still consider my self to be a nube.. My palate and nose have been abused over many years.... Thus I can say what I like.. But dont try to get me to say what side of teh mountain or at what hight the beans were grown... I cheat and look on the bag and trust the bean supplier is not pulling a swiftly.

A good training session means Lots of hardware... Lots of beans, Charts to help explain, A Special kits of all the aromas to assist with people being able to accurately identify and compare noses etc.

Then ya need to do it across a wide selection to get a real feel for it.

A simple home run cupping session can be done by any number of CSér in Brisbane... But you could end up thinking you have it all... When there is much more to it..

It is not a numbers thing and you need lots of exposure to tune your palate correctly..

Suggest you make some noise with some of teh Sponsors here in Brisbane and see what happens...

    Good points AM,

I suppose my objective is not so much to acquire an overnight palate, but to understand the process and methodology, learn some tricks of the trade and get some hands on experience, which can then be used to practise with individually in order to build of a level of competency.

I know there is information out there on how to cup, but Im more of a kinesthetic style learner so hands-on would be good.

I think its a great idea. I did a 2 cupping course in Bangkok (after the riots *;D) and it was a great experience. There is a lot to learn and after that its up to you...as my teacher said...just keep cupping!...I also still need to cheat and look at the label though...I had a laugh,

    So true..

Thus get a good grounding and for that I am going to say Sponsors to start with..

Peter and Anne have both moved on and there experience and understanding of the whole process from the Plantation to the end product was a great loss to Brisbane ;)

Peter is still around and may still be interested... Suggest some one follow up with him..

Just do a search on WolffRoasters in Brisbane.. I am sure a fes CSér would be interested in tagging along.. Might depend on Time frames and any potential costs ???

Ahhhh that could be a bit of a show stopper *[smiley=smiley.gif]

Mind you I have run plenty of remote workshops via internet linkups, we could still give you call *[smiley=wink.gif]

Blackberries are soft and squishy and nuts are nuts - Right ?

Ya... Dont ya love it when some one look at you and rattles off at least 6 different flavours, 4 aromas and the changes as the oils age in ya mouth..

I look back and say... Yep.. Smells just like the fuel soaked dirt out the back of burk and sure does have a that boot leather tartness ;D

Supreme Roasters has had first hand experience with my interpretations and descriptors... However they was a special of his that took me back to a lunch time some 25years ago; on a farm in Sicily... The smell and flavours just took me straight to the place and the day.. It was great.....

How was teh coffee... Err not bad but the emotional hit was worth more... A great coffee it was :)

    Re: Brisbane - Cupping workshop?

If as is being indicated by AM that cupping can become bigger than Ben Hur, We could possibly narrow the scope of the workshop and address specific aspects, and conduct a progressive series of sessions

    Just an idea [smiley=undecided.gif]
