    Anthony,

Is it definitely the steam wand which is venting, or is it the safety valve thinggy? On the Europiccola (old, old model) steam venting from the safety valve indicates the boiler is at brewing temp (but then youre supposed to switch the heating element to low - which stops the venting - and pull the shot).

If in fact your friend has been pulling shots with the steam wand open, I dare say the seals would be in good condition because theyll not have been put under much pressure.

Just to clarify, are we talking about a machine that looks like the photo below?

In case its of use for your price negotiations: I saw a new LaPavoni Professional (Chrome) in a shop window today for $1000. I think this model has twice the boiler capacity of the Europiccola.

The newer Silvias have a nominal 100 degree C thermostat, which is 10 degrees cooler than the old one.

There were complaints the hotter thermostats were producing too much steam!

It should be a simple matter to remove the two holding screws, remove the old thermostat and replace it with a cooler new one.

    Thanks for the advice ...
And the Pavoni model Im talking about is only 8-cup capacity, so it cant be the Professional, but it has a pressure gauge on top of the glass column, so it shouldnt be the Euro model .. maybe its a customised hybrid, but since my friends late husband bought it, she doesnt really know. And she hates using it and never will .....

Re the Silvia thermostats: Ive been told by my local Rancilio repairer that the thermostats only cost a few dollars; if the replacement procedure is as simple as Robusto says, it could be an easy and affordable mod.

Hmmm. . . Does it have a single button or double button? I believe the Professional has a single and the Europiccola a double. As you say, only the euro is 8-cup capacity. My experience is that the euro will only just do 4 espressos (and steam about 100ml of milk). I cant imagine it really being able to make more than 6 short blacks without a boiler refill.
