    Do you drink the rocks??

    I am curious what others do when you accidentally grind up a rock in the coffee beans. After roasting some Yemen and also some Ethiopian Harrar, I have pulled out quite a few small stones pre roast and post roast but obviously missed some as a couple of times I have heard and seen one go through the grinder.

    You can see the white tinged grounds in the basket. Not one to waste good coffee, I have made my coffee as per usual and drank it with ground rock.

    Am I the only one?

    Nasty for grinders :o If you score a bit of granite or a harder rock you could kill a set of burrs.

    I pre and post roast sieve Yemen, the Harrar seems to be not to bad so just post sieve. Only found small grains of sand so far so maybe I have just been lucky.

    Have never had the experience Mum, my cooling screen has a mesh large enough to allow small rocks to pass through and still retain the roasted beans, of course any rocks the size of a coffee bean or larger would stand out like a pimple on a pumpkin. :)

    I found a small piece of gravel in a bag of Ethiopian Harrar Blue Horse, about half the size of a coffee bean. I was a bit shocked as I had heard stories of stones destroying grinder burrs. I tried bitting it to see how hard it was and it crushed quite easily. I dont think it would have been anything to worry about but still I think I will be checking for stones in all my beans in future.

    I check religiously before roasting, whilst cooling and as I put it into the grinder but I have so far missed 2. Both times it has been in a bean that I really love and didnt want to waste the shot and thankfully were only soft sandstone.

    Last time I roasted Yemen, I pulled out about 6 rocks in one roast. (600gm)

    So I guess I am the only one this has happened to. :-?

    No...

    Some dont care ;D Some can not see them 8-) and some of us; have systems to try to keep the bloody things out of teh grinders ;)

    I use magnetic tape in the bottom of the grinder around the neck and in the finger guard..

    But it focuses only on metal based stuff... Ceramics and no ferrous stuff can still cause a mess to the grinder...

    I had a couple go through but I drank the coffee no problems. It would stay in the PF so the coffee will not be affected unless you have excellent taste buds you probably will not notice. :)

    I had never heard of (or thought about for that matter) rocks in the beans. I had an issue a few days ago, heard something go crunch halfway through a grind and the shot choked, then the following 2 shots way overextracted after going a turn or two coarser on the grind so went a bit coarser again. from then on its been fine again. No surprise having to make small grinder adjustments from shot to shot, but I hadnt experienced good (in the morning) to choke (in the afternoon) without any other differences before...
    now wondering if it might have been a rock that caused the crunch but dunno why it would affect the shots like that???

    i have found a few post roasting, now i always have a look in the green beans and then the cooled beans....

    the brother in law spotted a big bit of concrete looking stuff in there one day when i was showing him some green, was about the size of my pinky finger nail !!!

    Also had 2 "rock" experiences last weekend. This week I have constructed a de-stoner and it will become standard practice from now on after every roast. The KKTO to look after the small stuff through the colander and the de-stoner to look after the larger stuff. Macca doesnt seem to appreciate a hard rock diet :(

    Trick 1: Use a magnetic tape and add to teh inside of the throat, of the bean hopper...

    Trick 2: Does not catch non metallic/ferious based items

    I picked out a corn kernel as I was filling the Gene the other day. I nearly left it; considering how many use a corn popper to roast beans it would have made a nice touch.

    I have a sieve but it is a bit coarse and quite a few beans end up through it. I sieved my beans pre roast this time and was shocked at how many tiny rocks there were.

    I am yet to find anything metal though or corn kernels. I probably would have roasted the corn kernel just to see how far into the roast it would pop. :D

    I am definately going to take AMs advice and put some magnetic tape in the grinder.
