    Percolator for a party

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Im having my engagement party on the weekend, YAY! ;D

To cater for an expected rush on coffees at the end of the night, were anticipating hiring a big percolator pot and filling it up with some freshly roasted coffee (Chris secret blend). Im too damn lazy to spend my own party manning the espresso machine...

Any tips on getting the best out of a big percolator? eg, amount of ground coffee per litre of water, best grind, etc?

Ill probably roast on Thursday so the beans will be nice and fresh by Saturday night. Will grind just before brewing if I can.

    cheers

You do realize that a percolator is the absolute worst way to brew coffee right?

Youd be much better off making up several pots in a drip brewer and putting them in an air pot.

Another alternative would be to make up a batch of CP and have the percolator there just for its hot water to make a cuppa with. :)

If you do insist on using a percolator use a pretty coarse grind. Coarser than for a drip brew. Probably somewhere around the grind used for a french press pot.

For a mix ratio for strong coffee somewhere around a 6:1 water:coffee should work.

Its all a matter of what I can get my hands on... cheaply and quickly... ;)
dont have a drip brewer. dont even know what an air pot is... percolators can be rented. unless I can get a few huge plungers for under $50, some time before the weekend.

There will be about 100 people there, not all will have coffees of course...

6:1 - Im guessing thats by volume? by weight that seems pretty strong... (~150g/litre)

    dont have a drip brewer.
Im sure Ive seen drip coffee makers at Target and KMart in the $25-30 range. Couple of them and your set.
I agree I would rather drink drip that than perc coffee if thats all thats on offer.

Hope it all goes off well.

Anyway...everyone should be should be drinking BEER and WINE and Vodka Cruisers and other such such libations at your engagment, not COFFEE ;D ;)

The busy coffee shops and even convience stores around here brew the coffee into what around here is called an air pot. Its a big thermos with any of several different types of pumping mechanism on top that lets you dispense the coffee into your cup.

They arent heated so youre not burning the coffee, just retaining its heat.

They used to be extremely popular for home use back in the 70s but then virtually dissapeared from the market and the only place you see them anymore around here is in stores using them to serve hot drinks.

Round abouts here most party supply and resturant rental joints know what they are and have them available.

All you need is a well insulated container rated for hot liquids from which the coffee can be dispensed with-out opening the container. Either with a pump from the top or a regular spigot from the bottom.

The trick is to brew the coffee and then immediately remove it from the heat.

And yes, the 6:1 is by Volume, not weight. :) Depending on the coffee that might be a bit too strong for some. Remember, a percolator will accent the acids and bitter flavors. Usually very drastically. Sometimes so much so that you wont recognize as the same bean you just made an espresso from. :o Ugh!

I have this Cona kitchen-model vacpot from the 60s: size D. It refuses to make less than a litre+ of coffee at a time. The serving temp is higher than the brewing temp so the coffee is as hot as the percolated stuff but sweet and silky. Imagine having two of these with a double Cona warming plate and masses of , say, PNG Sihereni. (I like the clean, bright-tasting stuff for vacpot).

A bit hard to pull it all together by the weekend, but worth a thought for the next big occasion.

    Anyway, have a great party!

Oh, that will be happening too! 8-) Dan Murphys and Angoves have had a pounding...

Hopefully by the end of the night noone will remember the coffee anyway.

I found that if you have the alcoholic squishy machine... no-one cares about the lack of coffee!!

I heartily recommend the Pina Colada
