    Beans impact on espresso length

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Quick question, I have bought the variety (4) pack of roasted beans from Beanbay. Made an Ethiopian bean espresso which was great, 25 sec, perfect pour, etc.. Have tried both the PNG and Sumatran beans and these poured in 15 secs. They both still tasted ok, not great. I had the same grind, dose, tap, tamp pressure. Do beans make a 10 sec difference to the pour? Should I be changing the grind for different beans? I thought the prep was very similar, obviously not identical.

    Cheers
    Anthony

Most likely you will have to, you may find two beans that are very similar though.

Thats the aim, have everything the same and only adjust the grind to get the results you want.

the ethiopian needs a coarser grind* :)
I think the experienced can get the grind right in 2 or 3 trys but we mortals may take longer.
I also have a pack so I looked for the reviews 8-)

    Thanks guys, maketh sense.

Think my ethiopian was spot on grind then, my other beans then need a finer grind (currently at 15 secs).

    Thanks heaps :)

Yeah - I had the same thing last night.
Finished off my Bali and cracked open some Ethiopian Gambella and ended up needing a 6 click adjustment coarser before getting a good pour.

Probably the biggest change I have had between beans.

I find that there is only a small variation needed in grinder setting from bean to bean. On my Rocky most beans grind at 8 for the double basket and 7 for the single. A short pour is the sign to go a click finer on the grinder. That one click can make a big difference in the length and quality of the pour. I occasionally need a two click variation, but that is rare. I actually find my biggest challenge is consistency in the tamp & dose. A small variation makes a lot of difference. Then there is the temperature difference from shot to shot as the machine gets hotter. Hey this is complicated isnt it!
