What kind of Coffee is free at your office?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hello all! Stole this topic from alt.coffee but thought it might be a good way for a newbie to get a conversation going ... So, what sort of coffee is available free at your workplace?

We have some awful instant rubbish, Moccona Gold and Dowe and Egberts is the choice I think.

luckily we have a canteen with an espresso machine and a PBTC who has
half a clue. Its not free, but its cheap. When the previous catering company was in charge their coffee was awful, so I used to bring in my own coffee and use a plunger.

    Hi Hazchem,

    Welcome to CS.
Well free at our office depends, see I have to do a lot of work at customers sites, so mostly they have have some kind of instant, ::), so I usually take some of my own and use my plunger mug.

Our head office, or base, the free coffee provided by the company is both instant, (was once Nescafe Gold, have no idea now as I never drink it), and real beans of which the last lot were from a specialty roaster in Hobart, and they were nice, but the spresso machine has been broken for a while now :(.
Apart from that the other free coffee is my home roasted beans, sometimes brewed in an old filter machine, usually just plunger lately ;)

    Regards
    Bullitt

Blend 43 or nescafe Decaf... I drink tea at work.

The canteen got an espresso machine a while ago but I havent been brave enough to try their skills (and you have to pay for it). Piazza DOro beans IIRC?

None of the coffee at work is free, our employer wont stump up, so our social club pays for it ::)
It mainly consists of the good old 43, or someone will get the good stuff and get Mocona :P.
If I want a decent cup, Ill walk over the road to Michels :)

Same at my work - our social club pays for our Blend 43 and Decaf.
We also have a Lavazza vending machine, which I thought wasnt too bad (until I started roasting myself) [smiley=embarassed.gif]
During business hours, I stick to tea.

Our office has a Saeco Royal using Rio Coffees Crema blend (but Ive just convinced them to switch to Rios East Timorese Fair Trade). A lot of my commercial clients have similar setups, but if Im in town Ill just take them to a good coffee bar.

We have absolutely nothing free! Our social club (which has 000s in the bank mind you)wont even pay for milk for those who bring in their own coffee/tea. Still thats what you get when you are employed by the Queensland Government. Our section anyway. We do have a hot water urn though. Gotta be thankful for that :o

So of course I bring in a plunger and use my (excess/old) roasted beans and use that..... Good to try something different I suppose. :-*

Re: What kind of Coffee is free at your office?

    Wow..

Im really shocked to hear how many employers dont provide even instant coffee for free!

Currently Im lucky enough to work from home, which is part of the reason I was able to convince myself spending around 1000 bucks on a coffee setup and training is/was OK. (This was a big jump considering my previous setup consisted of a KRUPS grinder and DeLonghi Espresso machine that had both been received as gifts).

My last employer was a pretty large office -- I would hazard a guess at 150-250 people maybe -- Its so hard to tell in those big offices. We had a "super auto", i think they are called. It took Vittoria whole beans and whatever milk people dumped from the fridge into the bucket in the refridgerated compartment in the machine.

Id rate the machine somewhere in between instant and typical café coffee. It probably wasnt maintained and tuned well to get decent shots of espresso and from my experience many of those machines dont do too well with milk texturing either, but it was well appreciated by many.

The fact you got what your average joe considers "half-decent" coffee for free without having to get gouged by the café downstairs for $3.00 a pop for a small, was pretty good.

To me, back in those days, it was nice to be able to caffeinate myself and get productive when I was feeling sluggish without spending heaps on it.

I feel sorry for all of those of you who dont even get instant for free at work :( -- If I was in that situation I would probably be talking to HR or my manager or both.

To me that says "we dont really care about you at all"... but then.. every place Ive ever worked has had coffee/tea, so maybe the paradigm I live in is a biased sample of the real world?

Id be interested to hear what their reasoning/excuse is for not providing it :)

But then.. I like to stir things up a little and make waves sometimes ... ;D

    cheers

If we were to approach our manager and ask for free coffee, wed get laughed out of the office. Its hard enough for us to get a pen to use, let alone a luxury item like a coffee ;).
I know exactly what their reasoning is behind not providing us with the coffee, $$$.
But then again, if they did stump up and give us free coffee, it would most likely be international roast, and then Id know that my boss really didnt care about me ;D.

Nuffins for free seemingly, *:-[ our office of 9 bods chuck in a few goldies each payday to fund purchase of milk and gross instant (Nescafe Gold). For clients we up the stakes and use plunger coffee and I have weasled my way into buying the coffee so at least we get a halfway decent blend (Grinders Espresso or Vittoria Bar Blend)

We have however a fabulous tea culture, involving a big pot and lots of tres classy antique cups, saucers and fancy spoons. All staff had to acquire their own cups, with the stipulation they were vintage, fine china and cheap! We have a silver tray we found at Vinnies, sugar bowl and creamer, and each person has brought in their favourite leaf tea. Each day we brew, sip and compare the flavours, now everyone thinks theyre an instant expert on the other brown beverage *::)

The teaset has been a great equaliser as everyone in the office likes tea, while the coffee tastes are wide ranging, we all decided that there were WAY too many accidents waiting to happen if we invested in an espresso machine *;D

    hi hazchem!

at work: instant, or I can nick some frozen preground stuff.

    Near work is another story!

Job 1: A new Patisserie opened across the road, they use Single Origin Coffee - they make it well too!

Job 2: Theres a cafe a few blocks away that uses campos.

    its pretty good.

Re: What kind of Coffee is free at your office?

Well Ive just hit my 1 year anniversary at my current employer. I have to admit Ive never gone looking to see if they have any form of "free" coffee on-site. Guess thats a direct response to the fact that for $3 I can head to the in-house cafe and get a much-better-than-average espresso-based coffee. Oh yeah, theyve got an electronic smart card system that means you dont fork over a cent at the time, and monthly it comes out of your pay in pre-tax dollars - same as the cafeteria. Bonus.

Ive never asked if I could take the 3-group machine for a whirl myself, as its faaaaaar too busy. Dont even know what machine it is.... but the three regular baristii all pour a mean coffee - there was a time when they had some temps in and the quality was highly variable, but they realised the folly of that.

They use Ritazza beans, and apparently go thru 4+ kg a day on an average day. Guess it shows that a reasonably big office in the middle of nowhere with nothing around has a captive market - its one of the heaviest used common areas in the place, they have lounges for informal meetings and stuff, its great.

They do have decent tea bags, not that Id ever go there..... I dont drink coffee after lunch, which is when I switch to the supplied fizzy cold beverages they have in fridges on each floor. They even have fruit juices and bottled water although they tend to run out by lunch time.

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
We have Spotless Cafe onsite - Coffee = rubbish... no passion in the making of coffee and they really dont seem to care but considering the monopoly, its no suprise. Coffee is always burnt and/\/or they overheat the milk quite often and the foam - too airy and not polished at all. Nice people working in there, just not passionate (over even half passionate) about making a great cup.....

We do get our free instant rubbish but I stay well clear of it. Im known as the coffeesnob of the joint... and I make no excuses either :-)
