Barista Basic Course Melbourne - which one?

Hi CSers I live in Far North Qld and with the limited ability up here to do a espresso course Im heading down to Melbourne in a few weeks to do an intro course.

Can anyone let me know whether they have had experience with either of the Melbourne courses listed on the Sponsor Sites - "The Espresso School" or "Coffee Academy - Melbourne"

    Thanks :-/

I did the basic course at The Espresso School with David Seng and found him to be extremely knowledgeable and it was a great introduction to the basics of making espresso and espresso-based drinks. The only downside was that I already had a bit of practice and experience, and some of the other students had absolutely no idea what coffee was prior to attending (AND one of them didnt even drink coffee) - so it was a little frustrating.

I do recommend David as a great teacher though.

Thanks Tim, that does sound a little frustrating but I suppose a little luck of the draw.

Richard i look forward to hearing your sons thoughts on his course today.

    Cheers

He said it was very cafe oriented. Commercial machines, grinders with dosers etc, dosing by sight, cleaning. Made espressos and common milk drinks. He now knows what bad coffee tastes like. Failed Latte art.
Since he booked the course hes got a real job so he was less enthusiastic. Hes on crutches after a basketball tumble and cant manage my lever machine at the moment so I dont know if hes improved. Course notes seem good.

Im thinking of doing a course for my personal benefit, and was looking at both of these as well.* My son, wholl be 17 shortly, has also expressed an interest. If hes interested in getting part-time work as a barista, is it important to have a recognised accreditation, or is it more about having the appropriate and demonstratable skills? Thanks.

Ive always wanted to go to an espresso school but have never put in the time to organise it... but ive always kept my eyes on available courses/schools that do it... what i find interesting is the cafes that offer training courses... so if i were to do a course, id do it at one of those places... Dibella in North Melbourne off a 2.5 hour session i think at $100. you can bring your own machine also... they have more advanced courses also.. .. btw, love their coffee!
