Is it just me or is McCafe still shocking....

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
So I thought I would give McCafe another chance seeing they just won some award, changed their beans, and will replace a crap coffee.

So I pull into the local McCafe (mainly because they have a kids play pen), and order a standard size cappuccino. What I get is a skyscrapper mug with coffee flavored milk. Their response was they dont have any normal size cups. Hmm.

So I tell them make it a small, and what do I get: another massive mug. At this point I gave up and left. So crap coffee (still), And worse service.

Did they buy their award or were they the only candidate?

According to their ad they now hire "baristas". But 2 coffees for the price of 1 is better than 1 crap coffee and no replacement I suppose. ;D As for as competition, they have to beat Staryucks, unGlorious, Hungry Hacks and Subway. Its something but still not the place to go to if you ask me to have something to eat with your coffee.

You can get a nationally recognised barista certificate for a half a day course and less than $100.

Not only that, these courses fail to teach consistency.
Plus over time these young ones develop habits of their own, including laziness without proffesional follow up, and that results in coffee that is variable from day to day and whoever is behind the machine.

Gary, from what Ive seen, I think that people who work at McDonalds (young or old) could never be considered lazy. ;)

I have one, and trust me you dont want me making you your coffee! ;D I never perfected heating the milk properly. In these courses as long as you pay the $80 and look like your trying, theyll give the certificate to you. They also dont spend enough time teaching the basics if you ask me. After 1 hour of basics, they start telling you how to make all the different coffees (lattes, capps, macchiatos, mochas, flat white e.t.c)* >:( After 3 hours, I still didnt know the difference in milk of a latte and cappuccino and they didnt once mention anything about a ristretto.

Are the machines still auto? From what I can tell they look like it. The "Barista" simply heats the milk.

I saw a pour blond soooo early the other day and they just let it go.

I dont expect McDonalds to make consistantly good coffee, I just wish they wouldnt lay claim to the fact that they do.

Bad coffee, and a lot of other things besides, is not about "inability" its about "dont care". If you recruit all your staff from a cohort that "doesnt care" you will never get a good product.
When you complain and get the same outcome again, you know that they just dont care. It will never change.

Trust me Den, in this neck of the woods they are lazy in the McCafe section.
In the burger section though, they do churn out burgers n chips with great consistency and enthusiasm.

I decided to go to Maccas twice in 2 weeks for a meal and coffee because i read in Beanscene about Scotties subject about Mc Donalds big apology.

Muffin not too bad. Cappuccino came to me with as much sprinkles on the saucer and on the top, froth flowing down one side of the cup handle :o
Thats lazy technique in my book.

During my meal break, evening staff started showing up in their uniform half done up and sat around the cafe section with their facebook open on their mobiles. The resulting chatter of course took over the comparative serenity of the background music.
One of them decided to take her shoe off to change the band aid on her foot next to my table. ::)

As a person who works in the hospitality industry, i promptly spoke to the manager after my meal and politely gave him my feedback of my experience.

I support the coffee culture wherever they are.
We dont expect McCafe to make leading edge beverages.
As long as they stay consistent and make a good cuppa with care, then customers have no cause for complaint.

Re: Is it just me or is McCafe still shocking....

Im personally glad they are supporting RFA. My most recent was an espressopronto small long black - from an I Spy prize. Maccas in Maylands in Perth. Was it comparable to the Sumatra Blue Batak off the stovetop espresso that gave me wings today after a night of sick kids? Not even remotely! Was it an enjoyable cup of coffee? Definitely.

Without the milk, that means the coffee was STRICTLY automatic. I guess that means it doesnt matter if the staff are lazy - only that the machine is good and the beans are good.

On a related note, is it ethical to roast coffee, sell it to a coworker, then bum a coffee off said coworker a few days later because theres nothing aged enough at home?

I do feel for the poor little possums that work at Maccas. Both of mine worked there and earned their money but a team is only as good as its coach and if management doesnt take an active interest in quality control then the product suffers.

After the apology, I was suckered back. I had a Mc Cappa that was Mc Weak and Mc Insipid and tasted like it was strained through a sweaty Mc Tartan sock.

I suppose their marketing ploy worked, I went back for one more...

    Never again!!! >:(

I dont "feel for the poor little possums that work at Maccas" at all. Its a Mc Job and one of the things MY generation learned was to give it your best shot regardless of how menial it was. I have absolutely no time for the "too cool to make an effort" generation and I am just grateful I am not employing them.

Photos can be edited by the power of the computer.
Think Photoshop and what it can do for wrinkles and blemishes.

There are emails i get every now and then from China and other asian countries where signs displayed at toilets and shop fronts have been lost in translation, and they are fair dinkum. Not edited. Hilarious. :D
