Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival - Melb 20th Mar

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

I hear that the last couple of "Celebrate the Beans" were good but I did not attend. I plan on going this year and if any one from interstate were thinking of flying (ie: cheap Jetstar flights) I can pick-up / drop-off at Avalon Airport.

I can get a few in the car and prob find some more Geelong locals with spare seats to ferry people to Melbourne too.

Any locals in Melbourne want to organise the "great cafe crawl" that day too? (or suggest a good one for CSers to meet/greet/eat)?

How much caffine is too much? :o

    ------------

    Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival
    20 March
Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival captures the passion and interest of the coffee lover. This one-day festival celebrates cafe culture, lifestyle and all things coffee. Celebrate the Bean is an event with many elements; coffee tasting, domestic machine display and demonstrations, workshops, and coffee themed entertainment.

We went last year and the coffee IMHO left alot to be desired out of the ten coffees we had only one was drinkable. Apparently Jaspers coffee was nice but we didnt try it.

We may go but im not sure at this stage.

Jasper and Atomica were the early web adopters, both have been around for a fair while and have a good rep for producing good coffee.

Who produced the other 10 coffees?

Fear not Andy, Ill be going too. Although, along with Rich, the coffees were not that great last year. Its not exactly the best environment for producing the best quality coffee though. Im hoping to get to some of the forums organised for the day.

Maybe we should organize to wear something distinctive so we can recognise other coffeesnobs.....

Hope so John. The offer stands for a ferry service from Avalon (unless you plan on doing the hire car thing). Just need to know the times the night before.

Ok... here is my second crack worth. Some quick and dirty coffee name-tags. Print it out on a colour printer and shove it into one of those business-card name tag thingies.

Challange for the day... if the coffee is crap say so. ;)

The funniest one i saw last year was one brand selling "Added Robusta" like it was a good thing. "Extra kick" so somthing like that. More like cheap coffee bean used a a buffer against price rises that does little for a blend other than adding cafine.

At least this year its coffee and chocolate. So if the coffee gets too bad, you can always try the chocolate. How bad can chocolate be?

Re: Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival - Melb 20th

    Rich,

your observation re someone presenting themselves as having "added robusta"......this is a good topic for anyone interested in coffee, because...

Robusta really does have a legitimate place in coffee blending depending on which ethnic group you (they, whoever) belong to, but where marketers in certain western countries exploit it in their own way by making claims such as that their blend contains only "100% arabica" (ie no robusta)!

    Let me expand...
    a) In many regions, the blends contain much more robusta than arabica, and the feeling about robusta vs arabica is the opposite to what we feel.

    b) there are high quality arabicas and bad, and there are good quality robutas and bad!!!!

When we are presented with the 100% arabica marketing line, are we being told which arabica it is....high quality or low quality arabica?. Those who want to use a low priced "filler" have quite a deal of low quality arabica to choose from...so

    c) does it matter if your blend has robust in it or not...?...IF IT TASTES GOOD...?

    d) does it matter if their blend is advertised as 100% arabica.....IF IT DOESNT TASTE GOOD...?

    e) there is no doubt in my mind that the robusta "thing" actually is closely tied to its caffeine content because those that are used to drinking coffee that is high in robusta, have developed not only the "taste" for robusta, but their bodies have also developed a dependence on the much higher caffeine content. When they tell you they cant get enough kick out of your nice mellow but probably (to their mind) "insipid" arabica based blend, they are telling us the truth...there is not enough kick in our coffee to satisfy their real, physical, need...!

The unfortunate thing for the people you saw at last years "cel.... the.....bean" who were proudly marketing their "added robusta", ....is that someone hasnt told them that (we think) theyre in the wrong market! Try telling this however to all those who insist on buying their favourite packeted roasted coffee imported from Italy, particularly the southern regions, where most of it has so much robusta in it that they should be marketing that that have a little "added arabica..."!

This may also give us some understanding of the situation where in conversation with many Italian consumers and roasters, they are just as shocked at us in the opposite sense, because we "are certainly not doing the right thing" in our espresso blends and that is, we are not adding high enough proportions of robusta (or any at all). According to them, our espresso blends are not designed the way they should be.

Suggest therefore, that purely for academic purposes, so that that coffeesnobs members will be able to recognize the flavour / characteristics of robusta and decide for themselves what side of the fence they wish to be on, that the CoffeeSnobs coop should offer a bag of 100% ROBUSTA through the polls. There would be no need to deliberately try and sabotage the academic aspect of this by deliberately selecting lowest possible quality available, the green bean broker should simply be asked for a quality of robusta that is commonly used in commercial coffee roasting.

Members should try roasting and consuming this as a single origin type, and also do some experimenting with blends including some arabica.

Just a few comments from left field for your interest, and food for thought!

    Regardez,
    FC.

Re: Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival - Melb 20th

I also would like to see more interest in good robusta in the forum. *As Fresh Coffee has indicated there is many blends of coffee available on the market the do have a percentage of robusta in them and will pull a shot that has a markedly higher level of caffeine in it.
I admit that I love coffee and I will also admit that I am addicted to caffeine (2 different things entirely) and would love to be able to get "my kick" out of a double in the morning but it isnt possible with 100% arabica coffee (even when roasted just past 1st crack). *I find that if I want "my kick" that I need 4 doubles of arabica or 1 double for my pleasure and a strong instant moccona.

Lets not be closed minded about coffee - arabica is coffee and so is robusta.

Id really like to see more interest in robusta and I think people should give it a try (were only talking somewhere between 1% and 10% in a blend).

    My two bobs worth.

Re: Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival - Melb 20th

Drifting off-topic a little (was: Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival ) but yes, I too am keen to try some home roasted robusta.
I know this has been mentioned in these forums before and always shot down as something not worthy of consideration. Robusta has been likened to dung and floor-sweepings nearly every time it was mentioned and I too was starting to form the opinion that it was a waste of time.

Its nice to see your post FC, it may help sway opinions when someone with "cred" voices a "at least have a look". I for one did not know that any "quality" robusta existed as I have been believing the "Aribica Mafia" marketing hype. ;D

FC, can you source or recommend a robusta worth trying?

Re: Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival - Melb 20th

All- bean ground & drunk will be on the yarra as you head from fed square to birrarung mar. Last year, we were near the sound stage, in the shade but Im not certain this year. Sounds like things will be smaller. A few roasters have pulled out- for cost reasons, I suspect....

Make yourself known- Ill be there (on the stand) all day except for the home roasting session (aimed at newbies) which I have to take- 1.30 pm.

Jill Adams will be running the tasting sessions. She has a fantastic palate. I wonder if she might like some contributions roasted by us?

Im really keen to get some pics of your setups for my talk. I feel well informed to talk on poppers and automated- eg Alp....but between you all, there are some incredibly resourceful setups.

If anyone has some pics that they are willing to have up on the big screen as a background slide show, message me and Ill give you my direct email addy to send them and Ill try to pop them into the presentation!

I will be giving coffeesnobs a big plug on the day and figure that there will be people wishing to ask questions after. Id greatly appreciate if we could have representation of coffeesnobs who roast with: a bbq roater, a heat gun and maybe something like a stir crazy or similar to assist with any queries should they eventuate?? *???

Thanks for the offer of the lift, but not flying into Avalon.
I am flying into Tulla first thing Sat morning and take the last flight out Sunday around 9.00pm
Sounds like the BG&D marque might be the best place to meet.
Anyone know what time the gig starts??

answering my own question. I found this guide:

    hot tips to go

See Australias cream of the crop go head to head in the finals of the Australian Barista Championship, as they compete for their place at the World Championships, to be held later this year in Seattle. And if you are looking for the tricks of the trade, check out the latest in domestic espresso machines or take in a free workshop at the Coffee Academy Training Stage located on the lawn beside the Yarra River.

    free workshops
10.00 am - The Barista at home: make great coffee from your domestic machine
11.00am - Tasting the Terroir: regional characteristics of the bean
12 noon - Local beans: Australian and fair trade coffees
1.30pm - Get roasted: a how to guide for the true aficionado
2.00pm - Traditions and cultures: hear the stories behind the brews
4.00pm - To be a Barista: the basics and beyond
5.00pm - The Barista at home: make great coffee from your domestic machine

Yes youre welcome to heckle! Beware though- we spray all hecklers with high pressure reheated milk scum mixed with underextracted espresso produced with beans roasted early in 1998 *:P. On harvest picnic projections, well most likely do close to 20kg in beans through the machine- weather permitting- so it will be crazy- but we will do our best *:)

I have adopted Fatboys creative idea for being noticed...

Although it isnt the "full sized" rubber chicken that I was hoping to find, it is a rubber chicken and it is now on a stick.

So if you see some nut-case at CTB this Sunday (with wide-eyes from too many espresso shots) with a 6 inch rubber chicken on a stick come and say gday!
    (if you dare!)

    Well Andy... challenge accepted!!
I was planning to have a bit of a wander around CTB on Sunday. Now I HAVE to go out and source a rubber chicken for the weekend.
Do you suppose that is what those ads are talking about when they say something for the weekend ?
    Im thinking... $2 shop perhaps.

A local toy shop had these 6" long ones.

My neighbours across the road have a chooks (an old farm getting swallowed by the suburban crawl) and if I thought I could get one to walk on lead I would have borrowed one of theirs. ;)
(I doubt they would have wanted me to put it on a stick)

A reminder to all that bean ground & drunk will be on the yarra as you head from fed square to birrarung mar...

Well have our regular organic- East Timor (single) and have also released our Organic decaf a couple of weeks ago. This newie is a swiss water process peruvian with some lovely chocolate, toffee and nut notes...

We will be doing our utmost to maintain quality in the cup. We anticipate 15-20 kilos through our 3 group on the day....way more challenging when I make one at home! I have our best baristii working our stand. Make yourselves known and hopefully Ill be able to pop out for a chat. Come and watch Ruth, our 15 year old newbie who is producing some great coffee and makes me sooooo proud! She proves that you dont have to be older to be passionate about coffee...

Ill be there (on the stand) all day except for the home roasting session (aimed at newbies) which I will be taking sometime around 1.30 pm.

Thanks to all members who have been so generous in contributing photos. They have been combined into a slideshow which can run in the background as inspiration for others who would like to get into roasting. Your generosity and support in helping me get the show together is greatly appreciated... :D

I will be giving coffeesnobs a big plug on the day during my talk and figure that there will be people wishing to ask questions afterwards. Id greatly appreciate if we could have representation of coffeesnobs members who can hang around for a bit and chat with people who would like further info. Perhaps if we can all gather at the front after the talk?

I hope its a great day for all and look forward to catching up with familiar coffeesnobs and putting a name to some new faces....

    Chris

Re: Celebrate the Bean Coffee Festival - Melb 20th

Thank you so much to everyone who turned up, visited, intorduced themselves and to the many who were able to hang for the talk- Graeme, Brett, Andy, Jon, Ed et al (which means those who I may have omitted *:-/). It was very reassuring for me to have you guys there as support....

Hope all who sampled bg&d enjoyed it...tho the humidity did play havoc with grind today *:(...outdoor events are always challenging in that respect....I hope you all had a great day...

Now for me...its snooze time....until next time (which for me *is tues nite @ hawkers mkt if any are going) and the next coffee!

    Thanks again all!

    Chris,
    It was a pleasure.
I thought you gave a great talk. Not too much info, reinforced the fact that it is a fun thing to do, its cheap to give it a try (beyond that... well see Poundys latest purchase ;D ) and there is a lot of info on the net to help you. Well done.
I also really enjoyed the decaf you made me earlier in the day. Very nice, well made, lovely taste, wouldnt have picked it as decaf if not told.

I had a good time. Hope the others did. Nice to meet a few new faces too.
    Brett.
