    Melbourne CBD recommendations please

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Im venturing down to one of my favourite places in a few weeks - Melbourne - and am thinking about making a visit to one or two commercial purveyors of caffeine based beverages, because I know that its not a waste of time doing so in that part of the world. *Now - I know that Melbourne has many fine cafes but would welcome one or two "must not miss" suggestions in town. *I know that that place next to where the kranskis are sold (?) at the Queen Vic Markets is pretty good, but, some of you folks know better than me. *Please make your recommendations known.*Might start a fun debate!!!

    Hi all!

After a recommendation from Chris (2muchcoffeeman) I had the pleasure of experiencing Maltitudes finest earlier in the week.

The Barista (Andrew) prepared a range of different brews to quench my thirst (Read: address my cravings) and I must say it is the best commercially prepared coffee I have tasted - with the exception of BG&D!

So now when my interstate collegues visit, Maltitude we will attend! ;D ;D

    Regards,

    James

Wow - a hot tip there - and nobody willing to start a war!!!. *:o Maltitude it is, then. *Ill be there to say "A large cup of your finest mugacino - and no less than 43 beans, my good man". *Cant wait. *Thanks for the advice. * :D *If youre in there between July 3 and 6, Ill be the guy passed out on the floor with 16 empty ristretto glasses/cups lined up on the table, with Andrew saying "Wheres that guy who just ordered another 12 espressi?" :P

539 Middleborough Rd, Box Hill North or 224 St Georges Rd, Northcote. If youd like to message me, Ill try to pop in and make you one personally ;). Would also suggest you might like to try Batch in Carlisle St, Balaclava and Atomica in Brunswick St, Fitzroy (tho Andrew at Maltitude uses Atomica anyway ;D)

I am back from Melbourne and had the pleasure of having the Maltitude experience. *Introduced myself to Andrew and he extracted some choice ristretti and espressi for me. *What a friendly guy! *They were extremely busy, but the place has a laid-back but quality feel to it. *Somehow the crowd evaporated for a few minutes and I was looked after in a very special way. *Absolutely dosed to the eyeballs - and loved it!! *Thanks for the recommendation, guys. *

    Maltitude ROCKS!

My working day doesnt start without a caffine fix from maltitude. Nothing else in the CBD comes close...

Sometimes I feel guilty drinking andrews art.

    Cheers,
    Dave.

ive only ordered coffee once from maltitude, and wasnt that impressed. it wasnt a bad coffee, but not necessarily great.

i used to go to pettzo last year, but they changed barristas and then changed owners, and have been avg ever since.

i usually stick to barristas inside the building now.

    Re: Melbourne CBD recommendations please

My wife and I went to Melbourne in May and we didnt have (by our standards) a bad coffee anywhere. In that regard, Id say Melbourne is better than Sydney where it is difficult to find a good coffee (still, it is better than Perth or Tasmania where good coffee are two words that dont go together. In Perth, the only consistent coffee is Gloria Jeans).

We tried one place in Melbourne which had been recommended and had good write-ups but didnt find it to be that brilliant (not Maltitude).

Im reluctant to name the places we tried cos I feel wed be laughed at because we thought they were OK. The problem is, of course, that taste is subjective.

Id certainly appreciate some names of places worth trying. Theres so many in Sinney that sorting the beans from the chaff isnt so easy. I tend to avoid coffee after meals because its rare for a restaurant to be able to make decent coffee. My wife sticks to hot chocolate cos good coffee is hard to find.

I do admit that since taking redundancy from my job at Paddo 4 years ago, I rarely travel to the city. I hate the crowds. I now work in the Blue Mountains and at a much more relaxed pace.

At Paddo I used to frequent Cafe Brioso (now Perry Lane). I thought they were pretty good.

Question for the Melbourne locals: Is Maltitude still what it used to be? I had the pleasure of being there around the time the guy passed out on the floor was :), but I know its since been sold. Does anyone have an update on how the new people are going? I imagine theyd have an awfully high calling to live up to...

We had been (on previous visits) to a coffee place in Flinders Lane between, I think, Elizabeth and Swanston) - they did their own roasting. We did try a large open air place in, I think, Swanston near Flinders, but were not that impressed.

What I have gleaned from previous posts:

    Delete maltitude. :(

    Bean Ground and Drunk
539 Middleborough Rd, Box Hill North or 224 St Georges Rd, Northcote.
(apparently operated by some CoffeeSnob using the moniker of 2muchcoffeeman :) )

    Headquarters
    Optus building on Collins street

    cnr Collins and Elizabeth

    Atomica

    Batch
    Carlisle st

    The Green Refectory
    Sydney Rd, Brunswick

    Tre Bicchieri
    623 Rathdowne St Carlton North

    The Lygon Street Foodstore
    Lygon St, Carlton

    And not least:

Pellegrinis is a must-see. They were the first place in Melb to have an espresso machine. Today, they proudly serve the worst coffee in the city.

Thats sad about the Malt, but not surprising really. Theres nothing inherently good about an establishment if the witch doctors dont know what theyre doing.

    Oops, missed them.

I got out a Melbourne street directory to see where they are. I assume from their website that they are in Abbotsford, its hard to tell from their website as they mention thats the location of their head office - which could be an administrative location.

My wife is flying down so it will be public transport only - basically only trams.

    Re: Melbourne CBD recommendations please

i can tell you Maltitude is really not that great. I would know, my step mom is one of the baristi...I had a laugh also i use to own it.
Barbara my step mom will try her best, is very clean and is a honest barista. She really paid attention with the coffee when we were there.

    The owner
Actually the owner has potential and when he tries he can make a good coffee. He can even pour good latte art. But the machine is not the cleanest machine on the block. The steam tips are a little thick, and the milk jugs look a little dirty at times. Ok the steam jugs are like a horror movie. The tips are the worst in Melbourne at times.

In all fairness to the crew at Maltitude. Its a hard job being a cafe owner. He is doing it hard. The rent is a killer and thats why i sold. Without Barbara and my dad working there, its really nothing. They are holding it together. They are retiring the end of the year so i dont know what is going to happen. If they make you a good coffee, support it. My point of view is they are getting the props from what I created with my team. No problem, i guess he paid for it. But it does disappoint me to see it like that. Yes I have offered to help. Answer....NO.

Where are the crew of Maltitude and all baristi I have had
    Marika- Maling Room Part Owner
    Helena- Maling Room
    Jess- Ciccalate Lygon Street
Sara- All over. Enoteca-jacque raymond-list is endless
    Jeremy- Lund in Sweden
    Malin 1- Lund in Sweden
    Malin 2- Lund in Sweden
Ben- London, rep UK European team challenge & trainer "http://jimseven.com/?p=266"
James- Flat white London- Maling Room
    Luca- Veneziano Caffe *
Tania- Maling Room - Moving to set up new cafe. Going to be great!!
    Tyzen- Maling Room.

Octane is pretty good. Fresh coffee, timed shots, good milk. Good for the city.

Piadina off Lonsdale street is awesome for food. Passion and pure love for food. Good coffee.

    Re: Melbourne CBD recommendations please

My wife has returned from Melbourne and tried a few of the coffee recommendations.

She tried to find St Ali - got to Sth Melbourne and started asking for Yarra Pl. *The first person was an oldie walking a dog so Elisabeth thought "Shell know!" *Alas, not so. *The response was "The Yarra, dear? *Thats nowhere near here. *That runs through Melbourne."

The second person said "I only moved to Melbourne last week". *After several more abortive attempts, she gave up.

She tried Sam I Am and thought it was no better than the worst from the local Michels where we live (hes improving).

She tried another place but they were closed.

She tended to stick to Groundshot in Flinders Lane. *Theyve been there about 8 years but they no longer roast on the premises - they do larger roasts elsewhere. *(I wonder if his desktop roaster is for sale? *Might be worth checking out by a local.)

ahhh, but isnt that one of the great things about St Ali? That its in a back lane that you would walk right past if you didnt look inside?

I know I had a bit of trouble first morning I went there, but once I stuck my head in the door I knew I was in the right place!
