    robusta?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi guys,

Just wondering, perhaps we could grab a few kilos of robusta in one of the upcoming polls, since it is apparently quite useful for adding a bit of undercurrent to blends and increasing crema/mouthfeel is it not? if added at a 20:1 ratio that would mean I would only need 500g of it, since I only have 10kg of green arabica at the moment... but I would mind sitting on 2.5 kilo for a few years just to have it around.. Just for curiosity too, it would be great to check it out and have a roast..

    Re: robusta?

In short, yes we will have some.

There are some VERY nasty Robusta beans on the market and that coupled with strong marketing dollars from the Arabica camps tend to cause the general misconception that Robusta is not worth drinking. This is also the case on internet forums where people that have never tried Robusta beans manage to rant in long diatribes about how bad they are.

We have used/had the Kappi Robusta a few times and it is a good quality bean. 5% in a blend does add crema but it also adds some sense triggers of commercial coffee that while quite different to a 100% Arabica blend is still an interesting variation to the cup.

We have been using the Kappi Robusta in some of the starter-packs so that CSírs can get an idea of what a good robusta can be and I expect that we are about due to poll it (or similar) again soon. Iíll sample some of the higher Robusta grades this month and see if we can find something special for the next polls.

PS: good to see you are open to the idea of trying something a little left field in your journey to coffee nirvana.
    ;)

    Hi Andy,

We were talking about Robusta at the Tassie workshops on the weekend and were all keen to try roasting and blending some, so I suspect that a few kilos would find themselves down south if they appear in BeanBay.

Everyone was dissapointed that the secret green bean demigod couldnt make it for the weekend, heres hoping somewhere between ordering, allocating, packing, posting and roasting, and your actual other life, we see you in tha map of *;) in the near future.

I really wanted to get down there last weekend, just couldnt swing it with the polls and life but will make it sometime. Looked like a great weekend and good to see more CSrs getting together to share and learn.

Wife and I spent our honeymoon touring Tassie in 95 and Im fairly keen to get the motorbike across there for a "squirt"... maybe in the new year.

Im sure the coffee will be far better than my last trip too.... I just have to plot the CSrs on a map to workout which direction to head.

    Re: robusta?

Just inished trying another sample of the evil round bean and I must say none of them have been even roughly worthy of making a BeanBay. Maybe its the end of the robusta season/cycle??

With any luck we will find a good one in the new year and when we do we will BeanBay it.
