Hols next week - Sunshine Coast

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All

Over time I have slowly encouraged my two teenage offspring to enjoy a good coffee. My wife is of Sicilian heritage and has been easer to bring on board :-) She is also very strong on FAMILY time!!!

I am taking my family up to the Sunshine Coast next week and am attempting to do the family thing, however it is really all a con. On the pretence of a drive or two I am looking to try out some coffee establishments :-)

Thus I have already contacted one of teh CS Sponsors " Pioneer Coffee Roastery" and as they are in between the Ginger factory and the Macadamia factory, it will allow me suggest a number of options. My two retro-bates also like the markets and I was sure that there was another location some where in or near Eumundi that had a good name. If some one can confirm or deny it would be helpful.

If any one has some recommendations as to where to go OR for that matter where NOT to go, I would be glad to get a PM from you.

Son = Affogato, Cappuccino, Macchiato, Iced Coffee & Syrup Coffees
Daughter = Cappuccino, Mocha Latte, Iced Coffee & Syrup Coffees
Wife = Cappuccino, Flat White & Mocha Latte
Me = Ristretto, Doppio, Macchiato, Caffè freddo, Flat White, Iced Coffee, Affogato and Doppio Ristretto (It all depends on what I have been doing and if I have eaten during the day)

What we need is a way of identifying CS so that we all know who we are and can promote each other. I dont expect a free coffee and understand that a establishment may be busy, but do like it when you can acknowledge another CS member.

Any issues with teh CS logo being put on a tee shirt ?

AM - I love your thinking, Id kinda like to go down the t-shirt path myself, I think I alluded to that in a post some moths back about Andy needing to ensure that the Intellectual Property of CS is protected but promoted as well.

Id Also love to see a coffee snob rating system for cafes (based on the little snob cups from the logo).

Hmmmm... maybe wed be thrown out of some establishments. Perhaps a secret sign, eh. Known only to fellow members.

ah yes, a small sign of the CS etched on the lintel (I once tried etching on a lentil but it was far to small for practical use).

I thought wed agreed a grouphead burn on the forearm was to be the "sign".

You know, like in the old Kung Fu series where he picks up the pot with his forearms and burns the dragon etc into his arms.

You raise your arm somewhat like a black power salute to expose the grouphead burn and are instantly recognised for what you are, a [s]bloody idiot[/s] CoffeeSnob.

Perhaps wed better forget body disfigurement and go for something innocuos and verbal...

Like: "(whistling into the air, clears throat) Ummm.... the...er....ducks fly north for the winter when the full moon rises.... (await response)

((Fellow customer screws up face and looks at you as though you are a complete idiot))

On second thoughts, lets keep to out anonymous selves.

    Ok Guys and Gals...

I know where all the Body art places are and while my son may be into full body piecing, burns and scarification along with my few tats and work generated scarification.....

My post was asking about recommended places as to where I might be able to enjoy a good COFFEE on the Sunshine Coast as I do have an addiction :-)

    Hey there AM,

I dont remember posting my picture up anywhere, howd you get hold of it? :o :-[ ;)

One place I can recommend is in Buderim and the premises from whom I purchased my wonderful little Bezzera ;D, they being "Samsara Fine Organic Cuisine" 87 Burnett Street Buderim and ask for Gilles (the owner), a very discerning gentleman who Im sure would be more than happy to make a brew to your specifications ;)

That dammed photographer, he stated that it was ME and he had never seen another quite like it :-)

I did see another on his wall and that did have a distinctive CS look to it. Maybe this is you

I will endever to get to Buderum and try a drop of their elixir. Strange is it not that the chemical compound is so simple... Coffee C20H25N30 see below, yet the taste varies so much due to other influences.

    Those pictures are great.
I spent a night in hospital the other week and as they were letting me go I joked to the nurse that she could leave the cannula in my arm where theyd taken blood samples, so I couls use it when I got home to top up my caffeine.
I got desperate at breakfast time and tried the Nescafe sachet but couldnt stomach it and Id run out of water then to have the tea instaed.

Anyway, she laughed knowingly and then took it out. ;D

Samsara is no longer there, they unfortunately went under. However, it is now a great restuarant called Decs on Buderim, and they use my coffee and dont brew a bad cup either.

    Ohh,

Sad to hear about Samsara but good on the other hand that you can still get a great coffee there under a different banner, and using your beans too 8-)

I was up there a couple of weeks ago, and the best flat white I had (other than my own, of course) was from Costa Noosa *at Sunshine Beach. * I think that it was their signature blend.
As an aside, they had some Yemen Yemen Ismaili. beans on sale for $150/kg. [smiley=shocked.gif]

Much cheaper to buy a bar of dark chocolate. But a poor substitute.

Coffee Places on the Sunny Coast:

    1) Pioneer Coffee Roastery (Yandina just off the Bruce) - Nothing wrong with a shameless plug
when there are 5 fine foods medals in the first year and exceptional baristas involved.
    2) Costa Noosa (Sunshine Beach) - They Roast their own and its fresh and if you catch the right
barista, stick to milk coffees though.
    3) 7 Acres Winery (Forest Glen, just off the Bruce) - Great food, wine and coffee. They use Pioneer
Coffee and they are some of the nicest people Ive met in the Industry.
    4) Sunshine Beach Food Store (Sunshine Beach) - They use Di Bella and do a bang up job, great
    location too.
    5) Cafe Le Monde (Hastings Street, Noosa) - A Local institution, although they use Vittorria if there
is an Indian guy behind the machine give it a go.

Look out for the local roasters Pioneer Coffee and Costa Noosa or Brisbanes Di Bella at any cafe. Stick to a cold beer on a deck somewhere rather than try most places up this part of the coast.

Many thanks, this was what I was looking for, but expected a little better from the area. Then again, high transient population and high turnover of staff and establishments.

Will try to keep a little diary, if my wife lets me ( She gets embarrassed), and let every one know how it all went.

while watchin the bassett coffee series on foxtel the other month, there was one episode where he interviewed a barista who has a tattoo of a group handle broken down (kind of like you see on the coffeeparts site) on the inside of his forearm..... maybe we can get a group discount on one on them each!

That would be Justin from Coffee Supreme in Melbourne.
The dude has some very cool machinery in his private collection; a grinder (seems like a DRM burrset) is one example.

p.s. iirc, there is a youngish looking Mark Dundon (currently StAli) also featured in that segment. Another hardcore coffee punk.

Ive found the Sunshine Coast has a great variety of coffee available, Ive had many cups that exhibited distinct varietal characteristics including
    -scalding hot
    -ice cold
    -burnt
    -insipid
    -bitter
    - sour
    -rancid

and at one abberant location, simply magnificent (thank you pioneer roastery :) *)
seriously good coffee is generally hard to get on the sunny coast

Well after some $200 and two weeks of great R&R I would have to agree with the comments above.

However in addition I found one place at Moffat Beach "Cafe By the Beach" that was at least consistent in providing a reasonable coffee (amore beans). Partly I believe to the Barista being the same on every occasion I visited.

For many operators, it would appear that the high turn over of clients and the fact that the majority of other outlets serving coffee, also delver a poor product. That there is little to drive the operators to improve.

Harsh comments maybe, but their bottom line has to be archived and their focus is on this and not on a Quality product.

I even tried a place that specialised in "Jamaican Blue ? " and while not bad, it was not worth the money and on change of Barista the result was NOT consistent.

I also notices that in most cases the returning cups were never seen by the barrister and thus on some / many occasions, there was little option for those working to see the crap left in the cups (coffee grinds etc). I would also suggest that even with a large turnover that the equipment would get a clean only ONCE a day at best.

Got back to Brisy and went straight to the Di Bella outlet at Bowen Hills and had a God like coffee for $2:00 ( Or was it due to the previous two weeks).

I then dropped into a place only 200m from home "The Coffee Guy" at 85 Kent Rd Wooloowin, and had a great coffee or two.

    So the overall outcome:

Many cups that exhibited distinct variety of characteristics including but not limited to
    -scalding hot
    -ice cold
    -burnt
    -insipid
    -bitter
    -sour
    -rancid
    -poor service

With only one or two exceptions... as listed above.

As per another post on CS (cant find it), the biggest factor that I experiences, has to be the Barista....

Thus, Barista, Grinder and Coffee as a skilled operator should be able to do some good with poor materials, but a poor Barista will fail to produce a passable product, even with the best raw materials.

    ********
    SO WHY is it that many coffee outlets put little effort into real training and support of their KEY operators ? I would suggest that;

1: many clients do not know what a quality coffee is,
2: many clients are not voicing their likes and dislikes, and
3: a high enough passing trade that the outlet can afford to loose a few discerning clients

Thus, the supplier has little or few business drivers to lift their game.

    **************

NOTE: Barista incerted over Barrister to protect the innocent ;D

    hehe, Anger Management....

I think that youll find that it is spelt BARISTA...I had a laugh! :D

Otherwise, youll be confusing us with those who stand up in a court of law and debate if youre guilty or not!!

    Okay, spelling lesson over...;)

Oh, and you forgot to add to that list that the operator is most likely in the game to make money, so theyre not really interested in training staff too much as that costs money.

Maybe that was a contributing factor to the bad coffee - a Barrister was making it not a Barista!:)... Lack of court cases = need for second job?

Keep an eye on Luca over the next few years.
One day he could be both!

By the way, if you got a good barrister making a bad coffee, they would successfully argue that the bad coffee was YOUR fault. Then apply for costs!

So true, there for there must be some Baristas out their training as Barristers, as many argue that it is my problem and that the product is OK.........

OK, OK so I was tired and the spell checker (Firefox) did its job without me checking...blame game ;D

On another note, I trust that I shant need one, that is a Barrister who might take offence at my slip up 8-)

Have not tried Caffeine Espresso and while John runs a tight shop at Naked Coffee, I have had some less than ideal shots at times from there. The web cam and the naked PF on the flat screen is a interesting marketing approch (Naked Coffee) however many I have taken there do not realise it is live and think it is a tape / cd.

Seems to be the usual issue of which BARISTA is on and how busy they are.
