    TOOOO MUCH COFFEE?????

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    :)
Okay so I thought Id actually do some calculations.
I took my upsized basket and filled it as I usually do, tapping it down, refilling, tapping, refilling, knife edge. Then emptied it all onto my electronic scales...
    24 grams.
At 4 a day is close to 100 grams
7 days a week is 700 grams of coffee a week!

but thats nto all caffiene is it? I mean I prefer the doppio ristretto, sweet and full-

I couldnt give blood lst month because my heart rate was too high-
Had to go to the doctor to get a medical.
ECG and all- His computer said I was normal... ( obviously it doesnt know me very well.)

Hs anyone else done the calculations on their coffee consumption?
It could be an interesting comparison. ::)

    Re: TOOOO MUCH COFFEE?????

No wonder your heart was racing. *Given that the standard espresso is based on 7 grams, so your 100 grams a day is 14 standard espressos per day. *My doctor had a fit when I told him I drank 8 - 10 espresso, and said that your average healthy person shouldnt have more than 4 espressos a day, due to caffeines strain on the heart. *

Oh, and the easier way to measure your dose on is to put the PF on the electronic scales, reset the scales to zero and then fill them. Or just weigh your PF and work out the difference. *:)

And I drink 4 cups a day at 14 grams per cup, so thats 56 grams per day, 392 grams per week. 8 standard espressos per day. Obviously I still need to listen to my doctor.....

    Re: TOOOO MUCH COFFEE?????

My GP went berserk when I confessed my coffee consumption to him. He didnt buy into the arabica having less caffeine and espresso being one of the low caffeine methods of brewing.

~22g per double , 5 times per day. I too was blissful for about 6 months, thinking I was hitting up 14-16g doubles... until I weighed the baskets... :o :o
i do try to have fallow periods, when on holidays and stuff, but yeah my doctor shakes his head when he sees me. I think I might have scarred him psychologically for life ;D :P

As far as I know, its a matter of yes and no. I recall reading somewhere that most of the caffeine is extracted in the tail end of the shot- but Im happy to be corrected ;). Many of us here base a milky drink on a doppio ristretto or ristretto- which is all primary extraction and lower in caffeine.

Your GP should be a whole lot more worried if you were drinking 5 cups from a french press where the grounds spend a heap more time in contact with water.

I think the go is definitely moderation, and, if youre sensitive to caffeine, perhaps to stay away from blends which include robusta. There may well be other compounds in the 250 odd which are in your shot that have an effect as well...Who knows?

    Let the discussions begin!

Im a child of the 80s, I drank cola by the gallon.

The only thing excess caffeine does to me is it makes me pee more.

Kidney failure is something I fear.

Well all I can say is youre lucky Rice if thats all it does to you.

Personally I mostly blend about 50/50 decaff and hi octane beans.
Makes it a bit of a challenge sometimes to get a good blend,
but as Rayzurhed can testify, there have been some really nice shots out of my Silvia.
This is because I know I have low tolerance to large amounts of caffeine day in, day out.

Yeah I also think that doctors often have a poor grasp of all the variables that affect specific situations, especially GPs, (they arent called General Practitioners for nothing), its not a criticism, just an acknowledgement that that they are only human after all.
I remember, many years ago a GP telling me that weight training had no aerobic benefit at all,...
yet specific testing I was able to have done over several months proved otherwise ;).

There are far too many claims coming out now about the relative caffeine content of different types of coffee brewing methods to discount them. There must be more caffeine in filter brewed coffee than some plungers, than espresso, than ristretto.

In any case, for those who live in big cities, how much smog do you ingest each day???
At least with coffee you can enjoy it ;)

    Re: TOOOO MUCH COFFEE?????

The medical profession only think they know better.

I watched a show the other day on The Atkins Diet.
It told how the majority of doctors rubbished his diet.
They said all sorts of negative things about it.

Funnily, no one actually tried clinically testing it for about 20 years.
When they did the first trials all the good things Atkins had said proved to be true and no of the bad things any one else said eventuated.

Unfortunately poor Dr Atkins slipped on an icey footpath and died 9 days later not long before the trial results went public.
So he never got to hear that he had been vindicated.

According to conventional medical "wisdom", my being overweight and having high cholestral should have me either dead of a heart attack by now or at least suffering from high blood pressure.

Unfortunately for their theories, I continue to have perfect blood pressure and no signs of a heart condition have ever been detected whenever Im tested.

Ill keep drinking my coffee thanks.

    Re: TOOOO MUCH COFFEE?????

I think that my four double shots, poured short, and consumed within a three hour period, last Friday, put me over the edge, but only just a little.

usually, the only way I can tell if I have consumed too much caffeine too quickly, is that I start to get heart palpitations, then I think to myself:

"Ohh well... I had better drink some water to dilute all that coffee, then!"

Does anyone know if these palpitations are actually bad for you, or is it just the bodies way of saying: "take it easy, buddy!"

I dont know that drinking water is going to do any good as far as countering the caffeine --- the amount of caffeine is still in your system irrespective of how much water is also in there.

But caffeine is *a diuretic -- it removes water from the body, and that is one good reason why it should not be taken after *a heavy alcohol drinking bout. * Alcohol is also a diuretic, and will dehydrate you. Taking coffee in that condition only serves to compound the dehyrdation effect.

So coffee flavoured liqueurs or affogatos are bad?

Lucky I couldnt find the Frangellico tonight to add to my iced coffee.

I usually have 2-3 milk base espresso per day.

If I consume more than 3 coffee, per day, I can smell coffee aroma when I pee. Is it the sign of kidney failure or everybody suffer the same problem?

Then hes a twit who needs to pull his head out of his nether regions.

With most varietals of Arabica beans it is physically impossible to have 100mg of caffeine in an espresso made from 7g of beans as there isnt that much caffeine in the beans.

Heres a post/discussion that has addressed this question previously: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1115516893/29#29

Recent research over the last 5 years is saying that caffeine is in fact not a diuretic.

If yall wanna have some fun and find out how much of your favorite caffeinated beverage is too much have a gander here: http://www.energyfiend.com/death-by-caffeine/ ;D

Believe that if you wish, Javaphile.... but the evidence, here in Australia at least, is to the contrary.... so I wont be straying too far from the Mens Room after a heavy hit of caffeine!! *;D ;)

If caffeine was anywhere near as bad a diuretic as it is claimed to be by many, Id have been a shriveled up husk blowing in the wind many years ago as coffee is virtually my only liquid intake and has been for years. 8-) ;D :)
