    Coffee drinking salutation?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi CS knowledgable persons,

Is there a Coffee drinking salutation? Many well known phrases exist (in many cultures) for alcohol drinks> How about coffee?

Maybe there is could be an ancient Ethiopian saying?

If no one knows of any, we should make up our own! Any suggestions?

Cheers! (that is not good enough!)

For those who may not be aware.....

    The Kaldi Legend

The legend tells the story of Kaldi the goat herder, who lived in Ethiopia about 300 AD. He noticed that after his goats had been eating red berries from a tree, the goats were lively and energetic until late in the evening. Kaldi tried the red berries himself and experienced the same effect. He mentioned this to the monks in the nearby monastery, who from then on took coffee to stay awake during the nightly prayer gatherings. The legend also has it that these monks discovered by chance that the beans could be roasted and that a beverage prepared from the roasted beans not only produced the same effect, but also tasted far better. The coffee beans, and the beverage made from them, were from then on regarded as a luxurious stimulant.

    Cheers,
    Mal.

Funny, until a while back, I thought a traditional Greek greeting was "Rey malaka!" Have since learnt otherwise.

Mal, thanks for the interpretation of the salutation!

There is a local (to me) coffee roasting business which uses that name. I will have to try some.

Its what everyone said in the kitchen. I finally asked the chef what it meant. Now it gets used a lot, without the first part.

bottoms up, yes a venerable Chilean saying, though it hasnt caught on for the ladies, at least in Chile. I was hoping for something universal.

I will be talking to some indigenous aussies in the next week, so I will ask them if we can borrow something. One phrase which is often used to describe the best of things, hope for future is, deadly.

How about its deadly mate!, or simply, deadly mate!

This combines a bit of whats your poision with the God shot

    Keep trying.

    Gungbai !

I havent stopped thinking about this topic. In fact I have been trying a few words.

Ive found that using the name *of a particular bean can be very satisfying, especially if you are about to consume an eponymous brew!

Yirgacheffe has a ring to it, an acknowledgement from deep within, this is truly great!

Harrar can be pronounced in bright and joyful anticipation, a celebration.

I have always insisted that Harrar should be pronounced in the manner of a Famous Five novel.

If you said "Yirgacheffe" the response is likely to be "Gesundheit".

    Re: Coffee drinking salutation?

... any drinking moment in Japan or Sth Korea hears a resounding kam-pae, comparable in translation to the Aussie equivalent of skull

... but true cultural meaning is nearer to the more sit-back, relax, enjoyable version of enjoy ... & sip, & enjoy the company of good friends!

& of course, then theres the coffee!

A lot of us (like me) are enjoying the Malabar beans at the moment.

However, saluting with Malabar may bring to mind (among non-CSers) the Malabar sewerage treatment plant or the location of Long Bay gaol. :P

there.s a saying in dutch: moord bak ~ which literally translates to "murder cup of coffee" or in local parlance it would suggest that "this cup of coffee is so strong it will kill you!" so moord bak gets my vote!

    Re: Coffee drinking salutation?

oh, gosh, dont blame the coffee for the bloodbath... ;D ;D
no, the coffee itself wont kill you, but "other people would kill to get a cup of coffee like that!!"

the word "moord" or murder in this context is the equivalent of the English "killer" as in great, fantastic...

yep, "moord-bak" has my vote, or even "moord-bakkie" which means the same: great coffee!

or, how about the simple :"cuppa" as salutation??
