Just been given coffee trees - whats best position

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all.

A very nice mate just gave me some coffee trees that had grown up under hers. I dont know what variety they are. I dont know if there is a leaf guide to get me close or not?

Whats the best soil and position for them. I am in SE Qld.

    Cheers

Ozscott - same part of the world as you, seQ, & thinking growing my own experimentally. Expert horticultural knowledge maybe required - you & me! From my initial research, it seems that the Arabica cultivars like high altitude, canopied with rainforest - is humidity a key here? Dunno whether its replicatible in seQ, but with any damn plant, good organic fertilising helps Ive found with the ol vege patch.

Melbournian CSs will suffer from their weather preventing any promising crop - maybe rely on table grapes & dairy ...? The green bean wont handle any frost - as Tepin noted.

Make sure you put a good layer of mulch around the tree, not touching the trunk though, to keep the soil moist.

I wonder if People in the Southern States could grow Coffee to maturity if they used the techniques the Italians used for Lemons at Lake Garda in the 1800s ?
Terraced gardens Facing the Sun with Hessian curtains.. Ill try to find a better description, I have it in a book somewhere at home..

Why i mentioned the frost, about 3 kilometres west of me and i live 400mtrs from High tide, a bloke has a property and had about 200 Coffee sedlings die this winter, IMHO its good country for growing Gum Trees..

If you live in SEQ go and see the good folks up Mt Tamborine Coffee Plantation and see how its done.Their plants got well frosted this year but are absolutely loaded and are showing no stress what so-ever.They are 550 metres high. They recently had a great write-up in the media relating to their ...quote"exceptional quality"coffee.

I had a couple of frosty mornings here in Sydney but my little plants were sheltered and have survived nicely.
