    Sweetest Coffee Bean

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hello all again,

I usually come on and check whats new, but havnt posted in a while. :(

As everyone knows beans are a plenty, and i have a simple question (hopefully simple).

What is the sweetest natural bean around?
Im sure there will be a few nominations, but if i get 2 or 3 names so i can go buy and try then ill be a happy *:)

I can pour a good expresso (after trials, coffee levels, tamper pressure, grind levels, wasted coffee etc etc.) i finally found the best method for me, but now i need the perfect sweet bean.

    Thanks in advance.

Click on the Buy Brown link on the left.
Then you can read the descriptions of all the beans on offer and decide what suits your taste.

    Thanks Thundergod,

I have read through them all but nothing really stood out as the sweetest.
If you had to pick one or any other what would be your sweetest bean you have tasted if you dont mind me asking?

Or is there another site where it rates sweetness of the bean.

    Re: Sweetest Coffee Bean

Good question. Reports are that the new Dominican Baharona AAA is a sweet bean. One that is often mentioned as being very sweet is the Daterra Sweet collection beans from Brazil. The Mountain Top bin 549 is pretty sweet, but the MT bin 35 will probably be even sweeter as I can even smell the sugars in the greens (which Ive never done before). Ive also had a Guatamalan bean from Pioneer Roastery that was a very sweet bean.

However sweetness also depends on roast profile. So its not just the bean, but how yuo roast it. But dont ask me how, as Im still in a steep learnng curve myself.

    Agreed re the roasting.

I didint manage to get the Daterra to reach its potential.

Lately Ive made my boss a short black with PNG Kimel and the Cuban Altera from the BeanBay a few months ago.

When he buys his coffee he adds 1 sugar.
    He drinks mine without sugar.

    Interesting question.

I can remember having two freakishly sweet espresso blends recently; one was the traditional northern italian espresso blend from Ecco Caffe. It was probably three weeks or a month old by the time that I got my mits on it, seeing as it was brought back from the USA, but it was just incredibly sweet. The other was an experimental espresso blend by Donny, one of the roasters at work.

I think that the sweet element in each of those blends was a brasilian coffee. Donnys might have been a pulped natural process.

However sweetness also depends on roast profile. So its not just the bean, but how yuo roast it. But dont ask me how, as Im still in a steep learnng curve myself.
    x2!

Dosing down seems to bring out a bit more sweetness in espresso, as well as a bit more acidity, all of which is at the expense of body and mouthfeel.

    Cheers,

    Luca

PNG Sigri is the sweetest bean to hit my taste buds so far.
The coffee trees in the Sigri area are rumoured to come from the Jamaican Blue Mountain plantations which would account for among other things, its sweetness.

    Re: Sweetest Coffee Bean

    Yes, good question.

As Luca says, some roasters seem to have mastered the art of making
a sweet blend eg recent samples Ive had of Rios espresso blend.

I keep trying but with limited success so far. As Sparky says, Daterra has
a reputation for sweetness. I have three Daterras, but have only
managed significant sweeteness a couple of times. There was a thread
a few months ago on "red crema" which involved downdosing and
higher brew temperature -- that sometimes accentuated sweetness.

I had some Costa Rica Tarrazu a few months ago that came up very
sweet. This was one I bought locally, just a small amount, havent
yet tried the CR Dota from Beanbay.

Recently we tried some locally roasted Kona as an experiment. One
espresso really surprised me -- intense acidity (of a nice kind) and
intense sweetness together. But a little expensive to try to repeat that.

Never mind about what someone says roasters can or cant do, please just answer the question for the fella that asked...its about the coffee and this is coffeesnobs not roastersnobs:

Indian plantation A grade (sometimes known as Mysore, but not necessarily from that area).

Not to confuse "sweetness" with the character of sugar.

Yes, but if they want a roasted bean that is sweet than the roasting style of the particular roaster can affect the sweetness as much as the bean used.

    Hmm ...

    Curmudgeon:

"The sweetest beans are Indian Plantation A grade." (Depending on how theyre roasted.)

    Clinton:

"I did not have sex with that woman." (Depending on how you define sex.)

    ;D

    Re: Sweetest Coffee Bean

How about PNG beans, again depending on roast,
I have been able to detect a honey aroma from PNG A,
and it was even stronger from PNG pea-berry from last years offering.
    Both made relatively sweet drinks.

    Another point worth mention,
is this for espresso only, or as a base for milk drinks?????
The temperature of the milk also affects the sweetness of the drink......

    Bullitt I agree.
My PNG Kimel has everyone at work no longer adding sugar to their coffee.
