I had the perfect solution when I was last up that way 2 years ago...I shipped a Silvia and Rocky to Port Douglas...I was scared and rightly so!

Did get a good shot at the Port Douglas bookshop and the worst coffee was at Coffee Works- followed closely by Skybury...

Stay away from Skybury coffee. That was the one and only coffee I had whilst I was up at Cairns/Port Douglas/Mareeba earlier this year

I can help you with 2 places:

Maryborough - Sexie Coffee (on the Bruce highway on the northern side of town)

Roasting their own coffee on a 6 Kg Diedrich and then producing espresso on 2 Marzoccos with a pretty good result. Tip though, stay away from their take-aways as they are in foamies

Sunshine Coast - Pioneer Coffee (take Yandina exit and follow signs to the Ginger factory)

Your friends will not be dissapointed I can personally gaurentee you of that!!!

I can vouch for that ;D

As for Port.. Rehab, opposite the Coles Center. Cairns.. at the entrance to the Pier market place is a operation that roasts their own on site.

I just spend two weeks around that region, and here a some places to check out:-

The Junction Cafe, Mossaman (15min away from PD towards the Cape) Tobys Estate. Consistently well made espresso, but sometimes in the morning the grind is too course - but when you need to feed your addiction well hey its OK.

Whet Cafe, Cape Tribulation. Beautiful, lush relaxed cafe. Coffee made with love and food to match. Loved the Daintree, and your right in it at Whet.

Zinc, Port Douglas. Sexy looking place. great staff, coffee better than you expect from a big restaurant.

    I hope thats helpful.

Hey mahalia you wouldnt believe it with the revamp they did to the junction but it used to be the greasiest smely fish n chip shop in Mossvegas. When I went there last time while I was up north I found the coffee fluctuated significantly on which of the couple made it, that said however it still did walks over the rest of Mossmans meringue.

Did you try Rehab at port? Or "Elanors Restaurant" in the Daintree township?

Whilst the coffee at Rehab is classes beyond anything else you get in Port Douglas they certainly do not roast their own.

Stefan gets fresh coffee in from Coffee Supreme (Melb) three times a week.

Kidsdoctor you misunderstood me or I just have terrible grammar... I think a bit of both. I know rehab dont roast their own as when I was talking to their Head Barista from Melbourne he was telling me about Coffee Supreme. In reference to the roasting I was referring to the shop at the Pier marketplace.

As a side note you are you based up that way?

Sorry, I did indeed miss that detail in reading. ;-)

Not exactly based there, some 500k south in Townsville (temporary though, we usually reside in Melbourne). Went to Pt Douglas for a quick holiday a few weeks back and was actually very surprised to find decent coffee up there (mind you, very expensive as well).

Now if anyone is interested at all in good coffee in Townsville... Well, we do have a local roaster (Coffee Dominion) that sells decent stuff for decent price ($28 a kilo). I have yet to drink a good cup in store but Ive only tried twice and cant be bothered any more. The bean quality tends to vary quite a bit but Im quite happy with their "Bounce" and "Venezia Primo" (having Supreme, Primo or something down this line in the name always helps to make the customer feel hes buying something very special...)

Ive ordered quite a bit of coffee from Melbourne (St. Ali, Veneziano and Andys "Wow") but it does get quite expensive with all the postage. Circumstances can be a bit difficult to produce a nice shot in summer with all the mad humidity but at the moment things are sweet: 25 degree days and not too humid at all! :-)

While Im off-topic: Is there a way to order Coffee Supreme by mail? Tried through the web but I always end up on their NZ site. :-(

Dominion Coffee in Townsville was decent the one time I went there. The piccolo was awful, but the shot good ironically...

thanks to this site - managed to find Re:Hab in Port Douglas. Not bad (uses supreme coffee), but hellishly expensive. $5 for a large takeaway!.

Had a mediocre coffee at coffee works in Mareeba- but really enjoyed checking out Ian Berstens collection that they have bought. Some amazing machines, grinders, roasters and various bits and pieces.

Other than that - was glad for the aeropress!

This whole thread is why I [s]want[/s] need to buy a set-up once my tax return or Krudd stimulation comes through.
There are few enough places that make drinkable, let alone good coffee around Cairns.

Recently had 10 days in Port Douglas. *Was so happy to find re:hab and Id go so far as to say that they made as good if not the best coffee Ive had anywhere for a long time. *Lovely, sweet, mouth filling double espressos.
