How often do you service your tamp ?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Now, I know some of you will be think AM has had one too many risottos opps *middle of teh pour coffees. * *However I have a few Tamps and most of them cheep... * But I have noticed that *a polish appeared to assist... Then I had another RED or two...

So off I went to research and I found this http://groups.google.com/group/alt.coffee/browse_thread/thread/24d88170609cf32c *needless to say I fell about for a while giggled like a schoolgirl, as I could see where both parties and some onlookers were getting confused...

Then I forgot about it... as *the next morning was a blur... and needless to say it was polishing a CPU *and CPU heat sink, that reminded me...

Open for discussion, before I go grab another red or two...

How do you treat your Tamp and does it really get old and loose its edge ?

Oh, definitely. Every six months I send mine away to be serviced and it comes back good as new. It only costs $65 per service plus postage. The difference is really noticeable :)

(BTW its best if you time the service so that its done at the time of a full moon so that the metal molecules are all lined up properly.)

I was going to get mine serviced after I finished polishing the beans from my last roast. ;)

Damm... I need to charge more... *I only get dinner made, after I sharpen the main Knife (20 min on a stone and a strop) .... *

Maybe we could do an exchange service and include some magnetic *strips to help the Tamp stay in service for longer.. * :o

Something tells me there might be $$$ to be made here ::)

I personally think crystals are the way to go much more subtle than magnets which are over valued. Plus you can charge a lot more for quartz. ;D

I dont know if I should laugh at em or just shake my head slowly side to side and mutter "tsk tsk"?

EVERYONE KNOWS what should be used to tune your tamp...

(works on quartz and magnets too, but not during a high tide)

Not much money to be made selling Brasso :(. besides it is an abrasive and would remove microns of metal each time and the tamper would wear out ion 30 or 40 years of polishing. ::)

However what about pyramids, they work on everything 20 or 30 years under a pyramid and it should be right to go. ;D ;D

Personally I find a wipe with a soft cloth works.

Of course you are all wrong.

I know a mystic New Age practitioner who can knock up (so to speak) a you beaut Homeopathic salve to cure your tamp of all known maladies that plague our tamps.

Of course I am the sole worldwide agent for this remedy so let me know your requirements.

5% discount for all coffeesnob members of course.

    Franchises available.....

What about the old theory that whatever is placed in a copper pyramid becomes clean, sharp or just works better.

Surely the sporting thing to do would be polish it with saliva - suitably minty of course.

That might end up with the tamp leaning to the left at the start of the day, but then reversing to the right at the end of the day.

Youre all quite mad really. The only ASDA approved method is the Norwegian Fish Slapping dance performed bi-annually.

Re: How often do you service your tamp ?

I know youll all cackle over the input of a serious comment here... :) Metal doesnt go soft or spongy, so the only thing thats going to happen is the appearance of various amounts of denting, scuffing and scratching. Unless its so dinged that it no longer fits the basket, none of that will affect the tampers ability to effectively transfer force from the users hand to the coffee. It will mainly affect the ability to do a clean polish in that an uneven surface will more likely rip the surface of the puck than polish it, possibly causing some coffee to stick to the dents in the base or walls of the tamper.

So there is a small element of truth in what they say but only as far as to say that every so often it may be beneficial to your ability to polish the puck to have the base and edges polished (in minor cases) or reskimmed (in more extreme cases). The frequency with which this would be required (as such) depends on the metal used (with stainless requiring the least care, and aluminium and the plethora of fashionable-but-utterly-unfit-for-purpose soft metals such as brass and copper requiring a lot more) and obviously the amount of abuse it gets.

Re: How often do you service your tamp ?

Im sorry Greg, you have offered good information 8-). However I dont think this thread was concerned about finding the proper way to retune a tamper (not that a Pullman tamper would ever require such efforts) :).

I tend to lean towards the Pyramid option as many people bought them for sharpening razors and are still waiting to see if they work. If they bought that they, will buy them to retune their tamper - I have even thought of a brand name "Tampamid" I am sure there is a dollar of two in this [smiley=evil.gif]. How about a Stainless steel pyramid or a Chrome one to match the Machines???

I would suggest that to ensure that oils and other contaminates do not hasten the demise of the Tamp base or the crafted handle. That people ensure that their hands are also clean before use, some have even suggested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel_soap *

Now this does not suggest that a good Stainless Steel Tamp base should be removed and used for hand washing, but it could explain why odours from bad roasts or store bought beans do not linger on your tamp.

Is any of this relevant to Gregs post... No! Because most of what he said is true... The only issue I have is that if my Tamp gets a skim taken off, then the balance and change in weight might have an effect ? To prove this you will need to order a Naked PF from Greg to assist in your QA check.

Nothing to do with servicing but seems like an idea for a mod,how about a tamper with a built in spirit level bubble in the top of the handle, would ensure a level tamp every time, assuming yer bench is level of course. :D

My Tamp is places on the highest part of my coffee making facility where it can be worshiped and treated like a God in the hope that the gods look favorably on it and keep it in great condition reducing the need to service it.

Then of course there is the TrueTamp rings around the base of a Pullman Tamper that let you see if your tamp is level or not.

Mrs Luwak showed great commitment to our Pullman this morning. She dropped it while making coffee and stuck the big toe out to break its fall. Those things are kind of heavy at 9.8m/s/s! Ouch!

Id like you to know that I checked to make sure she was OK before I checked out the tamper. What a guy...

When I had the timber handle Pullman deluxe I oiled the timber with almond oil
By liberally coating the handle with almond oil and letting it be absorbed overnight prior to a polishing buff in the morning

The new barista tamper has the anodised handle and gets a wipe on every use

I thought the next line was going to be, "I found it had grown into a 2 metre high tree in full flower." Now, where can I get a cow so that I can swap it for some beans? ;D ;D

After much research I have found that a faulty tamper can infect other tampers and potentially destroy also your coffee machine and grinders. If infected, these other appliances will just stop working.

I am prepared to safely dispose of your infected and hazardous tampers for a small fee of $5

A good suggestion but I would have though that a better one would be to inoculate equipment against such infection.

I just so happen to have recently scored up a reliable supply of Tampiflu (a slightly modified variant of surplus Tamiflu) and for a nominal fee (open to negotiation) will be happy to share this with all fellow CSers

This sounds good to me although I hope the Tampiflu is more effective on the tamper contagion than Tamiflu is on H1N1! ;D

    How did the trials go?
