I smell gimmick (green beans are cheaper than roasted) but found this

Raw coffee bean may aid obesity battle

    By Neil Merrett17-Oct-2007 -

Unroasted green coffee bean extract taken as a drink or supplement can help people reduce weight, according to a new study.

The study, to be published in the November 2007 edition of the Journal of International Medical Research, was funded by Norway-based Med-Eq, which makes Coffeeslender, a slimming drink made from unroasted green coffee beans.

Scientist Erling Thom, who headed a team that completed the study, said the research highlighted some benefits in weight reduction by consuming products like Coffeeslender.

"Green coffee bean extract supplemented coffee has a significant effect on the absorption and utilisation of some nutrients from the diet," he stated. "This effect, when Coffeeslender is used for a reasonable period, has been shown to aid weight management."

The testing, a randomised, double blind study performed on 30 people, took place over 12 weeks. The testing compared Coffeeslender with instant coffee.

Half the participants drank Coffeeslender, with the remaining group put on instant coffee.

Thom reported that the Coffeeslender group recorded an average weight loss of 5.4kg (11.9 lbs) over the period. Those consuming instant coffee by comparison, posted no "significant" difference in weight, according to the study.

Wow a whole 30 people for 12 weeks now there is a Today Tonight worthy study ;) Where is the taken in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and exercise ..... as opposed to the rest of the study on a diet of TV and Muckdonalds.

I want an electric car as well Flynnaus, imagine, charged from solar cells at home/work and never having to bow down to big oil again. Not to mention, in dash HX espresso machine as an option. Mind you, metallic paint is usually $400-$1000 extra as an option, i wonder how much that "fruit" would cost?
    Also love a nice cigar.

Was in the Coles stoopidmarket yesterday and heard an ad for this on their p.a. Definitely had a "What the...!?" moment with my son and I speculating on the various types to be rushing to buy that product.

Couldnt even bear to go to the coffee section to check it out for ourselves!! ;D

Im wondering what consumer research they have done on this product. As bad as instant coffee tastes, my not quite roasted long enough beans taste awful. Anyway, wouldnt the process of making it instant cancel out any of the medicinal benefits?

Maybe Nestle have hired the same marketing gurus as used by the toothbrush manufacturers. Im staggered by how many new concepts can be shoved into a toothbrush each year.

Antioxidants are just the next marketing gimmick. Im sure they all congratulated themselves and had a big lunch after coming up with that idea. Itll be something new next month. I mean really - trying to con people into drinking instant coffee that contain raw beans because they might get some antioxidants - gimme a break >:(

On a similar note, I was reading a womens magazine today and there was a range of facial products that used the flowers of the Coffee Plant as it had the highest level of antioxidants known.

Wow, not only drinking it, but also slathering it on my face - I may never get a good nights sleep again!

    ;D

You boys aint seen nothing until youve had a good look at the amount of rubbish they claim has anti-ageing properties/ wrinkle decreasers/line removers/skin dullness eliminators, etc, etc, etc, etc. Quite an industry and - sadly - the marketing must work because these companies havent gone out of business yet.

yeah im kinda curious too. havent had nescafe for about 7 years now. Its all about the marketing. A girl at work has fallen for it as it "has more anti-oxidants than green tea". Sad realy.

Im a confessed coffee nut and I can vouch for trying most of the stuff out there for the hell of it.

Theyve managed to make Greenblend taste quite good, but thats because its actually much the same as regular coffee with some cheap artificials.

There a now a couple of imported products selling in Australia that contain a bunch of supplements/chinese herbs + arabica coffee. The sad thing is they are all attaching their "weight-loss" propeganda to the sell.

Super Green Coffee is one of these alternative coffees I have tried. You can taste the other ingredients, but the arabica does an okay job at overpowering it. Be prepared for a different taste anyway, and a longer buzz. Its not cheap, so I am trying to have it stocked in my store!

Another one similar is Coffee Shape, but also expensive :(

    Hi Maria,

welcome to CS. Make sure you have a read of this posting on site rules lest the mod squads wrath be incurred http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1169531478

Personally adding herbs and flavours to coffee is sacrilege ;) and to claim weight loss properties is pure bunkum and hocus pocus ::)

    Welcome Maria... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Those links are OK, dont think many members are going to be encouraged to try any of this stuff, seeing as how we are Coffee Snobs after all.... 8-)

Do yourself a favour Maria, try some real coffee brewed by someone who knows what theyre doing while using only freshly roasted, high quality beans.... Such as we have access to here from Andy, our terrific Site Sponsors and other passionate, specialist coffee outlets often referred to here on these boards.

Instant is just instant, its NOT coffee Im afraid, no matter what is being claimed on the label... ;)

Blend Green beans with Roasted beans

Hi all, just wondering if there was a theory on weather you can blend Green beans with roasted beans. *I have just seen the ad on TV for Nescafe Greenblend and it got me thinking if it was something that could actualy be done.

It has sparked my imagination to see what would end up in the cup, dont really care as to what the Nescafe blend taste like or the claimed extra 70% antioxidants. *Just curiouse to see if anyone here has tried doing it at home.

Would you just blend the same bean or would you try to blend from different regions?

    Thanks

    Chris

Even better--apparently research shows that roasting has either little, no, or a positive effect on antioxidant activity.

    http://www.coffeescience.org/antioxidant

This leaves the only question being: Which tastes better?

Dont get me started. It really gives me the irrits with the amont I have to pay for the latest four wheel drive toothbrush or razor blade with double overhead cams, independent suspension and self cleaning fluffy dice to cover their bloody R & D costs when all I want is something to brush my teeth and give me a shave. AND give me blades that will last more than 3 shaves before becoming blunt as a *insert own analogy here*.

    End of rant!!!!

Just realised, that was 12 months ago ;D See how a good rant overwhelms all rhyme or feason.

The goodness of NESCAFÉ Green Blend lies within the unfrosted green coffee beans. They are naturally rich in polyphenol antioxidants, which can help protect the body’s cells from day to day damage. Polyphenol antioxidants are also found in green tea and cocoa.

Even if I were an instant coffee drinker I would rule this out because I hate having psuedo-science marketing bullplop forcefed to me like a consumer-goose being fattened up for fois gra(s)tuity. Pet peeve, even.

And as quick response to sparcs, Ive tried under-roasted beans and found it less than delicious, my desire to have more antioxidants in my diet is less than my desire to have coffee that tastes good and it just doesnt seem plausible that on taste alone this would be a winning idea. In terms of the AOs, maybe it would be worth trying if you felt you needed that but how are you going to be able to compare AO levels at home? Maybe if you have a scientific background?

1: Principle... Tried an espresso over a blue cheese and found it to be rather - interesting - NOT....

Raw any thing is not a principle of mine... Meat and over cooked vegies for me ;D

2: Icing sugar or Cocaine.. Suchhhhh My wife always wants to know why I rinse and collect the water from all the SA coffee bags... Dont say any thing...

3: more antioxidants or a vice... Ummmm Lung lolly time..

So in a nut shell.. If some one wants to grind / brew and drink green coffee beans.. FINE.. Not for me at this stage.

Hey guys! I know this thread is stale, however, I've been drinking green blend these past few weeks.. it wasn't until a friend pointed out dramatic weightloss that I realised it could be this product. I had a baby 19mths ago, and during the pregnancy I stacked on approx 30 kgs.. - I liked food! and since then I've found it hard to lose any real noticeable weight. I started drinking it, because it was on special.. then found I really liked the taste.. so much so that when I'd go for a sip and find my cup empty - I felt a little sad.. so I'd make another cup. Over the span of the past 6 weeks, I've done nothing unusual to my eating and exercise habits - save for green blend, and total weightloss approx from that date is 6.5kgs. the dramatics noted by a friend as previously mentioned are seen in loss of inches.. If what they say about Polyphenol Antioxidants is true then how bad could it be? I'm a barista and I love the taste of good coffee, real coffee.. but at home I'm an instant coffee girl and this is the best I've found so far.

Could you tell us where you work please Jaye? Sounds like the kind of place I keep an eye out for... (to make sure I stay well away from.)

If I was going to hire people to go to sites and counter the bad PR I'm getting, I'd make sure I got my money's worth by having them make a few posts at least, in the spirit of the site, before posting my advertising junk mail. Mind you, I'd also be telling them NOT to go reviving old threads full of derision and scorn for my product so they become fresh and new for a whole new lot of folks to read. I think I'd be docking the pay of Jaye...

Anybody wanting antioxidants should be eating blueberries, not drinking the kool-aid from the urinals of the PR companies. (I got served some at a 'friend's' place - haven't had a coffee there since. He was positive I would be able to tell it wasn't Moccona - he was wrong)

    Hi Jaye,
    Welcome to Coffee Snobs!

While some companies are claiming weight loss with instant green coffee you are far better off using natural, unprocessed raw green coffee beans as a suppository whenever you are hungry. This has been shown to reduce food cravings particularly in public places and while travelling to and from work.

We have a large range of these green coffees available for immediate delivery in CoffeeSnobs - BeanBay some of the available origins will be easier to consume than others.

Let us know how it goes.

And if you are going to use our beans as suppositories .................. then hands off the Maui!!
Actually, Jaye, you should locate a source of coffee cherries and use them as suppositories instead.

Then you can make use of the waste...... maybe even put them back in! 8-O

And then there's this from the CEO of Nestlé.............
