Woo Hoo - Sutherland Council have said, "YES" to the proposed use of the shop!
With the lease at Taren Point due for renewal in the not too distant future Ive decided that a move from a warehouse environment to a shopfront would be more suitable to continue to build the cuppacoffee brand name.
Hence, January promises to be busy as I prepare the new premises and maintain normal trading hours at the roastery.
The new location is a secret for now, though keep an eye out for clues as to the location between now and the time of our Grand Opening - therell be prizes, along with some great opening specials.
First clue...1000s of cars drive by every day, but there is plenty of parking. ;)
Woo Hoo - Sutherland Council have said, "YES" to the proposed use of the shop!
Excellent news and a great Chrissie present.
Is it similar config to Cuppacoffee Taren Point or are you going to provide proper cafe style amenities as well?
I think I have a couple of possible locations in mind but Ill reserve my guesses as you wouldnt acknowledge them under the official Cuppacoffee Secrets Act. Youre obviously remaining in the Shire
It will remain similar to the set-up at Taren Point, though might I might add muffins or the like to the already extensive (not) menu. ;)
WOW a council saying yes is a great start!Originally Posted by cuppacoffee link=1229240946/0#1 date=1229391336
Will watch with baited breath for the details.
A council saying yes in such quick fashion is extraordinary!Originally Posted by Andy Freeman link=1229240946/0#4 date=1229395583
Very exiting, Den. I guess youll be tied to the shop more when youve moved (due to the huge influx of business youll encounter ;) ) and wont have time for the mobile barista-ing?
PS - Cookies were lovely. You wouldnt be able to do Portugese tarts would you, Den? Ofra has me hooked - those things are addictive! :-[
It is exciting for sure!
Going down the road this afternoon to take some measurements and grimace again at the dirty carpet tiles that are currently there.
Barista gigs will still be happening... I have a plan! ;)
Heres a clue...
Looks like I might be able to walk there ;)
It all sounds very exciting and intriguing Dennis.
Nice hack into the RTA signage network Dennis.
I think the yellow sign on the left could become a cuppacoffee coffee cup too.
Aha, I know it now. You could almost hear a pin drop around that area ;)
Heres the shell of the shop...around 70sqm complete with fireplace.
The door on the left leads down to a basement.
Cant wait to see it filled up with all your stuff, Den.
Wheres Dudley going?
Looks good so far Den - a bit more character than a warehouse unit. Is the door on the right the front door?
Fireplace! I imagine it is inoperative (or local laws prohibit use), otherwise it could be a bit of a drawcard in winter with a few comfy armchairs and (naturally) a coffee table.
So Dudley will be installed in the basement? I guess if you cant use the fireplace, it might also be a convenient flue??
congratulations, Dennis !! wish i was closer to be able to be part of the excitement ;)
Id think the door on the right is Denniss "duck out the back for a quick smoke" door. ;D Probably taking the photo through the front glazing, eh Den?Originally Posted by flynn_aus link=1229240946/0#13 date=1229582361
Nice!! So much potential. And so little worry about damaging those floor coverings. :P
Seriously, it looks pretty good.
Those floor covering wont be there long!
Dudley in the basement? Heaven forbid!
And yes, thats a side door leading to the pathway and toilet.
Dont know about the fireplace...might be a bit too cosy for some customers. ;)
Nice job Den, happy to see that your business continues to grow and evolve.
I wonder if the move means I can get a great burger and a great coffee all within a short walk of each other ...
Thats right Aaron!
Just be careful crossing the road!
Den, lets think a bit laterally here mate ...Originally Posted by cuppacoffee link=1229240946/0#17 date=1229598813
Make the fireplace a drawcard to customers - a few simple conversions and its a wood fired pizza oven! (subject, of course, to Sutherland Council approval :P)
In-house roasted beans would register if I were driving past ... but the addition of hand-made traditional pizzas made to order in front of me would make me screech, U-turn, run red lights, and create major traffic pile-ups, to get there.
Crazy thought? :D
Yep - forget it!!!Originally Posted by GrindOnDemand link=1229240946/20#20 date=1229642268
What, you mean coffee-flavoured pizza Tony? *;DOriginally Posted by GrindOnDemand link=1229240946/20#20 date=1229642268
I like the idea of oven roasted pizza but I dont think Den would want his business relegated to the status of pizza joint. I know roughly where the new place is and it is within staggering distance of a large pub IIRC. Perhaps not the sort of clientele Den might want to encourage, but not for me to say, of course *:)
Im still trying to work out whom Den would prefer not *to get too comfy in front of a fireplace???
Yeah, yeah, crazy thought - but any other brilliant ideas out there to utilise the fireplace apart from its original purpose? :-?
Maybe Dens got something in mind ...
I already suggested it could be used as a flue for Dudley (if the chimney is open) or...
...another crazy thought - the first fireplace roaster operating something like a BBQ roaster. You could add a new dimension by selecting various wood to impart an additional Aussie bushfire aroma.
Dont worry Den - this isnt a serious suggestion. But you never know - the idea may not be that ridiculous. Whats coffee roasted over a fire like (as is done, no doubt, in parts of Northern Africa)?
The fireplace is boarded-up, probably because the chimney stack hasnt been cleaned in decades, and honestly, the mantle is pretty crappy.
A couple of people suggested using it to flue Dudley, but again, I think thats more trouble than its worth.
If it were re-commissioned as an open fire Id be worried someone would burn themselves. *And if I were to instal something safer, people might not want to leave their seats and go home. *I dont intend to set up a gentlemans or ladies club! ;D
Oh, and I think the only pub nearby is a couple of km away Steve - would be a bit of a stagger!
Ohh, cmon Den - wheres your entreprenuarial spirit fella?
Its an asset ... so use it! Dont relegate it to hide behind a piece of chamfer-board just yet.
From your pic, move that extinguisher near it to circumvent woosy customer concerns about safety, cordon off a 2 metre circumfrence, and make the bloody thing into a pizza/bread oven.
Crazy thought? :D
Just three or four minutes walk from the shop and youll be able to enjoy this...
Fantastic, Den.Originally Posted by cuppacoffee link=1229240946/20#27 date=1229759102
Which ones yours? ;)
I used to have an Endeavour which was very appropriate for those waters, but alas, I have it no longer. :(
Maybe one day I might be able to get a hobie cat - theyre a heap of fun if you keep the mast out of the water. :-[ ;D
Being so close to the water Dennis, will you be able to get much work done?
great to hear its all coming together. Looks like 09 will be the start of something big.
Now that the lease has been signed and Ill be picking up the keys on Monday 29th December, I can reveal the location (if you hadnt already guessed) and a pic of the shopfront...
55 Princes Highway Sylvania
Congratulations, Dennis - it looks great, or it will after youve worked your magic on it. :)
love it! digging the blue tiles outside and the upper section of the window. *edit* I remember this shop now! The ship chandler/marine exchange or something.
Cant wait to see what you do with it Dennis, congrats!
Congradulations! Dennis, as if you werent busy enough.
Im sure that the set up will be frantic but enjoyable over January. Good luck with it and I hope to make this grand re - reopening
Good pick up Den. I love the Art Deco facade. Very stylish and somewhat appropriate for a coffee business.
A great location. Close to home for you too. I first thought it was at the top of the hill near Southgate Bowling ctr/Sylvania pub.
But in response to Tonys suggestion, across the road is Pauls Famous Hamburgers. There have been stories about people stepping off a plane and insisting the taxi driver take them straight to Pauls.
I hope there will, over time be Dennis Wells Famous Cuppacoffee
Give us a hoy if you need any help with the move.
PS Id love to take advantage of this deal: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1203772677/10#10
gee Dennis what are you doing to me, i only just worked out how to get to your current address and now youre moving :)
certainly has a little more character than the shed, might have to plan a trip down for a burger and coffee when you move by the sounds of it :P
Well, I picked up the keys for the shop yesterday and have lifted the dirty old carpet tiles to find part of the timber floor covered in old linoleum tiles, glued down with tar paper. *These were obviously glued down to last an eternity!
Were going to sand and varnish the hardwood timber floor but first have to remove the tar paper and residue from about 30% of the flooring and will tackle this tonight.
Hopefully, Ill have found a new and effective use for a heatgun! ;D
Just a little update...
Weve made good one of the walls that was a bit dodgy and repainted all the walls. Through Michaels perserverence and 4 litres of turps the floor has been cleaned up and once some nails are banged down it will be ready to sand and polish later this week.
I couldnt resist doing something with the fireplace, so stripped and sanded, added a few features, and varnished. Cleaned the tiles as best I could and we now have a nice feature. There was a fire in the building over 30 years ago and the chimney was removed and sealed, so at this point it wont be operative.
Still lots to do, though already looking 100 times better than it was a week ago and will post some pics later.
The roastery will be closed for a couple of days while we sand and polish the floors.
In the meanitme, here are some pics of progress so far...
Looking great Den.
The fireplace came up well. Just enough space for Tonys pizza oven ;)
...or a telly playing a fire video.
Looking great Dennis, love the coffee paint colours too.
Its looking fabulous, Dennis, I love the coffee colours. Maybe you could put a Genecafe in the fireplace?
Advertising space for "hot" deals I reckon!
Wood fired coffee beans :-)
Ten hours of sanding a very old hardwood floor was harder than I thought it was going to be....I had a laugh.
One final coat of floor sealer in the morning and then back at the roastery for usual trading hours.
Hope to have a very limited and very special coffee for the opening. ;)
It may not seem like much, but the addition of the fridge (not photo-shopped) is making it all seem real.
Not long to go now!
Things have been quiet in the Shire so you must be busy.Originally Posted by 2F393C3C2D2F232A2A29294C0 link=1229240946/48#48 date=1232007322
Floor looks it came up great even from the small patch showing in the photo. Im a bit worried about the customer base you are trying to attract when you need signs like that on the fridge
PS Youll need to fix up your sig too - missing the opening bracket on the email tag << D oh you already saw it[/edit]
