Silvia Single Shot 1, Me 0

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I admit defeat. I have up dosed, varied pull temp/grind/beans, but cannot achieve decent shot from the Silvia single shot basket. I think the volume of the basket is too small. If I use the single shot basket from my La Cimbali in the Silvia (bit loose in the PF holder though) I have better results, and the two baskets are very similar in design, apart from the La Cimbali holding more coffee. So its back to the double shot basket - with huge improvement in all "in cup" results. The product from the Silvia single & double baskets is frustratingly different!

I tried with the Rancilio baskets for a while.
Then I bought the Pullman tamper and Synnesso basket on a "what the hell" whim.

Never looked back. the improvement in the shot was amazing.
Getting a tamper that exactly fits the basket also helps a great deal.

Yes agreed. The Silvia baskets are about as useless as *insert chosen analogy here*.

Best thing you can do is bin them and get some real, and deeper baskets....

Synesso baskets seem like a good option, but I still struggle to get a decent shot out of a single anyway. Double synesso seems to be the best option (and for an extra 7 grams of coffee, I dont have to throw many away!)

Re: Silvia Single Shot 1, Me 0

Reading through several posts one thing stands out.
Single baskets generally dont give a good shot.

I havent really played around with a single. The only single basket I own is the Silvia one. No one yet has complained about getting a double shot in a latte that I give them so I havent bothered.

People that are getting good shots off a single are also saying that you have to change the grinder setting. Another annoyance.

Im a regular single user - not silvia, S20, but very similar group I think. i have rancilio 6 and 7gm. The 6 gram is small, I use the 7 gram. I think it is worth continuing using, as I get really good shots with it. For me, the big factor (with single or double) is getting the dose just right, which means getting as much in as you can.

You can get good results from single baskets but due to their design theyre generally more difficult to work with than double baskets. The reasons are explained at http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1169781510. You might like to check the photo in post #33 in that thread too!

You cant quite tar all single baskets with the same brush, though; as that thread shows there are some fairly significant differences in design of single baskets, some of which are less awful than others! The capacity varies a lot too, and the Silvia ones tend to be on the smaller side. The Synesso ones are more gentle in shape and larger than the Silvia ones which have a fairly pronounced inward step about half way down (like the La Marzocco singles), as shown below, so you can tend to get better results with the Synesso baskets than the Silvias:

Silvia single (L), Synesso single (R)

My smaller is like the one on the left, my larger like on the right. The larger one is where I get good results.

Yes, the Synesso single looks more like the Cimbali single, and does produce a better single shot out of my Silvia. Thankfully my M27 is very close to being fully commissioned so this will alleviate some of my frustration.

I picked up a single from Coffee Parts and my single shots have improved dramatically.

I have a La Marzocco single shot basket and with my e-61 Grimac I can pull the best 1/2 OZ single shot you can ask for...
even better than the 2oz shots with the 21gr LM triple basket.
    (quantity vs quality I guess)

tried the Roncillo basket but IMO they are as bad as they get.., again, In My Opinion.

the "secret" to tie the score with your Silvia maybe just a different basket..;)

    good luck,

Agree with all of the above. I had the same issue and got the synesso one. It is better but not but best shot. The pour is a little on the fast side and i thought that this was due to chanelling? thoughts? It was suggested earlier that you should adjust the grind to suit the basket. I thought that the gind should be the same for a single or double.

I am having issues with my Rancilio single shot as well. Where can I get a Synesso basket from?

Re: Silvia Single Shot 1, Me 0

To add another layer of complexity to this... not all Silvia baskets are created equal! Believe it or not, some of the older ones were even smaller than the ones that are probably being referred to! See http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1199919122/7#7

The only comfort is that since both Silvia baskets are on the small side, the only question is HOW bad the baskets are! ;D

Might look into the Synesso basket recommend.

My other issues is that my pours seem to be coming out rather quick. I cant seem to get the 30ml in 25-30sec mark. My shot seems to pour in like 10sec. Any tips or suggestions??

I set my grinder to the smallest setting possible. I tamp the shot down quite firm and use fresh beans from the local roaster. ???
I only have a cheap Delongi burr grinder and am thinking this may the problem as it might not grind the beans fine enough. But I am not sure....

ITS ALL IN THE GRIND, quote Black Hawk Down actor
Not 100% true but it is a major part of brewing great coffee using any method, epresso, drip, plunge, syphon, stove top etc.
If you are ever able to look at ground coffee from different blades under a microscope, it will all make sense.
start by imaging cutting a bean in half and brewing it. Hummm.
cut those parts in half again and brew.
keep going and going and note the difference.
    hope this makes sense.
    cheers

ITs all in the blades AND MOTOR
Consider one or two blades chopping slowly at your beans.
    generating heat and chopping unevenly
Vs several blades slicing evenly and quickly
Total saturation of bean is greater and less heat generated minimising pre mature loss of bean character

If it is any thing less than a KG100 your in trouble... And even then the KG100 after modifications to allow it to grind slightly finer will not do a Silvia justest..

To get the best from your machine you need to invest in a Real grinder and any thing less than $300 New is going to be marginal as to suitability... That is not to say that there some grinders that would do the JOB, but you will be restricting yourself...

Tamp quite firm ? How firm 10 / 20 30 kg... Do a tamp on the bathroom scales and see what you get...

Beans from local Roaster... How OLD ?

When were they ROASTED... Is it marked ?

If a CS roaster, then you should be fine...

Some very good roaster around and then there are some plases that suggest they roast, but just on sell the beans and they may not be as good as you expect.
