Home Roasted Coffee Around The World

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Just about to enjoy a lovely Rwandan french press by Lake Taupo NZ on a recent trip to meet my new niece.
Took my own coffee for the week, sadly had to all be ground before i left. Still better than most of the cafe coffee i had whilst traveling the north island, despite not being freshly ground, and being ground a little too finely(im not used to using a press).
Oh yeah, Mum and Dad swimming in the background too. i went in, for about 1minute. Cold!

I was under the impression NZ had fairly good coffee. I read somewhere that theres more speciality roasters in NZ per capita than Australia...

Sure have plenty of roasters but the speciality part soon becomes commercial and thats where the problem starts. Many great beginnings end up on supermarket shelves, in NZ anyway. :-/

I can think of a few examples in Australia too.

Im sure theres great coffee to be had in NZ. Sadly i wasnt lucky enough to find any of it. In one cafe, (granted its specialty was pies, not coffee, but they had a nice well used looking three group and grinder) i asked the nice lady for a short black, and alarm bells shouldve rung when she held up a little espresso cup and asked: "a short black is one of the ones in this cup isnt it?"
    No joke.
I usually have a rule where i ask for a ristretto. If they dont know what a ristretto is, i find another cafe. This time though, i made the mistake of getting the coffee without the little test, and it was terrible.
    Good pie though.

I remember when I was young, doing the hour each way trip to Mungindi because it was the nearest place that sold Tamworth Pies. Would still nearly do the same thing today, a GOOD pie is like a good coffee.........worth any effort. 8-)

Going to HK in a few weeks time, just planning the logistics of fresh coffee and brewing method, probably pre-ground and plunger. Found cafe opposite hotel that sounds like it may have a decent espresso. :-/

a colleague of mine is from HK, or a "Hongy" as she calls herself (which i love, but think perhaps would be a little rude if i said it), and she told me that a "western style" coffee in HK can cost around AU$6 in the tourist area. and that was over a year ago, so i imagine with the exchange rate now it might be even worse. she suggested i should open a cafe there to make my millions, because she really likes the "beautiful like professional one" coffees i make for her.
    one day perhaps.
