    CoffeeSnobs Articles Idea

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I had an idea recently about CoffeeSnobs, and how I like the idea of a Forum - becuase it encourages discussion etc.

However - there are several things that are very frustrating about a forum - mainly, if you know there is something about the place that you once read - you have to search for it....

So - I thought about the idea of setting up a CoffeeSnobs Wiki, so that people can post articles that tend to evolve out of forum threads?

I was thinking that the articles section of the site would contain information sorted by the same categories that the Forum does...
ie.. There could be a "General /\/ General Coffee Related" category, as well as a "Brewing Equipment /\/ Brewing Equipment - Midrange ($500-$1500)" category. This way people could look for articles for their machines etc.

In particular I thought this would be of use for - Specific machine articles. Specific machine mod articles.

A couple of things made me think of this idea - Gronking your coffee machine, and, Building a Coretto. I know there are the "Important Thread" parts - but I think it could be possible to refine things into articles.

Then an article may be a combination of the first post in a thread, but edited by the person to include some of the tips/mods others have included in the discussion. They could also include a link to the forum topic for comment - and continued discussion.

    Just an idea anyhow.

I think its a good idea, particularly for mods/tips to sort them into one easy to find place, but would take some time and effort to get together.

A Wiki has been done before on Andys Green Bean Bay notes for bean flavour profiles

However hackers and spammers have killed it a few times

We had a vigorous discussion about a similar proposal (forum based) started by Flynn_aus but more for beginers and links provided to a particular subject for more information

The post was Coffee Snobs Home Truths

What, Flynn-auss *Home Truths or the old wiki being hacker-friendly? :-/

CS, being a forum, lends itself well to the posting format as a means of sharing info and Im not sure a wiki is required. If someone updates a wiki, others may object or try to change the wiki to suit their own view rather than posting their suggestion for debate.

    Well thats a shame *:(

I get frustrated with people who do not read or research and then post asking CSs to tell them how long their piece of string is.. :-? :( :(

KK has already stated one reason, the other is that people that do not know; do not know, it is a catch 22. Thus no matter what you / we / Andy does... They do not know and will bypass almost every bit of help other systems may provide...

    Typical.. First post is..

What coffee machine should I buy ???
    OR
I can not get good coffee what is wrong with my machine????

CS people do their best.... Then the same question will be asked in the next post by another new user.. :( :(

    Coffee Snobs Home Truths http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1224157582/42#42

Is a great start but who knows it is there ? Make it a sticky... But first time users or nubes will not read..

They just want a quick fix and post away... :( Even when you do provide info, many never return (There OK or NOT) and thus your never sure that what you advised was of assistance....

I did up a check list / form for teh Em6910 with a reply that sent there responses back.. But where does one host it (A downloads section) and then you still have to reply and tell people where it is.. :-[

The search engine is Good (not great but good) and if you know how to use Google it will search CS for you, as well... 8-) 8-) 8-)

Problem is most people are not IT aware (Think they are) and thus blame the tools... Not unlike blaming their equipment when THEY can not make a coffee... :(

    End of RANT...

Had enough IT issues lately to want to support any process that requires people to sit an Exam and get a licence B4 being allowed to buy a PC.. 8-)

I meant the hacking/spamming of the wiki. Granted this is a common problem with the very idea of what a wiki is, I would still have thought maybe the general type of d*ckhead who spams up a place might not bother ruining what is after all just a very specific interest groups information hub.

But I guess the jerks come in every flavour of the rainbow.

I had a laugh AM. Are you sure youre managing that anger? ;D

We have a shelf in the pantry that has a gazillion jars of spices on it. Nothing but spices. There arent that many spices in the whole world. Every time a recipe requires a spice, my lovely Sue buys a new, fresh jar that is the same as the other 10 jars of the same spice we have in the pantry.

Perhaps its just human nature and easier to ask than to research?

Anyone know where I can get some spice that I might not already have? :D

I think thats the crutch...err crux of the problem AM. The first post they get from Andy is "Dont be shy, say something" (or similar) so the first *thing theyll post is the question that caused them to discover CS in the first place.

My suggestion was to have the Home Truths created as a PDF which Andy could attach to the Welcome message but they were not complete and my requests for contributions was not responded to.

Yea or even have them answer some questions as to Machine / beans etc etc so that it would force them to populate or think first..

But if they are like me ;D I just put in any thing, do not read and then use any other trick to allow me to get access to a forum..

However I do try to research and provide or the RELEVANT details before posting away...

I am not Angry... Just pissed... No one ever want to see me Angry... They only ever get to see it ONCE :-*

Even more reason... Spammers are after hits, Hackers after addresses and data etc.. That then allows them to take the next step... Thus any system that is not locked down is FAIR game... > 90% of all network trafic is SPAM :( :( :( :(

Interesting and humorous [s]rants[/s] comments... ;D

I guess all we can ever hope to do, is to help newbies find the information for themselves via one or both of the methods mentioned by AM. Maybe even to the extent of doing the first search for them just to demonstrate how easy it is.

If after this, they still cant find the answers theyre seeking, then often someone has already covered the topic in great detail on another website, such as Home Barista or Randys "Espresso! My Espresso!" just to name a couple of the better ones around. Anyway, you get the drift.... If after all of this, they still cant locate the answers theyre looking for, then we always do our best. One of the great things about the CoffeeSnobs Community I believe.

Most of us have been in a newbies shoes at one stage or another so we know what it feels like. Im really not into hand-holding as such but going that extra step to help someone seems to be something that most CSers dont mind doing and will keep on doing. Dont think there is anything to prevent us from keeping that tradition going.... Unless something better DOES come along ;)

Im with you AM, great post, its just how i feel today after a staff member quit on me this week.
People are too lazy to search, they want everything yesterday and think everything is so simple "whats the problem they say"

Just like with IT they think its all like a toaster from Hardly Norman.

But on the otherhand as Mal rightly says, people need to be encouraged and nurtured into the forum and it amazes me how many times i read a post where my answer would "use the search function" but users like Mal, TG and others too many to mention caugh up a wonderfull reply that includes a polite comment about using the search function as well next time.

Perhaps i just dont have the patience anymore :-/ but i am glad of those of you who do.

    But back on topic.
Creating yet another function to do what is essentially already here just doesnt make sense, plus its too time consuming

    My second crack

I am glad some of what I said rang a bell with some one ::)

You will notice that many CS members will give a quick response and often then provide a link.. My self included... But at times, I may grit my teeth and up my dose of Zoloft...

However I do tend to sleep better, knowing I may have assisted / helped some poor bugger... Strange as it may seem, some even hang around and become productive members of CS...

So I guess that is what it is really all about...

Night Night... Double dose of Z coming up this evening :-[

Thanks AM, Ive been looking for something like that. Id like to think Im not newb enough to need a thread like that (been working as a barista for a few years with Gloria Jeans) but extra information is always handy.

Youre correct that many new people may want the quick fix, but some of us dont want to hold up a sign saying "Hi! I want to be spoon fed everything!"

When I signed up to the CS forum, the welcoming PM I received was a nice touch, perhaps Andy Freeman could add a link to the Home Truths in that?

    Welcome, *A Bravington

Glad to see that your doing some reading and research.. *It does make things easer for ALL.

In addition to a link in any welcome message.... *My personal request is that people should be directed to include the Location in their Profile *;)

Quite often a CS member may be around the corner and many of us are only too willing to provide assistance..

I trust you enjoy your time here, and that regardless of background / experience and passions your journey down teh coffee road is enhanced by being part of a very diverse but active group..

    Once again... Welcome.

PS... Many of us get a bit tough on GJ so we could all learn something here :o ::)

all joking asside - I still think there are a lot of people here who write a lot of stuff.

I think that there should be some better way to get access to some of that stuff. (note - SOME of it)

Even in the thread about Home Truths - Luca started into more detail....

Think I may have a word with Andy - see what he reacons.

I think Andy will say "what a great idea, how about you run with it?"

Personally, I think its also a great idea, but theres a lot of work involved in it being maintained. I think it would work best as a one or two person job, collating informative posts into a blog or wiki.

Im sure no one here would mind their posts being re-printed elsewhere on the net as long as credit was given. Why not start a blog with informative articles in it, drawing from the wealth of info found here?

I think Andy has enough on his plate to not add this, particularly when this is a community with plenty of able people in it. Just check first regarding re-printing of CS content.

Im also pretty sure thats what hell say; he said the same to me on the Home Truths thing, but dont count on a wiki.

As per ACogs point of the need to maintain, I tried to keep mine fairly generic with links to more in-depth threads and topics on CS.

At Andys discretion it would be neater to have a new section, as already suggested by someone, and give Admin rights to that section only, for the one or two people maintaining it.

    TG,

Good idea. I was just thinking something along the lines of the Home Barista "Best of Forums" page. Where there are several forum topic links with short descriptions for each one.

    http://www.home-barista.com/faqs-and-favorites-digest.html

Would be a solid start, and not tooooo much work compared to a Wiki etc.

    Agree/Disagree??

AndyCJ, sounds like a great idea the only thing if it is for newbies then restricting the number of posts in this section is critical. If you have too many then people will have information overload.

What you need is a group of people to decide on which ones start off in this section and then CSs can nominate posts to be added/deleted to this group who have the ultimate say. I am willing to be part of that group to get the ball rolling (if this is what the CS community wants?)
