    Green Bean Storage

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All,

I have noticed of late a few articles about storage of green beans and there seems to have been a rethink on how long green beans can be stored...?

I have a veritable stash with some of my best beans being over 18 months old - this is because I am too miserly and want to only roast them when I am more of an expert - has the thinking changed now?

    Regards,

ps sorry about the win on Saturday ;)

    Re: Green Bean Storage

A few say a year, a few say 18 months.. Some say 6 months.. Depends who you ask really.

Id go for 12 months - a few retailers and wholesale contacts say this is the best before as opposed to a use by date..

So, Ill be going for 12 months, in calico/hessian sacks in a ventable, protected plastic roller container/s so the bugs dont get them ;)

My understanding from other posts on this site and the contract roaster i deal with is that green beans will last 3 years.

Mal, IMHO there is no magic number or use by date for greens. The 3 year rule is just a generalisation.

Presuming they are kept in an ideal environment, they will still change with age as soon as you start storing them. Some will deteriorate rapidly, while others may improve with ageing.

Your contract roaster should know that. ;)

    Cheers

    Thanks for the clarification Dennis.
I will ask him when i see him next, hey may have been talking about a specific bean and i misinterpreted him as i was hunting out some Mexican, ethiopian yirg and australian green beans for from under a pile of others at the time.

A stash he was trying to get rid of as there were not enough left to go through his roaster.

The australian BTW is very nice, makes a wonderfull espresso.

On orders from the missus who has been struggling to close bedroom cupboard doors, I acquired one of these recently from Ikea - $139. The product name is Expedit for anyone whos interested.

I have it on its side. You can also buy cupboard or draw inserts *($35 and $55 resp.) that fit into the square compartments.

This is right next to my bed so everynight Im inhaling the heady aroma of green coffee.

Not as bad as some Jon and others might argue that I have it good ;) and, contrary to any rumours, I dont kiss each bag goodnight ;D

But the truth is that is about the only place that I have room for it in my rather cluttered household. Having it on its side means I can put other things on top such as books, clock/radio etc

    Behmor Brazen - $249 - Free Freight
I spend a lot of time with the local roaster in Ballina from Nirvana coffee and Lattetude and he has been sitting on a bag of a "very special" Kenyan from a single farm that he loves soo much its now 3 years old.

He tells me that it will still be just as good in another 3 years if kept correctly and should only loose maybe 2% of overall taste from its original state.

Seeing as though he has been roasting for over 30 years ill take his word for it :)
